This reminds me of an incident when i was a teen and a friend of mine (a couple years older) was giving me and a couple other friends a ride home in his dad's car right after a heavy downpour. Anyway, we came up to a huge puddle that covered the road almost out to the centerline, there was a woman on the sidewalk, might have been waiting on the bus and my friend didn't slow down enough, next all I saw was a wall of water that looked exactly like that of a slalom water skier heading for this lady and totally soaked her head to foot. I looked at my friend in horror, who didn't even stop to apologize, but was laughing while he drove away and said dude that was so fucked up. We're not friends anymore, I don't have room in my life for people of low character.

I did that while driving an ambulance, and I was mortified! I had to circle around to offer the poor cyclist a blanket and make sure he was okay. It’s been over 10 years but every time I remember I still feel terrible. 😣

In the UK, the train line would be shut for about 20 years with that snow on the track.

I work for a railroad where some of our tracks are used by Amtrak and when I first started I was told to be on the lookout for them because when they come through they haul ass lol Yeah they come thundering through so don’t stand too close to the platform. That yellow line is there for a reason and yes you can easily get clipped by a train. And contrary to what everyone believes, no you don’t always hear them coming. And things like snow can dampen the sound of moving trains. Sometimes you hear a faint hiss and sometimes, you don’t. They honk (mostly) but there’s always someone with their noise canceling earphones in. Look both ways because they travel in both directions usually. And just be safe out there people, nothing is worth your life and no one ever beats a train.

They thought there'd be a pretty little spray that felt like snow flakes and would make nice video for their snap/IG/whatever. Experience shows that people are generally bad at recognising risk.

I am a 40-year old boy. I am versed in business, politics, science, culture, and more.... But if i am driving I will always hit a puddle. Driving with a business colleague on a trip in a nice rental in Georgia we pass a family walking. It was post rain and a large puddle the size of a lake was along the road. Without a second thought I drove into the puddle... “Dddwwwwwiiissshhhhh!!!!”” Ever hit so much water you lose control for a moment? After I regained control a wall of water the height of ten feet it seemed, like parting of the Red Sea 🌊 itself , came crashing down on a family on the sidewalk. My colleague,”What the hell are you doing?! You just *soaked* that family back there!” I looked in the rear view mirror. Their outfits were clearly soaking. Ooops.

The way it held together in a spray of dense snow rather then pulverized into fine particles, yeah, I’d say that wave of dense snow probably hit like a heavy wet woolen carpet at high speed.

During Michigan winters during the 70s and 80s, there were as many kids hanging on to the bumpers of school buses as riding in the seats. Everything was great....till you hit that one damn dry patch.

@@thePronto they cleaned the platform instead of the rails, they thought it better to make people not step on snow rather than possibly prevent injuries of ice and rocks being sprayed into peoples facing, possibly derailing the train entirely which can be millions of dollars in damages In addition, not only did they do that, but they also thought it would be a great idea to sweep the snow ONTO THE TRACKS, IMPROVING THE LIKELIHOOD OF ALL OF WHAT I JUST SAID

That's actually a real thing. People who are recording video concentrate on what they're seeing on the screen or in a viewfinder and, because the view is different, don't really relate what they're seeing to what's happening in the real world. Camera operators in war zones have gotten killed because they were so wrapped up in documenting what was happening, they didn't realize that it was time to run. In defense of the people on the platform, the snow didn't really start flying until the train was already in the station.

Reminds me of some of the scenes in Dr. Zhivago film. I wonder what the "standard" orders on speed for an Amtrak train are, depending on the amount of snow the train will barrel into. Will a certain amount cause it to derail ?
