    yes! Jo was settling for Laurie because she was disappointed about NY and she felt lonely after coming home. She wasn't in love laurie... While Amy has always loved him and laurie too realised that he loved Jo only as a friend.

    i feel really bad for amy because her whole life she tried to do everything right, marry well and was always second to jo in everything. And then at the last minute before she was going to marry, laurie confesses his love for her and then amy thinks he just wants her bc he can’t get jo, she was always the ‘people pleaser’ and tried to do everything right for everyone

    @@gia7034 i personally don’t think jo loved laurie. in the end she felt so lonely that if laurie would have asked her again to marry him she would have said yes but solely for the reason that she wanted to be loved, but not because she loved him romantically. and also i think that laurie and jo together as a couple would not have ended well. jo hated elegant society whereas laurie fit perfectly in it. they both needed someone to push them to become better and for jo it was friedrich because he honestly critiqued her work. for laurie it was amy because she see’s that laurie has talent and intelligence but no focus. amy makes laurie focus and i think that’s why their relationship is more dynamic, as is jo’s and friedrich’s.

    @@gia7034 that’s quite sad how you phrase it, in my opinion it sounds like u were the type of person that after the burning scene hated the character so much you couldn’t let her grow into the amazing character that is. And yes she had accomplishments but didn’t get everything she wanted. At some point everyone would be more proud that Jo is a writer and that will always overshadow Amy’s work. And that sounds quite selfish the way you worded your comment, jo never had romantic feelings for Laurie, she saw him as an escape from ending up lonely. And if that was your sister and best friend would u act so selfishly about their romance bc u didn’t find love for yourself. Anyways that’s just what I got from reading your comment.

    After several rewatches you kind of realize that Laurie is the only person who sees all of Amy's flaws and never made her feel bad for them. He was endeared when she was bratty or whiny, he admired her when she was headstrong, and he even said "yes, but I like that" when Jo asked him if Amy hassled him all around Europe. Laurie has always held a sort of affection towards her, and has never directed any negative feelings or misgivings towards her. Even in the beginning ballroom scene, his bad temperament was less directed at her and more at his lingering bitterness towards Jo, his jealousy of Fred, and his disappointment at himself. No wonder Amy loved him so much, ever since she met him.

    It's because most adaptations of Little Women haven't given her a very flattering depiction. They always tend to focus on Jo and while Jo spends all her time not caring about what others think of her, Amy is all too aware of it. And while Jo always knows that she wants to be a great writer, the thing that Amy always knows is that she will marry rich. They make her character seem petulant, petty, and preening. The 2019 Little Women gives us an Amy that is not drawn in broad, over simplified strokes, but given depth and complexity not afforded to her by previous adaptations. Here, she is not defined by her pettiness but her prowess in playing the game set before her, her clear-eyed perspective of reality, and a steeliness that might have once struck viewers as only petulance. Of course, in Greta Gerwig’s capable hands, all the March sisters have become more real.

    You must not have read the book. Laurie was not the reason Amy burned the book. It was because she and Jo were temperamental opposites and Amy was the spoiled baby used to getting what she wanted, so she got angry and burned the book when Jo wouldn’t let her go to the theater with her and Laurie. This “I’ve been in love with you all my life” is NOT in the book-it was written for this movie. Amy never showed any indication of deep feelings for Laurie in the book until Europe.

    I see myself a lot in Amy. Even though I am a writer and as non committal as Jo, I am the youngest who always grew up second fiddle to my sister in everything. Then in my love life I was 2nd to everyone else and no one saw the love I had under my stern voice. Amy is so strong in her femininity and she is beautiful and complicated and Laurie seems to be the only one who sees all sides of her and loves them all. He understands her and she in return acts as a push to help Laurie finally grow up from his teenage self. I love it. And I love how good Amy made me feel about myself and how Laurie rekindled my hope to find someone to truly get me. I hope more young girls will embrace themselves and stop trying to force themselves into 1 solid box. People have the right to be complex.

    i love the ballroom scene so damn much, because we see how amy matured and how broken laurie is, who we’ve seen to be charming and kind and sweet and a little immature, turn into a bittersweet and apathetic mess because of jo. and thank god for amy, because she doesn’t put up with it and is rightfully hard on him abt it, and obviously hurt about the “spending fred’s riches” dialogue from laurie, because how could he? she has always seen the happy part of laurie growing up so it must’ve been so off putting and upsetting to see laurie in such a state. i love them sm also, i would like to dedicate this whole section to laurie’s expressions in paris when fred is around/mentioned: when they’re in the studio, laurie is upbeat as always…until he asks if amy would say yes to fred if he ever got down on his knee, which is where he crowds into himself almost, his eyes going red and his straight face turning into a small frown. it’s absolutely devastating to him because he thought amy wouldn’t have actually said that. and then, holy shit, the BOW SCENE??? amy’s obliviousness and unawareness to the way laurie is looking at her, staring at her longingly, as if this would be his last chance to ever touch her. amy’s spent her whole life loving him yet she can’t figure out that laurie is obviously starting to feel something?? i mean it is the 1860s but yk…anyway, and then the scene as he tells amy she’s beautiful and *is* beautiful, he’s on the verge of tears istg because he knows she basically belongs to fred (which can allude to his fault since he introduced fred to the marches all those years ago) and knows he can’t really say anything else at that moment. and then when he watches amy go to fred after he comes off the carriage and greets him with such a smile, he’s heartbroken and has the same look of despair he had when his proposal was rejected from jo. he was longing for her and amy was so oblivious to it holy shit

    One of the reasons that I love this movie (and the Little Women story in general) is because it’s one of the few stories I’ve read that shows that a love can be real and can change you as a human being in the deepest of ways without it having to be THE STORY of your life. During the entire movie we ship Laurie and Jo, but in the end Jo’s story isn’t about romantic love, but about friendships, her love for her sisters and her growth as a human being. And I just think that such a lovely beautiful and timeless concept that was far beyond it’s time.

    The movie does a great job of giving each girl time in the spotlight just as Louisa May Alcott (jo) wrote the book. Laurie was a part of their family -indoctrinated into their fiscally poor, but richly relational home while he had all the wealth, but had a home life starved of noise and excitement. He's not portrayed as romantically interested in all of them, but rather the brother figure they don't have. It's definitely about the dynamic of filling each other up in ways they all need. It's a different kind of love and sometimes out of that, romantic love grows.

The slow build you have shown along with the build of the song so perfectly incapsulates their relationship in this movie. The coloring was a wonderful choice, and frankly so were all the other choices you made for this video. I think you did an absolute incredible job, and I’m so happy I stumbled upon this video. Thank you for making it!

And the ending was perfection too, hearing just the audio of Jo asking Laurie if he was in love and him confidently saying Yes. Sigh. I honestly feel bad for Amy, especially when she was a child. Jo was usually really rude and disrespectful to her and treated her poorly for having childish urges and wanting to go to things like the theatre and getting constantly told ‘no’ or ‘your too young’ . People treat her badly outside of the little women world too, she was told she was immature her whole childhood (she was 12, what did they except?) and got mad at her when she acted how they depicted her. I really love Amy and don’t understand that hate she gets.

  • @kayewilde8871
    @kayewilde88712 жыл бұрын

    I actually love Amy's voice. It's strong, commanding, and powerful. She's a she alpha and she's the perfect woman to control the vulnerable Laurie. They're a perfect balance. I love that Jo did not really end up with anyone (although she was forced to write that she did). I remembered when laurie told her that she will fall in love and would die for that person and he was going to sit and watch, I know he only said that out of spite but I'm glad that it didn't really happen yiu know. The fact that afterall Jo's priority is her and her freedom is very revolutionary especially at that time. Sure, she had a weak moment when out of loneliness she wanted Laurie back and maybe, if he hadn't married Amy before they got home and reads the letter, he probably would have proposed to her which of course will make this whole movie pointless as she didn't love Laurie that way.
