America's Most OBSCURE AMISH ENCLAVE... Upstate New York's Unlikely AMISH Settlement

Ойын-сауық

The Amish here have only settled in this region over the past decade. Many of the original settlers have moved on but others have replaced them. Being a non tourist region these Amish have lived in relative obscurity for years. Here's a look at one of the most insular Amish groups in North America. Originating North of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in New Wilmington these Amish have been seeking affordable farming oftentimes hundreds of miles from their parent settlement.

Do you know of any other Amish church districts that fellowship with them (share ministers, intermarry). It would be telling to know. I’ll ask some Old Order friends in Lancaster what they know of them if anything.

@@LancoAmish I grew up in Kokomo, there were 2 church districts, one is almost gone now, a lot of them moved out, some left the Amish, but yes they go back and forth with most, if not all of Northern Indiana, Arthur Illinois, Kalona, Iowa, etc. So they associate with a lot of other Old Order Amish. They are the only ones that use tractors, I believe. I’m not sure on that though.

@@jameshershberger5284 , I just spoke with an Amish friend of mine here in Lancaster. He didn’t know about the tractor use in Kokomo but the Kalona, Iowa OOA also use tractors in the field up to 75 HP he believes. He thinks there’s another group in PA also using tractors…he’s going to find out for sure. The Lancaster Amish do indeed fellowship with the Iowa group. They’ve had their ministers preach here and Vice versa. The tractor usage is a big deal but not enough on its own to break fellowship necessarily.

@@LancoAmish Ok, didn’t realize about Kalona, but here I believe they are allowed up to 120 HP, and 4 row equipment. I know the south church here recently allowed roll over protection bars, and they can even use a cab tractor, if side and rear windows are removed. Kokomo is a fairly old settlement, but never grew large. They have been using tractors for years, my grandfather used tractors when he farmed back in the day. I know some of the northern Indiana churches now use tractors for some transportation, such as for business purposes, but are not allowed to use them for farming. One of the fellas that moved from Kokomo up north, has a lawn care/landscaping business, and he uses a tractor to transport equipment. Just recently found your channel, and I am learning about other Amish churches that I didn’t even know about!

75 years ago everyone around here farmed this way, milking a few cows and hauling their milk to the nearest cheese factory, usually cooperatively owned. Haulage with teams and sleighs lasted well into the 50's until they began plowing the rural roads. Then they discontinued shipping in cans and forced bulk tanks on everyone in the 60's. We were some of the last still shipping cream in cans into the early 90's in Ontario.

The Amish here in this video are here in my home town literally right down the road from me is the milk house the truck was picking up milk at. It looks like they had no idea this was being filmed. They are good people and I’m friends with many of them here in Whitehall. One correction is they also heat with coal, they purchase a tractor trailer load of bagged coal every fall and split it amongst the families.

Just to add.........the Amish moved into NYS 30+ years ago, buying old farm steads that the corporate farms missed or didn't want with small acres, some came and some left, but as the state regulations and "rules" get worst, more will be leaving. Selling their land in rich PA forced them to NY, which had many closed down small farm steads, If the state would have passed the legislation on wood fires, and outdoor wood furnaces, which it didn't, the 'off the grid' people couldn't heat their homes. I know of one family that moved out because of the state interfering with their production process.

Perhaps you should also understand there is no expectation of privacy in almost 99% of open areas. Do you give your permission to be filmed everytime you’re in public? I spent 1/3 of my life within the community where these folks live and 1/3 more in the biggest Amish settlement in the world.
