Amiga Longplay: The Great Giana Sisters

Ойындар

After falling into a dark, deep sleep, Giana finds herself in a mysterious dreamworld where she must possess the magical diamond in order to wake up.
I completed the game, collecting (what I believe is) the maximum number of diamonds possible (without killing Giana, that is). That includes completing stage 32 twice, before entering the lair with the magical diamond.
At the beginning of stage 23 I miss a diamond due to a game bug (the stone needed to reach the diamond won't drop to the ground).
After the game itself, I've added sequences of where to locate the 8 stage warps (stages 3, 6, 8, 17, 19, 22, 25 and 28).
(Source recorded at 50 fps.)

It’s not just satisfying listening back to it now for nostalgia feels. It had those same good feels at the time. Many Amiga games had superb soundtracks. Super Cars was a classic soundtrack… but there were many. Worms. Another World, Lemmings, Speedball 2, Sensible World of Soccer, Shadow of the Beast, Turrican, North & South, and on and on.

@@savedfaves That’s the thing though. I never heard of this game or played when I was a kid. I just discovered this as a 42 year old. But it still strikes me with a sense of nostalgia some how. It’s just so…. Idk….. the feeling this sound invokes is just weird. Almost disturbingly, but in a good way.

I respect that you were so polite about someone criticizing the music. I personally love the music in both versions, that said I think the reason that the music for the Amiga port might have come off lacking is because that version of the game was made after the Commodore 64 version, and the composer for the C64 Chris Huelsbeck (a very great composer) didn't return for the Amiga version. So, the job of transferring over his music was left with a different person. They did ok, I have definitely seen worse conversions of Huelbeck's music (looks to the versions of Turrican 2 where his music was ported over without his involvement.) All in all I still love the underground music in this version it's so epic.

It is hard. It requires skill. That said, after 30+ years of playing this game I can play it through blindfolded now. So I have set a challenge for myself to go through the game with one life. And after all those years of trying, I was on Stage 33 last year and can you imagine that I forgot how to do that stage? I was killed by that f...n lizard. I was devastated. So I'm still trying for that challenge of mine. Mind you I play on C64 emulator now. Back in the day I was playing on C64. But either way it's way harder than this Amiga version. To name a few differences: you can not jump into the fire barrel without dying, you can not fire through walls and floor tiles, time on the stages seems to be more tight there than here and Giana's hair is bigger as well, which makes jumping out of tight spaces much more difficult. So it is a tough game, but I always liked the challenge of it.

Ashley Williams to me, Amiga version looks and feels like an amateurish clone. The dynamics are somehow different. A lot of amateurish platforming games feel like that.

@@rafadydkiemmacha7543 I'm not sure if the phenomon has a name, but I think it's due to the common phenomenon where an increase in graphical horsepower makes something look worse. If you just naïvely scale up what works at low resolution, low colour space, small memory, low animation framerates etc you get something unbalanced and the glaring difference in quality really highlights the things you expect to see, but can't. The character sprites/models may look good, but the low quality animations now look jarringly awful. FMV from the mid 90's is notorious for this; they often used much higher poly models and offline rendering to make it, but the textures were terrible, and the animations were terrible and there was not any more real detail in character models as they just had more polygons added to smooth them out; looked worse than in-engine cut-scenes almost all the time. In 3D games like Half-life, going higher than about 800x600 makes glaringly obvious that walls are atomically flat, despite the depth and shadows painted into them, etc. and it makes things look worse.

soylentgreenb it makes sense. I would add the frames per second issue. Sometimes, retro games just feel better at lower FPS. That can be due to the fact that the movement is pretty linear. If that linear path gets smooth, it looks just artificial and wrong. But for Giana, also some colors are weird on Amiga (red shooting balls and diamonds?) and the movement of some objects seems to be different too (look how the shooting balls behave).

The graphics of this game are not great, given Amiga possibilities.

How is it possible to get shittier graphics and music with Amiga than Commodore64.

It’s an obvious ripoff of Super Mario Bros, but it’s a good one.

Mario Bros. just less pretty and worse art direction. Still liked this game.

Coming from the original C64 version, this seems subpar in just about every way except graphics, and even that's arguable. What a terrible port :S Especially the soundtrack, my lord it's a savagely butchered version of the original masterpiece. I can only hope the game play is good enough to warrant a play, because looking at this it seems like there is zero reason to play this over the original.

It doesn't matter if this is a good game, has good music or good graphics. The whole idea behind this project was to copy another already released piece of art. The purpose..... to cash in on the Mario craze, to creatively copy a copyrighted work. Despicable. And all you people bought it. We all know about money grubbing companies and their end game. What's your excuse?? The Giana sisters are nothing, were nothing, and will always be nothing more than one game companies' illegal attempt to be like the big N. Knowing its sorted history, why would anyone support it......on principal alone even? What's your excuse? I don't care...it's a cool game? Ok, so I don't care these shoes were made in a sweat shop, they are cool?! Exploitation is as exploitation does. Shame shame, know your name Giana fans.👎
