    It's so weird that we're trying to use AI for things that it kinda doesn't make sense for. Like, you'd hope they made robots do menial work so humans could have time to make music and art and stuff. Instead they make robots do terrible music and terrible art and we're still stuck with looking at boring excel sheets. :(

    It's still used in programming and development work in order to try and handle more menial tasks involved in those occupations, such as organising elements of code (not writing, they suck at writing), all without being trained on stolen works, like it was kinda intended...

  • @thahacksaw

    @thahacksaw

    The menial work, oddly enough, is easier than writing a good song. Maybe not physically easier. But your average person will be competent at performing menial work with little to no training. Songwriting, like most forms of art, is unbelievably difficult to do well. And it's nearly impossible to train someone to do it.

    The mistake 99% of artists are making with AI is that they think they're safe as long as AI can't make music entirely by itself. The point is that the music market is going to become increasingly saturated as the barrier to entry plummets. And it won't be a few years, it'll be next year. There are hundreds of startups building like mad with billions of dollars in funding behind them.

    A big part of the concern for the Hollywood writers was that re-write pays a lot worse than original content, so studios could go to AI to get a "script" then pay a much lower rate to humans to make it functional. I suppose the same thing could be done in music ... get AI to write something trite and boring but give it to great studio musicians and give them room to build a song and the end result is maybe a much better song but no writing/composing residuals for the studio aces who really wrote the song.

    The lack of structure and planning of the autoregressive models is even more obvious in generated music. The thing is LLM tools like ChatGPT use a lot of supporting and peripheral techniques to make the text generation much better and useful, but these techniques are still being explored in other modalities like audio and video generation. And you are right, they will get much better very soon, probably much less than 2 years. AI generated content perhaps will become a part of music production, but I still think there are a lot of people who truly love music and also love the stories, meanings behind music. I for one love classic rock much more than pop stuff, I appreciate the music context and sophistication. I'm genZ btw, and there are a lot of people out there like me.

    Hey, Rhett, I agree with you on the composition end of this, since I have been writing music since I was 16, and I'm 65 now. But allegorically, think about it. Consider AI talking about tearing it all down - like human society. But I could be donning a tin hat on that, but not entirely. Instrumentally, I am 100% with you. it sucks. If AI takes lessons from the Classical or 70s genres, AI could become a force to be reckoned with, but for now, no. I am totally down with the idea of legislation and limitations.

    The thing that worries me is thinking of the amount of traffic on music apps in the future with people uploading AI music. trying to get anywhere would be so hard, and when it gets to the point where people can just type in a song they want and get it without any time, work and effort from an artist. Screens and charts of just silicon art and plastic faces it’ll be hell. I feel like the music trend of the future will be making music that sounds the least robotic as possible with the least electronic aspects that the artist can because I think that’ll be the only way you can stand out when it gets to the point of AI sounding convincing enough to make money from

    This isn't a good end product but its something a songwriter could use as a starting point, then modify it and make it something decent. I can see how it could be used as a tool for productivity etc...but honestly it worries me that young people might start completely relying on this for their songwriting. What happens when a whole generation doesn't know how to write a song without AI?

    Meh. It's rudimentary. Only a beginner songwriter would bother to use this as a template. The chord progression is one of the most used chord progressions in western music. There's literally nothing special at all about that song, which is exactly what you should expect from AI considering how it works. Its output will ALWAYS be generic crap. Garbage in, garbage out.

    @@Trentstone121 "The chord progression is one of the most used chord progressions in western music". That sounds like an indictment of human generated music more than a critique of AI generated music. There's literally nothing special about 90% of music today. As far as how AI works, you are totally incorrect. New models learn the structure of music by training (learning) on millions of pieces of music. Not really a lot different in abstract than the way humans learn to play music. These deep learning models have only hit mainstream within the last year or so as the amount of compute power has exploded. However, progress is now extremely rapid and will easily outperform most of what we hear from the music industry today in short order.

If a thirteen year old that wants to make music already has access to this tool, even if just to use it as a starting point, then there’s a lower chance that they will ever go through a phase of discovering more interesting chord progressions by themselves, or find what they really want to say by writing their lyrics from scratch.

    That was my reaction. The visual part is a bit weird but I've heard a lot, lot worse pop songs. Pop songs are mostly written to a formula and that's perfect for AI. It won't be long before the entire Top 50 chart songs will be wholly or partly generated by AI, and I can't say I care. It will still leave a lot of scope for good indie music that won't sell much, which is the stuff I like.

    Rhett, do one of these videos every month with what is actually considered the state of the art for this kind of generated content (if it can be found). I am quite sure it will get a lot better very quickly. As for this, it is probably using terrible general midi for sounds, rather than a state of the art library. Imagine instead of this going through some AI online engine it was an assistant in GarageBand that could create and drag in loops from its library, take lyrics and create a sung melody. I imagine that is what is really coming next - there will be someone in the driver's seat. I already have plug-ins with random patch generation - I just need to say when to stop. In the end, I think there will be great stuff coming from generated art, and it will be made by talented artists - they just won't need music chops, just good ears and taste.

All it will take is a few genius programmers who are also genius musicians and sound engineers to tweak the code and we will start to see some truly amzing ai music. Criticizing chord progressions, instrument choices, tone and lyric arrangements is piddly nitpicking on things that are very easily tweaked.
