MEDAL OF HONOR: Navy SEAL Hostage Rescue and Hand-to-Hand Combat with Taliban | Edward Byers

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us capture more incredible stories: americanveteranscenter.org/don...
Inspired by films and literature during his youth, Edward C. Byers Jr. aspired to become an elite soldier in the United States military. After a deployment with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit in 1999, Byers was accepted to attend Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training. He graduated with BUD/S Class 242 and fulfilled his dream of becoming a Navy SEAL.
On December 8, 2012, Byers was part of a hostage rescue mission involving an American Physician being held captive by the Taliban. After a difficult hike to the target, Byers' SEAL team reached the compound where they believed Dr. Dilip Joseph was being held.
Following closely behind Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas Checque, Byers entered the compound, shooting dead an armed Taliban fighter and engaging others in fierce hand-to-hand combat. During the firefight Byers would use his body to shield the Dr. Joseph from enemy fire.
After the successful rescue of Dr. Joseph, Byers noticed Nicolas Checque had been wounded during the firefight and attempted to resuscitate him, but Checque would eventually succumb to his wounds. Nicolas Checque was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions.
For his actions Edward Byers was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 29, 2016.

We had an ex Navy Seal in my hiking club that I got to know. He knew I was ex Navy too, but a radarman. One time I encountered him going up a very steep hill near Auburn CA we call training hill. I was walking and he was jogging. He invited me to jog up the hill with him and I did for about 100 yards but I couldn’t keep up with him so I told him to continue jogging and I would walk the rest of the way up and meet him at the top. I’ll never forget what he said which was no, I’ll walk up with you, we never leave a man behind. I said you were a Seal and I was a radarman, that doesn’t count, you guys did pushups and we just pushed buttons. He said yes it does, we are both ex Navy, we were on the same team and we walked the rest of the way up the hill together like brothers. This was a really tuff guy built like a bulldog but yet he had a fierce and humble sense of supporting a team member even if he was just a skinny ex navy radarman.

One of the good things about being an American, is knowing that if you ever get captured like that, whether they are able to pull it off or not, there are men like this man, who are planning and trying to figure out how to come get you, and will pull out all of the stops to do so. I think just knowing that would help me get through something like that.

What an immensely eloquent and modest warrior this interviewee is! That these highly trained and experienced men were prepared to enter the enemy camp in order to rescue an American Doctor being held captive, in the full knowledge that they may be killed, wounded or captured is utterly remarkable! They had a pretty good idea that they'd be up against experienced, heavily armed terrorists, but still they volunteered! Whilst their rescue was a success, they lost a brother warrior in combat, and that must hurt.

Chief Byers' narrative and the way he tells this mission is riveting and awesome. The men of DEVGRU are amazing. I'm from Coronado and had the privilege of knowing and befriending a SEAL who eventually went on to be a plank owner on SEAL team 6. This was around 1980/81 time frame. I found out later that he was also a member of Gold squadron when he was there. As it turned out, I later became an AFSOC gunship pilot and actually ran into my friend on one of my first combat missions. Although he is no longer with us, he was a great guy and I really miss him. Chief Byers is exactly the type of guy you'd see in SEAL teams and even the guys at Ft. Bragg. Friendly to a fault, intelligent, well spoken, and obviously in tremendous physical shape with endurance that is hard to imagine. RIP Nick. His quick thinking, and faster actions most certainly saved that doctor’s life. Feel free to look up that valley. It’s called the “valley of death.” And this was the first and ONLY successful military operation in that valley in all of recorded history. Dating back to the Persian Empire and staying that way until the Soviet Union was destroyed and avoided that valley after dozens of failed attempts. The biggest loss of special forces happened in that valley. This was the FIRST and ONLY successful mission ever carried out in history in that valley. That is why this mission is so amazing and the most decorated of all time.

I've never watched one of these before. It played right after something else but I'm glad I got to see it. It brought tears to my eyes and I felt immensely proud of Navy Seal Byers. He's right, the news these days are reluctant to give honor where honor is due to our soldiers and Americans don't have a full understanding of the sacrifices our brave soldiers have made for us, for our freedoms, our nation. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mr. Byers.

The guy was given a PENTAGRAM as a reward for killing people in a different country. The “Taliban” exists exclusively because of NATO countries. Once again, government creates a problem ON PURPOSE, and stupid people sign up to kill for the government. Tell me, why we should be celebrating this guy? You’d think a Vietnam vet would be speaking out against the government at every avenue; considering Vietnam was another war literally based of provable lies. The Gulf of Tonkin didn’t happen, yet a war and millions of lives were ruined because of it! No it’s just easier to soapbox and call everyone a hero. I guess that agent orange rotted what little brain you still had 🤨
