Spoiler alert : It won't. It went downhill starting Warlords of Draenor that had huge potential yet was a complete letdown, and it only started going more and more nonsensical after that with threats becoming more and more cosmic in scale from the fate of the planet to the fate of the galaxy to the fate of reality. It's quite ironic that Dragonflight managed to set limit to things yet was completely underwhelming in terms of villains' charisma. Sylvanas' & Garrosh's stories eventually turned to utter shit towards the end but at least no one can deny that they were incredibly charismatic when they were in a cinematic or just talking.

Best thing i've seen in a while is someone say that Thralls suffing from ED (Elemental Dysfunction)

Watching this made me realize that WoW and FFXIV advertise their main stories for their expansions very differently with how they present villains. For example, take this trailer for The War Within and all of the trailers / content we know about FFXIV's Dawntrail coming out in just 24 days. Blizzard likes to lead with their villain(s) for the expansion, whereas Square Enix tends to let the villains initially be a mystery to the player. Not saying one is better than the other, just that they are remarkably different. I think the only FFXIV expansion where the trailer kinda tells you who the villain of the expansion is would be Heavensward, and even then the villain is only vaguely hinted to be a dragon. In fact, that's not even the final boss of the MSQ, but the post-MSQ story before the buildup to Stormblood.

I'm not convinced Xalatath is the main villain though. She's literally called the Harbinger, she's the one responsible for bringing the main villain along. We probably don't even know conceptually who the main villain is as a character, and they will begin to be built up now. Xalatath we've known for a while now, so they're leading with her for hype.

@@natebroadus8474 It's not really a stretch for stuff WoW's done before. I see Xalatath being the World Soul Saga's Guldan. She'll be either the second or third final raid boss of War Within and then bring through or about some void badguy for Midnight. My bigger worry than Xalatath being the main villain is that they're not gonna set up the actual villain at all, and we get another Nzoth situation where the final boss just sortof comes out of left field and then dies.

She's cool, she's charismatic, she's interesting, she's powerful, she's hot and most importantly, so far, she's well written. I want more of all that.

im still hellbend on that some event still has to occur during TWW that the Planets Surface shatters like it does on the Logo transition, the focus on it on the first big cinematic was even bigger. I always thought okay perhaps the sword falls down or shatters and that causes dmg in some areas to split up but it seems like that didnt happen yet, so perhaps something else will lead to that in the coming patches after 11.0

"Khadgar AFKs at the beginning" so we can expect him to come back for the final cinematic of TWW expansion to save the day and take us into a bright new expansion in WORLD_SOUL_SAGA_EXPANSION_2.

It's somewhat weird how there's no mention of Iridikron in any of TWW so far. Not in any trailers, not in any zones, not any dungeons or even the first raid. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just weird how absent he is.

he isnt involved here.. he gave her the dark heart and let her go.. His literal long game is to allow her and the VOid to go rampant, forcing the Titans to return, which is his whole game.

I've been a Priest main since raiding in Molten Core. I thought the Xal'atath stuff was awesome and never expected it to go this far. However, I quit in Shadowlands at after Castle Nathria. I kept up with the story and I absolutely despised what they did with Sylvanas. She was a favorite of mine since Warcraft 3. With that perspective, The War Within looks promising story-wise to me, but I don't know if I can ever come back. My trust and faith with this franchise is in shambles. Which is sad because I grew up with it.

With how often Blizzard pulls the ol' bait and switch between the build-up to an expansion and what they actually deliver, I'm going to be waiting and watching War Within for several months to see if they actually deliver on a good story and good game play. But if they don't, oh well. Elden Ring DLC will keep me busy, as will Dawntrail. Plus, I still need to pick up Ghosts of Tsushima. I've got plenty of things to keep me busy for the rest of the year, at the very least.

@@Mechkami44 Shadowlands was absolutely terrible. Dragonflight is, as best, mediocre - it's about on par with Cataclysm, in my opinion. Too many dropped story lines, bungled resolutions, terrible delivery, very 'meh' dungeon content, a real lack of any PvP content, and only middling raids keeps it way down on the list for me. Which means that the people who came back to play it were like, "Eh, it's fine." And they played a couple months and then left. But after the back-to-back double stinkers of BfA and Sadlands, what's left of the hardcore WoW fan base think Dragonflight is just the best thing ever. Which, I mean I'm happy they like their game. But DF really isn't for everyone.

lol. I'm leveling through cata, i'm at Icecrown, and at the point just after she says. "hollow faith that can't sustain you." I happen to click on Tirion Fordring at Crusader Pinnacle, and he does his Voice Line of "Put your Faith in the Light, and All is possible." I was like You tell her Tirion. lol

Iridikron is a pretty badass villian too, of the new 1's

I noticed the facial animations and eye movements right away too. I really noticed it with Alleria and her moment of loneliness. Well done in that front.

I hope Xala'tath is the final boss of the Last Titan and is a thorn in our side in all 3 expansion and we build toward that encounter in the last Raid of the 3rd expansion similar to how Arthas encounter was built in Wrath but better since it has 3 expansions to build. She has such a unique origin was trapped in a Old God Dagger had to manipulate her way free. If done right she could be top WOW Villain.

This gives me big vanilla intro cinematic energy. Like, it wouldn't surprise me if they reveal that first voice in the cinematic over was her.

See, that last line, makes it sound like she plans to use US as a knaifu this time around. The question is, who will she be pointing us at? The Titans? Her former masters the Void Lords? Both? Either way, interesting seeing her presented as a story antagonist, instead of a direct enemy. Subtle but significant difference there.

It would be interesting to see WoW do an actual shades of grey storyline... if they actually know what that means. One of the things that made that Old Gods in the C'thulhu mythos so terrifying is that they don't give a crap about humans. They're ancient, massive, and inscrutable, and drawing their attention will blast a person's sanity from their sheer alienness. But in WoW, they're just like space lice shot out into space to infect planets. And they don't even work together to do that. So, it would be interesting to see Xal'atath using players as a way to either defeat her creators, or to free herself from them, and could include the players working against her at the start, only to have her realize that it would be better to work with them rather than try to manipulate them. But Blizzard doesn't (or can't/won't) do subtle storytelling in WoW, and I'm worried she's going to end up as just another mustache-twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain like every villain they've ever had. Illidan's nuance from Warcraft 3 got swept away with Burning Crusade, only to try to be patched up again for Legion. Most of Arthas' storytelling happened in Warcraft 3 and Frozen Throne, and his novel. Not in WoW. Deathwing was just a blunt instrument. The only interesting facet of Garrosh was the result of a mistake on the part of the quest designers for Stonetalon. N'Zoth got turned into a super chump. And Sylvanas and the Jailer... yeesh.

I thought Iridikron was already a pretty good villain. Someone who gets built up over a long period of time instead of getting slaughtered immediately in a raid

Nah, Blizzard doesn't do in-house testing. They let their players (and, of course, streamers) act as unpaid alpha and beta testers, and to generate hype for their game. Then they usually wind up changing a bunch of stuff between the beta and release after all that hype has conned people into buying preorders, swapping out fun and interesting gameplay mechanics for power grinds. They've done it with every expansion since Legion, pretty much.

Part of the problem with Blizzard and writing villains is they always lose at the end of the expansion and we move on. We know Midnight is void related so I am hoping Xal'atath will provide us with our first expansion loss

' Snarky messages about un earned rights, self important female villians, and convoluted setups to strip power(s) from players & NPCs as a contrived way to level stuff out, and in the end it's all bloody projection because she happen to have some übur artifact that was from times before old gods, etc etc and she as just taken the only thing she cares about endless rage because she was wronged. I hope I am wrong, but good god I believe it'll be an exhausting fucking proding at everyone about 'you've not really got what you think you got, and what you've earned and what you're proud of is nothing and will be taken away becauese I can, but I am also morally better than you because behind it all you're just rage I can just sieze from you regardless. Villian for sure.. but good I doubt it, and she'll be as deep as the whole insane banshiee bit with even less reason or attachment and a pension for proving a point using powers she never earned projecting all you are is fury because that's all she is.... and empty female body of fury and stolen powers.

Not gonna lie, this trailer seems like garbage to me. From someone who played Wow for 15 years but doesn't now.

But what about the Jailor? That animation tho. Holy shit.

I both hate and love, having to choose between FFXIV and WoW because of the current cost of living. Because the change of direction in WoW, is making that choice harder and harder, and that is a good thing imho.

A lot of assumptions based on a couple of lines. I mean I'm sure they're trying to make a good villain, but I also assume they tried with the Jailer too.

The Jailer wasnt built up in any meaningful way, meanwhile Knaifu aka Xal'atath has been in the game behind the scenes, creating mischief, biding her time and now with Iridikron, a new villain introduced in 10.0.7 she is making her move.

The problem with WoW is that you are heralded as a champion/savior and are buttered up every expansion but you play no role in the story. The story is about the factions leaders and other important npcs. This is why the story always feels seperated from the actual gameplay. So either make the player a footsoldier, not important person and reflect that in text and speech or make the story about the player. But making the player appear stronger than any npc and antagonist but ultimately not impact anything in the long run is just dumb. Makes you either not invested in your own gameplay or not invested in these npcs.

They have had years to copy FFXIV’s homework. Surely they can make a decent villain at this point. Right guys? right….?

Everytime I see this villain on screen. All I can see is Aaravos from the DragonPrince cartoon. / Litterally the same character. Playing with the minds and feelings of adversaries. Etc... Either they were inspired by Aaravos or just litterally lifted them directly for this character.

I don't know, I really liked Jaina's story arc in the beginning of BfA. Her coming to grips with her past traumas and mistakes. Reconnecting with her mother. Actually acting like a grown-ass 40-year-old woman instead of a bratty, emotional teenager. Of course, Blizzard threw all that character growth right out the window in Shadowlands.

@@Maria_Erias The "idea" of story arc was good , the execution not so much , it really felt rushed (like anything related lore in this game to be honest) Same happen with garrosh , there was a quest in Cata where he kill one of his commanders for bombing alliance civilians and what he does in pandaria? nuke a whole city... it's like they forget what they put in the game The only somewhat good story telling using blizzard character is done in books, but that really doesn't count...

And that questline in Stonetalon with Garrosh killing his commander because the dude attacked a civilian target was the result of a miscommunication on the part of the quest team - basically, the team who made that quest line did it without being told what they were supposed to do. So that honorable side of Garrosh - ostensibly the part of him that made him the most orcish - was a fluke. Which kind of puts things in perspective, doesn't it? WoW characters only have interesting growth or character arcs when someone screws up. Blizzard can accidentally itself into success, but always fails whenever they actually try.

It has become World of Foreverwarcraft. Give Azeroth a break! Let those humans, orcs, dwarves, elves, trolls and furries know peace at last! Blizzard should retire WoW, make something new to take over from it, and maybe a different kind of game set in Azeroth about the post-war period. How about a turn-based strategy game? I like those.

Prepare for 2 cliffhangers and 1 let down for this trilogy. Watch that Xal'atath turn out to be nothing but a tool but WAIT! she will be really good if you read... the books (allegedly)

I can't help thinking about all the dropped storylines in Dragonflight alone. The oathstones. The start of the story in the Azure Span that went nowhere. The Primalist Future. The burning of Loamm. The scuffed, nonsensical "friendship is magic" ending to the Amirdrassil story arc.

Why wasn't this the CGI trailer for the War Within? This sells the expansion so much more to none WoW players than the one we got at Blizzcon.

I dunno man. They took another one of there 'this character is around, and she's doing tHinGs' out of cold storage and she said you nothing, Ima own you. Blizzard writes for impact. They twist every event to land a single line of dialogue or twist without all of the construction needed to really sell it. So if they're gonna learn anything and show it we'll see that change in the actual expansion instead of in the marketing which is their strong suit. Remember. Their best marketing was for WoD. I do half expect this xpack to end with her dying then for some new voice to say the usual. "My puppet has served her purpose. Now, I, the mastermind behind your grocery list since (insert warcraft 1 release date) have come to bag Azeroth."

A good villain is one you often agree with and it makes you wonder if you're on the wrong side. She has that potential.

I still feel the problem that this will only work for people that played during all of legion as shadow priest as a main, the story of a videogame should be experienced from the player characters point of view, and unless they were shadow priest during legion, there is no real connection to xalathad.

@@TheMexRAGE Of course it doesn't compare, but we learned about as much about her during that "side quest" to unlock a raid as we did during legion. What we knew about her before that: 1. She was somehow involved with the old gods 2. she had been trapped in the dagger since before titans arrived 3. she has a sexy voice. Like I put it before, a lot of spice, very little substance.

I hate Alleria's new look... well, more specifically, i hate that haircut. I don't know why but Blizzard uses that haircut all the g'damn time in their games.

I wish them luck, but they burned me too hard in Shadowlands. Doubtful I'll ever return to WoW.

I must be really missing something here, because everyone seems to think this trailer is amazing, and that Xal'atath is coming off as charismatic and interesting. I don't see it, or hear it. The whole speech she gives off is essentially a nothing burger. We've pretty much heard every villain before her say the say things. Are people just super hype cause she's hot? This trailer does nothing, and shows nothing. I don't understand the hype. Now if she did something interesting, or diabolical in the trailer to show off her power. I could see the hype. But a bland speech, a tilted smirk, and her clutching a necklace. . . Really? Is that all it takes now. Blizzard has it easy if this is all it takes to drive interest to the new expansion.

This is what happens when interest in retail is so low. It's no secret that Classic has been keeping the lights on for WoW, even their newly-released sub numbers show that. But they've spent the last 3 expansions finding ways to make their players hate everything about the game that the few people still clinging religious to retail because they don't know that they can go and play other games - even other versions of WoW! - will jump at anything that doesn't immediately suck.

Make a good villain? They have to finish an expansion for that to happen so the answer is most likely no.

I just can't get past the formulaic voice acting. All of the voice acting in WoW has the same cadence etc. It's not good and is really bad. The dramatic pauses constantly even when nothing dramatic is happening? It's such bad direction. Are they trying to make a good villian? They are trying to make anything good - duh. But can WoW players actually wait until the game and story fleshes out to see if they actually "got there"? No, they can't. Even the Jailor seemed interesting which is why we all gave SL the chance.

Nothing close to original or fresh, just the same recycled material Blizzard has been selling for a decade. Boy that dodgy kebab on the corner tastes better...

@@unreasonablyagreeable1081 It's not about being old, Im playing dota and it still kicks ass cause it is a good game for example. Wow storyline trailers nowadays are just cringe. Go back and see TBC Sunwell intro or Wotlk e3 intro to look at what real quality is. What we have here is 10 year old mentality level villain.

WoW players standards are in the toilet. Even after being screwed over for 8 years they still think Blizzard can make a good villain. Sigh.
