    This isn't just an amish thing, but a relatively normal one. I've seen urbanites for example who don't learn to drive or own a car and would have a difficult time adjusting to rural or suburban areas where driving is needed. Many of us tend to take driving for granted, but having had to teach fellow soldiers in the Army how to drive opened my eyes that its not as easy to someone in their mid 20s or even older who have never driven before. They relied on public transportation. A modern thing that isn't universally available, or feasible. There are many things people don't learn to deal with when they don't leave a 10 mile radius of where they grow up, or even a 100 mile. How you see the amish is how many military veterans see civilians if we're going to be honest here. We have the benefit of traveling around the country and world that most people do not.

    When they encounter YOUR "Reality." I would happily argue that they live far closer to any sort of reality of the human condition than we do, in our gypsum powder houses surrounded by plastic boxes eating food with roots that never touched soil with no connection the natural passing of the seasons or the local climate. No one is required to stay in the Amish community, but nearly all choose to do so after a year or two of going outside and living a "modern" life for a little while. The many amish kids I know wonder how the hell we live the way we live. They find it depressing, mean-spirited, and isolated, with no support networks and no meaning. They learn to navigate it just fine.

  • @taemien9219

    @taemien9219

    13 күн бұрын

    @@razorfire1904 I mostly agree with what you are saying, because its pretty much true. Though I would point out that many Amish that try the modern world tend to go to the extremes of big cities. They're ignorant of the fact there is a big difference between Rural and Urban living. As well as Rural-Suburban and Urban-Suburban. I'd wager most Amish that go to Rural modern areas fit in just fine. Finding the culture of hospitality and helping one's neighbors very similar to where they come from. When I watch these videos about how the Amish live and what they have in their houses, what they eat, and even some of their hobbies, I quickly see they have more in common than not. If they were to leave say an Amish farm and go to a modern privately owned family farm. They would only really see equipment and amenity differences. Farm equipment, indoor lighting, and indoor plumbing, as well as internet access would really be the only differences. They get culture shocked when entering big cities like Chicago, Miami, New York, and so forth.. well so do many 'modern' people too. And one thing we have to remember. When this country was founded. The way Amish and Mennonites lived wasn't weird. They were part of everyone's communities and some of their things were only sorta of 'different'. As time went on we adapted to new technology, and so did they. Though they diverged on how they approached its use. I mean when you look at many of their items in their houses, not everything is handmade. They do buy stuff from the Wal-Marts and grocery stores. Heck they even eat McDonalds and drink sodas (though probably with a bit more moderation than the rest of us). Its unfortunate because outsiders are jealous and covetous of them. They see a people trying their best to live a righteous life and feel threatened by that. They wish for everyone to be as sinful and cynical as they are. It would make them comfortable with their wrongs. I mean look at many comments on these sorts of videos, you see people point out the shortcomings a few Amish individuals have. Well all communities have wrong doers. We're all human at the end of the day. Specifically how the family treats their daughter when she says she wants to leave. As if a anti-imperialistic family in a big city wouldn't do the same if their child decided to join the military instead of go to college. The difference is the Amish are just trying harder and are sacrificing more than their contemporaries. They don't do this to inflate their egos. They as a community don't think they are any more better than their fellow Americans. They just have a different view and way of doing things. They just think our ways are more tempting towards doing bad things. Not that they are bad of themselves. And well... many of us don't like to admit that is true.

    You dont actually need an ID to fly domestically per the law. Those real id signs are not factual, they just want you to get a real id. If you dont have one the TSA will do extra checks and make you wait. This person saying they cant fly was just for tv. Ultimately it is up to the TSA for if they consider you a risk or not with no id, but most of the time they let you through.

    I agree with David. I think they were more curious about the existence of escalators and wanted to experience as much of the "English" world as possible, so they decided to use them instead of the normal stairs. Just imagine being in an Amish community for your whole life, with your exposure to the outside world being the occasional glimpse of cars, riding in one occasionally and the occasional rural McDonalds; then suddenly going somewhere like a big airport or a mall, and seeing a bunch of technological devices that you don't even know the names of. I had the same fascination even though I'm not Amish, I did live in a rural community and saw escalators for the first time when I was like 13 years old. lol

    these people are fakers, and it's annoying that they made another show about them after it was demonstrated that the "flirting couple" in the first series had a child together long before they started filming. When they lie once, they have lost ALL credibility. I'm amazed they went ahead with this show, given that it is tainted beyond belief due to that first season. That said, I fully agree with your sentiment, but wish the show was about REAL people fleeing the Amish, and not fakers who had left years before.

    Actually, I have seen a video about a group of younger ex-amish that live together in a big house and kind of help each other out. It is almost like a halfway home until they get more adjusted to "English" culture. They exist, but I mean, it was just in one town (I think the one I saw was around the Lancaster, PA area) and the Amish live in multiple states, so it might not be available to everyone.
