Amish Grocery Haul | Brookside Discount Grocery

It's been quite a while since we've taken you guys shopping with us at Brookside Discount Grocery. I typically only shop here once a year or so. While they do carry some bulk items, a lot of what they have to offer is scratch / dent / past the "best buy" date items. But, not everything is past the date - so you just have to check. What they have in stock varies each time we visit, so you never know what you're going to find ♥ My entire trip was around $80 for everything.

Great store to shop at. WOW Rachel. I refuse to turn my oven on to make bone broth from bones I want to keep warm over night. I saved in the freezer until it hits 35 below zero outside. You are a champ and people around you are blessed.

We live in an area here in Southwest Missouri, and have two large communities of Amish, plus another one that just started. We live right smack dab in the middle of one large Amish community, then the other one is about 20 miles West of us. I heard recently that a third Amish community has started about 30 miles North of us. There's never a shortage on fresh cows milk, butter, cream, and buttermilk. ❤Then we have a large Mennonite community here as well, and one of them own and run about 3 different discount grocery stores. I buy about 90% of my food there, and save tons on food every month. We couldn't eat as well as we do, without our discount grocery store. I love it! I also get cases of the fruit and veggie pouches for my 2 1/2 year old grand baby. She loves those! I only go to Walmart about every 6 months, or have my daughter pick up a few things for me every month.

Absolutely love ours, I get all my spices and most dry goods there as well as canning supplies. They also get cases of meats from several Amish communities in PA that are shipped to their local store here in ETN. Well stocked on chicken breasts and thighs, apple maple grillers and bacon. Now they are taking orders for Michigan blueberries and PA peaches and apples.

Hubs and I will be traveling to PA this fall to scope out the state for a retirement move. Can't wait to check out Lancaster county and visit as many Amish stores and farmer's markets as possible. We're from TX so no big Amish communities around here. Learning about and experiencing their culture is on my bucket list.

WHAT?! I've been going to the wrong store? Haha! My husband and I have taken a couple of trips up from Grand Rapids, and I thought you were going to Whispering Pines, just west of Fremont! It was the only Amish store I found on Maps in the area. Even funnier, we always go back via Newaygo and get lunch at Brewworks outside of Fremont (and then run by Bird's to see what kind of meat deals we can find), so we must have driven right by this store and never even noticed. Ah well.....just another fun place to stop at next time!

Please video your cheese making. I’ve done it. Animal rennet works the best. I keep mine in the freezer. You’ll need citric acid to trigger the curdling. Meijers should have it by their canning supplies. There’s 2 alchemy points in cheese making. Having firm cuttible curds. And heating it and stretching it to get to get it like cheese. Then you can buy cultures to flavor it some. You have Pickle Crisp (calcium chloride). You can sometimes use that to firm up too soft a milky curds. But if you use too much it comes out dry like farmers cheese and doesn’t stretch. Noreen’s Kitchen and Gavin Webber have videos on cheese making. Store whole milk works quite well too. Cheese making is somewhat of an art.

Off topic correcting my comment about the weeds. No weeds because hubby heavy mulch of chopped oak and maple leave in the fall. Removed to plant our potatoes then covered using same mulch. No weeds. Sandy packed soil so converted to no dig in our established garden. Thanks for bringing us along.

I love going shopping at the Amish store. Favorite thing to buy is spices at deep discount prices. I did want to say Rachel I know you are very health conscious so you might want to research more on how Splenda is made. It's something they take out and what they replace it with that concerns me. I won't buy it or recommend it for anyone.

What is the difference between regular molasses and blackstrap molasses? I've heard/read that blackstrap is not the better choice. I don't remember why - if it was too strong/intense or what. Don't remember if it was used for that person's baking or to make brown sugar. Thanks for the fun shopping trip. Wish I had an Amish store close by.
