How does your genetic inheritance, culture and history influence your health? Biological anthropologist Lara Durgavich discusses the field of evolutionary medicine as a gateway to understanding the quirks of human biology -- including why a genetic mutation can sometimes have beneficial effects -- and emphasizes how unraveling your own evolutionary past could glean insights into your current and future health.

    I remember reading a long time ago that the best way to extend the length of the human lifespan was to delay reproduction until in your 40s. Yes, there would be more problems for a while, but over time genetics and evolution would weed out the weaknesses and select for the strengths if we let it happen. The problem is the morality of letting it happen.

  • @salemsaberhagan

    @salemsaberhagan

    Жыл бұрын

    More than morality, it's the economics of it that's more problematic. For men, it's simpler. But for women, there are way too many factors pushing for earlier pregnancies which will have to be controlled. Not everyone has the resources to be able to do that. Some people whose natural response to a lack of resources will enable such delayed reproduction might simply end up too weak & sickly (in more ways than one) to survive long enough to raise a child. Bets which may have such high payoffs carry equally high risks.

    @@salemsaberhagan "Not everyone has the resources to be able to do that. Some people whose natural response to a lack of resources will enable such delayed reproduction might simply end up too weak & sickly (in more ways than one) to survive long enough to raise a child." This is part of the "morality" of the situation of which I am referring to. Putting children in a situation where care giving is not viable is a moral issue in my opinion. As you refer to, there are many causes, from financial, to age, to disease.

  • @salemsaberhagan

    @salemsaberhagan

    Жыл бұрын

    @@digiryde based on my personal experience, denying care or nutrition is not the only way this can be achieved even though that will most definitely cause the developmental delay desired. Essentially what you want is to delay or postpone female puberty so that there are still optimally viable egg cells or follicles at 40, & the woman in question will also be healthy & fit enough to carry the child to term. This is mainly because at that age, she will have emotionally & intellectually developed enough to be able to choose a man who counterbalances her specific weaknesses & strengths so the child gets the best of both. Puberty blockers are a thing, freezing eggs is a thing, regular exercise & other healthcare are important things. These things can improve viability of later pregnancies but they're obviously expensive. Just last week I saw a 40 year old on Instagram who looks like she's in her early 20s talking about how much those things help while completely glossing over her considerably strong financial position which allowed her to invest in that level of self care. Multiple failed pregnancies or miscarriages can also extend the female reproductive lifespan. I have older relatives who have had healthy children in their 50s, after already having 4-5 kids & a couple miscarriages under their belts. The body's natural deepfreeze mechanisms for eggs during pregnancy & lactation are very efficient. There can be attempts to piggyback on those systems but the science isn't there yet. The other option is that you can attempt to speed up the girl's cognitive development to match the requirements of her physical development. That means education & other support to develop the required important internal insight. That is also a lot of investment of a different sort. Maturity doesn't come from suffering alone, no matter how common people who don't seem to learn unless they get burnt seem to be. The world would be too horrible a place to live in if that wasn't true.

    I figured out that living your life like our hunter gatherer ancestors in certain ways was a good idea all on my own. I'm certain that it is not a coincidence that our ancestors, as well as animals in nature, were and are perfectly healthy without listening to doctors, the government, some nutritionist or a multi billion dollar corporation telling them what to eat and how to be healthy, yet these days, practically 100 percent of people look to science and their doctor to tell them how to be healthy instead of looking at health from an evolutionary perspective. What have we done to ourselves following this wisdom? Cancer, heart disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome, vitamin D deficiency, poor nutrition, auto immune diseases, and just a bunch of diet and lifestyle related diseases are murdering us and making our health terrible. Coincidence?
