The settlement stuff will open up very early in act 1, but it probably won't fully develop until maps since the gold costs will be balanced around endgame play. You will need to play through the campaign to really engage with the league - same as everyone does every league.

And that is why you dont write your characters like that. Make her side character and the slowly interact with her more and more. OR just go all in, give her scenes give her good character journey, scenes with her siblings, good moments, bad moments, but dont as Preach said try to have your cake and eat it!

Krille and Erenville parts were such huge dissappoinments. Krille should have played major part in the Dawntrail and we should have been presetn and be there for her for many more scenes. The scenes we got, mainly with her parents were a joke. There should have full on conversation, maybe even join us for a time and show us and Krille their world. Would care much more for those quests like restart a fountain or do a show, if it was for Krille to have a good final momemts with her partents. And then at the end, Krille should be crying entire time while trying to delete her parents and they should have been standing next to her durinh this giving her strenght, not in a basement of muzeum. Erenville part was also dissappoinment but for different reason. Dude lost his mother and she lost 30 years of her life and chance to ever see him again, but her biggest regreats were what? Not being able to explore more?? What about not being able to see a person who Erenville will become, or seeing your grandchildren??! I hatet her as a mother, Erenville deserved more, not just here but in entire expension.

If I am honest I do not think that the argument of needing to develop too many characters too quickly holds all that much water. They did similar things in shadowbringers with the chais, the people of the crystarium, the dwarfs, the people of slitherborough and so on and so forth. And they pulled it off. I really think that the undivided focus on wuk lamat as a protagonist with next to no breaks was what put people off, it is especially offputting for people that did not resonate with her at all. I personally thought she was an ok character but by the end I started skipping her monologue cutscenes because they became so predictable that it was no fun anymore.

I think one of the biggest issues with the pacing can be traced back the EW patch schedule. EW used all five patches on the Zero/Void story, so unlike every other expansion to date, DT didn't have the EW x.4/5 patches to do all the preliminary setup. The writers had to waste a lot of the leveling MSQ on super basic things like character and concept introductions, that in any other expansion would have already been done beforehand. That lead to an overly drawn out and simplified first arc, and a hurried final one. I feel like if they had had those two patches at the end of EW, the succession arc could have been finished with the level 93 dungeon and trial, leaving more time to focus on everything else.

Yoshi also said he thought the new story they have planned is better than the Hyd/Zodiark one. So I for one trust they have some crazy shit going forward. They just need to see which path they should take to get there. 7.0 feels like a lot of set up, a step back from the despair before that will later ramp up again.

The Iifa Tree key relic made by the ancient Milala's is super interesting. Has me feeling like Azem had something to do with it (given the final boss cutscene). We obviously didn't need it to summon, but it looked like the key recognised the magik. I hope we get some cool Azem stuff going forward with it. Given they fled from the South Sea Isles way back then maybe the Iifa Tree is in/near Meracydia. Dunno, super interested in what's next.

I fundamentally disagree with your reading of Estinien, because while his time in DT was sparse, it's still consistent with his character as he's been written in the past. Estinien has gotten involved when it matters, he stepped in in Stormblood to disable the Garlean's war machines, he partnered up with Gaius in Garlemald in Shadowbringers because the Empire was advancing in the WoL's absence, and he stepped up to defend Tuliyollal in DT. But outside of that, he's a child soldier who has spent his entire life with one purpose: Kill every fucking Dragon I see, especially Nidhogg, and after Heavensward, he is directionless, he has no purpose, his entire life goal is done, and because he's been training as a dragoon since he was a child, he doesn't know anything else. He talks in side stories about enjoying different food, and so he travels to the far east to try their food, he mentions in Shaaloani that you should try the fried sabotender. He's a wanderer, he's a foodie, he's always there when you need him, but he travels his own path JUST LIKE THE WARRIOR OF LIGHT Did I want more from him than Wild Westinien? Yes. Does his appearance in DT break from his already established character? Not in the slightest. Aside from the Warrior of Light, Estinien embodies what Venat and the seat of Azem stood for, he explores, he travels the world, he helps people where he's needed, not for the reward of doing so, but because he enjoys it, and he knows it's the right thing to do.

I think if Wuk Lamat stayed in Tuliyollal after her and Koana became Dawnservant, and either Koana came with us for the 2nd half, OR if they just focused on Krile and Erenville, it would have felt better. I didn't hate Wul Lamat, but I was already starting to feel exhaustion from her by the end of the first arc, and I would have really enjoyed if the story shifted back towards older characters again. Considering there was essentially no character development of Wuk Lamat in the later zones, it felt like there wasn't even a grand payoff. The only reason it ever felt important she was there at all was because of Gulool Ja. Also, it felt a bit cheap to have her attempt the Zenos style entrance in the last fight, especially considering I would have preferred almost anyone else break through that barrier by that point. Even if something is popular in an expansion, let it breathe for a bit before breaking it out again. All in all, the story was fine. It's probably the least I've enjoyed the MSQ since the Ala Mhigo arc of Stormblood. While it wasn't bad enough to make me want to quit or anything, it did take me several days to actually get going in the story because I was pretty ambivalent to what was happening until around the 95 dungeon.

i guess as a person who is simply invested in the world/story, stuff like not getting to see the scions doesnt bother me. we have moved to the teacher role(for now). we are the legendary dudes who can fix shit. we are the observers/teachers of the "next generation". some of my favorite scenes in early DT was thancred and urianger guiding koana. i think people dont really think of how to "comeback" after killing super god and going to space. they had to make a story that lowers the stakes, lowers the "darkness" and works with the fact we are literally stronger that anything that exists on this planet. i didnt see any problem taking the back seat and building some new character while getting to explore and learn new things. its just a chill xpac. i have some problems, im not wuk's biggest fan but its gonna grow and build and shit will happen. i dont like the idea that this is "aimed at a younger audience" or its not "mature enough". like the devs cant just want to tell a feel good story and hit the reset button on stuff. did we need to one up "drowning baby and suicide" to enjoy it? i totally agree that DT tried to do to much. i would have cut Alexandria for later and greatly expanded the royal selection(and added trading EX), maybe end with ja rul, and leave the threat of Alexandria for the patches....which when i think about it would have made a lot more sense for the normal xpac setup, with .0 being a temporary victory and .3 being the real ending... regardless as scene here and many other places, if DT was mainly the selection, people would have rioted

Without the context of Sphene being in on it, the Sphene/Wuk is kinda strange. Wuk's brother invaded their world, violently conquered and turned it from a utopia into a war machine, yet Sphene's the one apologizing to Wuk. It should be the other way round.

Also, on your point of "Does it make sense for Estinien to just chill here when he's done all this stuff..." yes, yes it does. It absolutely does. Estinien has had his country riding on him since he was a young child, since he trained to become a dragoon, then was chosen to inherit Nidhogg's eye. He's been bearing that legacy, that hatred, that cross on him throughout Heavensward and even Stormblood, Shadowbringers AND Endwalker. There is a part of Nidhogg lodged in him forever, and his immense power and training has also rendered him very much inept in mundane matters. He is straight up a forever soldier that misses the war soon as he gets out of it. The whole point of Endwalker, and when Hydaelyn looks upon him and speaks of the love she feels radiating from him now - it's of a wounded man finally healing, accepting his lot and learning to be more than just the perfect soldier that he is. That is why seeing him just wandering around Tural, having a good time, relaxing until he inevitably gets called back DOES make sense and is GREAT for the character. I want to see more of this Estinien, of the universe-saving veteran that bears Nidhogg's bones as his spear and Iceheart as his armor, I want him to just finally rest, to see him grow as a person beyond just being a walking WMD.

When YoshiP said "we are going to move away from desperately trying to avoid making players "hate" the game and instead experiment", he absolutely meant it. This expansion's story is very much that, an experiment, a measuring stick to see how far is too far, what lands, what doesn't. They could have easily just given players fanservice of their favorite established characters, an entire expansion of it - they chose not to. They deliberately chose to pry the story away from centering and revolving around us, the player character and wanted to see what happens if they put another character in that center role. I fully expect the patch storylines to be Scion-centric and WoL centric. I expect Wuk Lamat getting very little screen time from here on out. I expect the post 7.3 patch storylines and probably next expansion to be Azem-core, because that's just what the players seem to resonate with the most, being the big hero that saves everyone. And rather than just guess, they have very clear data on it now. I personally had a great time through this expansion. Maybe it's because I saw the visual and cinematic tells of these characters and could interpret them much clearer than the overt narration did, or maybe because I really just enjoyed the low stakes storyline of just having much less responsibility on my character's shoulders, just being there to step in when really needed and sort things out, or maybe because I just like history and antropology, and so this FF take on Americas felt great to me. But I can clearly see that there were a whole lot of folks that disliked for the exact same reasons. Hell, it's nearly the same sentiments that Stormblood has, and I deeply enjoyed it for the same history and antropology nerd reasons. Dawntrail truly is Stormblood 2, isn't it? But that just means that Shadowbringers 2 is around the corner. If there's any feedback that's crystal clear from fan reactions is that their players don't like people being happy, so you best prepare for some misery in the next expansion, hell, even the next patches. The entirety of Alexandria and Living Memory are proof that they were just holding back this time. Having lost parent and grandparent to debilitating disease, Living Memory will be with me for a long time.

Imagine dying, and then instead of being reborn, some idiot puts your soul in his brain chip, only to die in a stupid way because he thinks he's invincible, then you are consumed to keep him alive, perma dying in the process with no chance of ever being reborn. Finito. Done. Gone. And we're just letting S9 continue on like that post game? Because it's their "culture"?! It's disturbing as heck.

To be honest I don’t have a problem with the scions coming together when we need help with important stuff. The way I see it is that we are no longer an organization pushing toward a unified goal, but that doesn’t mean we stop knowing each other. If one of us needs help with something and there are people we know from our scion days who have the skills we need it makes perfect sense to ask them for help.

Mike, I think most would have point out, the lala have no idea how it work from the begining, its heavily hinted they(Lala) were from Aloalo island and the Speaker(the secret boss) made it happen. That's why although they had the relic for centuries, and have tried multiple attempts, they could not recreate a path home.

I will say that I think Krile's story is tbd. Much like SB patches focused on expanding untold stories/histories/motivations and the conclusion of those to the side of Zenos. This seems to set up the same way. It just (imo) seemed they obviously setup Preservation as group we would have to deal with and then we did not meet them. So I feel that is what is coming. The ones behind Sphene, the chase of Krile's parents, and the culture of this reflection will emerge and that will likely involve Krile even more. Just my tinhat prediction.

Imho I think Dawntrial would have been far better served if it solely focused on the Rite of Succession plotline with Valigarmanda as the main villain for for the .0 story. Maybe throw in another beast or two that are likewise in power for the trial fights and follow in the story beats of Heavensward. They may have been once revered/worshiped as these great protectors of Tural until they grew too big and powerful. Then the people began to fear them as symbols of great destruction and turned against them. And so Valigarmanda and the other beasts would very much follow in Nidhogg's path of vengeance. The trials would then have a double purpose of adding relief to the people following the subsequent release and wake of destruction that the beasts would cause. Learning about their cultures would come naturally but would not be the central focus. I could see at one point Alphinaud being attacked by Valigarmanda and put out of commission for a while with Estinien flashbacks to when Nidhogg killed his brother. But having grown since then he wouldn't let vengeance rule over him this time. So he would have a bigger role in the story tracking down Valigarmanda and the other beasts with Erenville helping out. A possible attempt would be made at peace talks with Valigarmanda with the assistance of Vritra and a reluctant Hraesvelgr (He only agrees to come because we saved Azdaja and that brought a him some peace) and would try to convince him that there can be peace between man and beast. But things would take a turn for the worse when Bakool Ja Ja comes to fight and slay Valigarmanda and fails. (If he could slay the beast that Galool Ja Ja failed to, surely that would be enough to make him Dawnservant, Right?) Soon after Valigarmanda's defeat and the Right of Succession is over we would learn that Zarool Ja manipulated the release of the beasts to help enforce his message of the cost of war into the hearts of the people and gain their support. Upon learning this, daddy Ja Ja would disqualify him for endangering the lives of their people. Zarool Ja would then have his resentment justified (somewhat) and escape through the gate to the golden city where the Alexandria plotline would slowly build up over the course of the .X patches. But no, we had to kill Valigarmanda after only a few short quests...

Generally consider myself an emotional person when it comes to entertainment, but I felt almost nothing going through this expansion (besides elation for the 4th zone when the MSQ hand-holding released for a brief glorious moment, and I was free to gallop across the plains). The last zone still has a strong melancholic vibe to it, but it seems unless some part of it hits on a personal level, that's about it. Sorry I'm not adopted, have said my fill to my parents, and haven't lost anyone I deeply love. Those scenes were more awkward than anything, and we really should have given them privacy rather than hanging around like weird voyeurs. Wish Krile's parents had given some reason for why they didn't remain in our shard with their daughter. What was so important that you'd abandon your child for? The way the father describes it, they were moments from being arrested, so, why go back to face that? Thankfully I watch boss guides before doing dungeons and trials. Voices were muted in advance, and haven't been turned back on. Watched an Eng/JP comparison of that scene, and yikes. Friend suggested that trans M->F can't push their voice like natural born females can without it cracking. If so, leads to the question of why they hired someone who can't do the role justice. Though, given how the JP audience apparently found it too much regardless, guess it doesn't really matter. Don't really mind the "Student surpasses the master" story, though feel it should take a little more a few weeks to go from zero to super-saiyan. Let's be honest, there's loads of individuals far stronger than WoL. Pretty much every boss outclasses us, and it's only through persistence that we win. Though I guess now that she's like 10x stronger than her father at his prime (who was 10x stronger than us), we should be calling on Wuk to solve our problems from now on. Personally, purely story, it was about 70-20-10. So 70% miss, 20% alright, 10% hit. For comparison EW was 40-20-40. Sorry, can't feel sympathy for Garleans. We should have push the boot on their neck when we had the chance. Disagree on your take that EW had less going on. Sharlayan and Radz-at-Han were the first two zones which both introduced and dealt with politics and a new culture. Then it was Garleans and the de-escalation of war. It wasn't until the 4th zone that we get into the Zodiark/Hydaelyn/Meteion stuff. There were just as many new characters and relationships to examine. The twin's mum, their dad, the council, the alchemists, the dragon-boy, the dragon, the loppiritts, that crazy dude, all the pre-sundered characters, erinville, that garlean dude we like for some reason etc etc.

Wasn't Emet Selch Compelled due to Zodiark? There was no out or turning back for him, much like Elidibus. The plan was a hail marry, and was fumbled before we even started, yet they persisted. That part always bothered me, the plan was kinda shit and at best a band-aid.

  • @thesunthrone
    @thesunthrone6 сағат бұрын

It absolutely was - but it was also working. Undeniably, the Rejoinings were making the souls of the Source denser as the reflections were folded in. Zodiark was being piece together as well. It was working. The problem was, then never really knew what was wrong with their star in the first place. Zodiark was a stopgap measure to stop the Final Days and try figure out what to do next. Personally, I think Emet-Selch used tempering of himself as an excuse - because admitting that he was in terrible pain and deeply missed his world and his friends just wasn't in character for him. Elidibus was the Heart of Zodiark by that point, he died the second Zodiark was summoned and what we saw was akin to the Twelve - someone with the faint memories of who they once were, but ultimately a different entity that was utterly devoted to their cause. Lahabrea, meanwhile... After Pandaemonium storyline, it's clear that he was being influenced by the remnant of Athena upon his soul. Them conjuring Ultima spell with the exact same incantation, Lahabrea even back in ARR needing to be reminded by Elidibus that it's all for Zodiark... He was very much a different man from his Ancient incarnation.

I had already completed it, so i was the person they would react to cause they didnt want to spoil the story for others. In my mind, Dawntrail has 3 different phases or tones. The first tone is very "amazing race" or indiana jones or one of those kind of movies where people are traveling all over. Its an adventure and its often comical. You are along for the ride. Its the palette cleanser for the last 10 years. The other 2 phases are more of what i think people are used to.

I feel we give little credit to Sphene's conundrum. If my parents were on a terminal illness and I could keep extending their lives, and a blissful one at that somehow, I would give everything I don't have to do so. And I don't just mean monetarily, I'll grind people up so help me. I'm not siding with her, of COURSE it had to be stopped, but I generally hear people being very dismissive of her and the people here as if they were "just code" when the game goes to great lengths to make it feel like this isn't some crappy digital purgatory, this is a blissful continuation of life after death with *tons* of possibilities. They are, for all intents and purposes, alive. Anyways I'm excited for the post expansion MSQ updates.

While I give them credit for trying something different with Wuk Lamat, FFXIVs strengths have always been on fleshing out it's ensemble cast. Even when supporting Lyse in SB, you had the Doman crew there as well taking uo a big part od the story. Not everything hinged on one character. Even in shounen anime, the protagonist is usually surrounded by a cast of characters people tend to like a lot more than the MC, who many times have their own big arcs. Wuk, unfortuantely, just wasn't strong enough of a character to carry the entire expac on her own and they didn't flesh out the other cast enough to balance that. Especially with how much other stuff they tried to cram in and rushed through. The game kinda needed to be two expacs.

Personally I enjoyed the expac story and was able to suspend my disbelief enough to not have too many issues with the story but your point on them trying to do too much with too little time hits the nail on the head imo. Regardless, the Story is only the setup for the entirety of the expac and it should be quite the enjoyable and content laden expac for the next 2 years. Everything I've seen so far has been enjoyable content-wise and I'm super excited to jump into this Savage tier. It'll be my first time progging savage even though I've been playing since 2021 and I can't wait. Despite the initial stumble I can't help but have an overwhelming sense of optimism for the game going forward.
