"Grandma won't tell" this is how grandmas and grandpas should be. It's always their job to be the people you can tell a secret and you'll always be able to count on them to take it to the grave no matter what. I love my grandma and this is one of the reasons why I will always trust her for the rest of my life.

exactly. I have so many fond memories of both my grandfather and my grandmother telling me this. Grandma, when she snuck me sweets, a few coins for sweets, or an extra piece of cake (she was from the generation that showed love b feeding you) Or grandma, when we got up to some shenanigans that my parents deemed "unsafe" to which he would smile and nod and take me away to do it anyways. It's a nice perspective shift, and it's lovely to see teenage and young adult people appreciating things. When travel is relatively cheap and everything is on TV and in the movies, it's hard to find someone older than elementary school who is having a truly new, positive experience. And the fact that everyone around them is reacting with positivity at the beauty and the opportunity to experience, rather that jaded at the world or incredulous at the lack of experience, is so endearing.

I just want to say that Amish are free to vacation, see the ocean, go to Florida, go scuba diving, to shows, aquariums, zoo's, anything they want to do. They are not sheltered in that way at all. Also, most of the Amish travel extensively, more than an average person. People only know what they see on shows. I met a very similar girl to these who grew up in a small religious community in the desert. She visited Australia during a big solar storm so I took her to the beach. Her idea of a beach was the same "trees and water" she never imagined something like the aurora reflected off the ocean. We talked to a cameraman and he let us see his long-exposure footage of rainbow lights sliding across the sky. It's nice knowing she can take these memories home with her. I don't think anyone else from her town had heard of an aurora and she saw it with her own eyes. Light from the heavens :)

i think a lot of people think parasailing is a very intense and thrilling experience, which it can be if you really work yourself up but if you don’t and you stay calm, it’s actually really really peaceful. it’s super quiet up there, you can see everything the light touches, and overall one of the most relaxing things i’ve personally ever done. definitely would recommend, plus you might see some dolphins!

And they grow up on farms where death and life go hand in hand. You're the one who sounds like you've got a superiority complex. I am a sixty year old gay man and I just cried when I saw the two of you see the ocean for the first time. "This is the most beautiful day of my life," one of you said. I'm still crying. I see so much beauty in being Amish and I see so much beauty in experiencing life beyond being Amish. I agree with the one of you who said you'd prefer the peace of an out house rather than the "robot" toilets that flush the moment you stand up, sometimes even before you sit down! I love the images of the canned peaches and other homemade canned goods. One can admire the simplicity of the Amish while also admiring the beauty of modern conveniences and life. I cried again when the two of you went up in the parasol flying over the ocean and I just know that your grandma, your dear, dear grandma is going to get a big hug from Jesus when she makes her way into the next realm. She wanted you to "feel closer to God" by experiencing more of life than you had been allowed to. Bless your grandma, girls! And bless you two! 🙂

According to their teachings God gave every living thing a purpose, if you like a job to live within the parameters God had laid out. So to do something alien to those teachings is a sin. I once spent some time with a mennonite community in Belize and be honest I have never met a more respectful, open, honest and hardworking set of people. The younger children were allowed to ask questions and be as inquisitive as they wanted so they could gain knowledge of us outsiders so long as they showed respect to us and we showed respect to them.
