Amish Country

Lancaster County, PA is the breadbasket of the Mid Atlantic with all the bountiful farms and countryside. It is also the home of the Amish people. We visited with the chief tour guide of the county, took a ride on his carriage and learned a great deal about their way of life

I am glad that I am not the only one who would love to live near the Amish people. We, in my culture in New York State, also do not put our elderly in nursing homes. So what if we are not comfortable or do not have our personal space, we take care of our parents. They gave us a good home, and they deserve to live in good and loving surroundings with their families.

A lot of people think that, but you wouldn’t want to. You can start living that way without joining the community. Just be ok with working non stop from 4 or 5am until sundown, having no higher education and get used to repetitive and boring tasks as your only form of entertainment. They shun the outside world until they need it, and example is hospitals. It’s not as perfect as these people make it sound. I lived near an Amish community for several years and I heard some awful stories from women who left. They particularly have a hard life.

I live in the heart of this Amish settlement. A lot of what you say has some truth to it, but it's an attempt to distort the facts, overall. Some have cell phones and use computers, some own cars for business use only. The laundry comment is weird, since they haven't washed clothes by hand in generations, and most have washing machines at home. No dryers allowed. They will hang wash on long, high clothes lines in the driving rain, or pounding snow, if they need to. It drys eventually. They frequently use English taxi, van and local trucking services, since it's the practical way to do the job of going 20 miles to Costco, or shipping goods across the county. Nothing I discussed make them any less Amish, or less obedient to their beliefs.

@@louisehakanson4910 No, there are many different sects, of Amish Believers. Huge variations in rules for every aspect of daily living. The overall belief system, and hard rules like no cars for daily use, no driving vehicles on the road, no power lines to the house, etc. are the same everywhere, but a lot of the other stuff is open to the rulings of the bishops and elders. There are groups in my neighborhood that use tractors for field work, and others that are forbidden to do so. There are church groups in my neighborhood that allow pedal bikes, while most Lancaster county Amish forbid them. In the big valley area of central PA. there are at least three different types of Amish, and they dress in ways that, and drive buggies, that look totally distinct from each other.

@@ontoyoualways9183 Had you bothered to see the remark I replied to, you wouldn't have wasted your time with that moot remark. I was referring to them wanting to join- "become" Amish after being an outsider/ English/outsider. My mother left the Amish as a teenager when she left for Rumspringa in Ohio. So I am extremely well versed about the Amish, aside from living not far from two vacinities of Amish and Mennonites. And they dont need us English/outsiders for transportation. They have and would much rather deal with Mennonites then 'others' or 'English'. Most (note I say most, not all, only deal with others or English when they have to.They much prefer dealing with Mennonites for the things they need that they are not permitted to have or use,by their laws. And they do NOT under any circumstances ever deal with anyone that left the AMISH,or their children even decades later regardless of the reason that they left even if it was their (the Amish's) fault. I have had positive and negative experiences with the Amish, but would never want to live under their rules.

Being raised by an Amish mother I believe I know far more than you could ever even though you "talk" with some friendly ones.Believe me talking with some friendly Amish there is no possibility they would open up about all their hidden life styles. They are ALL forbidden to.If they told outsiders inside secrets they would be thrown out themselves without even a chance to defend themselves. If you knew as much as you proclaimed to know you would know that much.Even the friendly one have to be very careful and secretive. It depends on their and their immeduate families very existence to staying IN the Amish. They have to protect themselves and their families and lifestyles. You clearly know very little about the Amish. No matter how much you would question your Amish friends you would never get full honest answers. They can not answer you without putting themselves at risk. You really only know the basics.and to question them would only make them nervous and scare them."IF" you knew the Amish you would know All that. The Amish community where this video was filmed is growing fast. There are currently 300 Amish operated, one room school houses here. The video claimed a population of 20-22K, currently that number stands at 38K. The local Amish community doubles in size, roughly every twenty years. Finding room for them all, in a county that has a huge population and an extremely strong economy, coupled with very strict land use rules and growth limits on all types of new building, is tough. There is no real chance for many Amish growing up today to continue the farming lifestyle. As a result, there number of fields that the Amish have gone into, to make a living, is stunning. Everything from manufacturing, and construction, to tourism, furniture building, retail sales, and dozens of other things.

The Amish are not exactly "religious". It is a way of life. Their Bible is in German that they can't read since their language is Pennsylvania Dutch. They don't study the Bible. They follow the Bishops rules. Each order has different rules. Figure that out.

Progress is not all what it's cracked up to be ... not by a long shot ... and for those who need a more worldly experience and a breakout from tradition... go for it ... whatever brings you peace and fulfillment

I live in the middle of this Amish settlement. Like others above have stated, this is a cult. You are not an individual, you do not have free will. If you decide to study the bible or discuss your concerns, doubts or other beliefs with others in your community, they can and will toss you out. If you think peace and happiness is working like a dog, six days a week, from before sun up to dark, being educated at an elementary level, with a lot of subjects simply ignored, and not being allowed to do anything that you are used to, as a free person, go for it. If you are a woman with an opinion, a believer in evolution, a believer in anything above a crude and basic education, somebody that would like to jump in the car and go on vacation, somebody that believes in equality, or free thought, or hundreds of other things you can not do, talk about, or think about, as an Amish person, it's not your gig.

They HONOUR the world around them in everything they do (even in the treatment of cattle, explained in this video) ... they have NOT succumb to material temptations, but lived simply when so many others have failed to do so. Freedom is an Earth given right upon birth. They owe no one ... but they HONOUR Nature's Creation in every way ... there ... is true power for self, life and family. ♡

This video brought back good memories of my childwood days, and lives with me forever. God continue to Bless your efforts.
