Hi Mark, just wanted to give you the heads up that I just got off the phone with American express and they informed me that there is going to be a significant increase to the supplementary card program for Platinum cards (currently $175 per person up to 3) which is going to be changed to $195 per card. Would call them up to confirm but apparently the change will be as of August 17th

Great video! For those who got a Platinum or Gold recently, I have received some offers for adding card members and getting extra MR points when they spend a certain amount (e.g., spend $2k in 6 months for 20k MR points), so it might be worth waiting adding others if you have flexibility. Also, the Morgan Stanley Platinum allows for one additional cardholder for free.

This is the video I needed! A week ago I applied and was approved for the Platinum card. In the sign up process I saw the two AU options and I was like "Wait you can get a Gold medal card for free?" Lol me being a AMEX newbie. I ordered the AU Platinum for my wife. My one complaint with AMEX is that they fall short in the AU envelope package explaining the AU Platinum benefits and credits features. By the way, My wife held her Platinum card in the air and said to me, "I'm gonna do the metal card drop test, Like Mark Reese" LOL

wish someone would do an equivalent for UK version. the main benefit for 2nd platinum card for me is being able to get the second cardholder into the Eurostar business lounge when taking the train to Belgium or France. especially when a 1st class ticket on its own does not get you into the lounge, and neither does a priority pass.

Hey Mark! Idk if someone else already mentioned this, but I think AUs can sort of use the Uber cash benefit indirectly if the primary account holder adds a family member to their Uber family account and sets the primary Platinum card as the Uber family payment method. I haven't tried this myself yet but it seems legit.

1. Yes, purchases made by any Additional Card Members on the Platinum Account will contribute to the $75K purchase requirement. 2. Yes, AU Platinum Cardholders can bring guests.

Question: are AU annual fees waived for active duty military? If so, does that cover only the 1st three AUs? What about a 4th user?

Hi Art - The regular Gold Card comes with the $10/mo. Uber credit. However, an authorized user Gold card does not have that benefit.

Should be both. On the business side, here's what the terms say for the GE credit on the Business Platinum Card: "Each Additional Card on eligible Card accounts is also eligible for one statement credit for an application fee for a five-year membership every 4 years for Global Entry or every 4.5 years for TSA PreCheck."

It’s my understanding starting February 2023 authorize users were no longer be able to access the centurion lounges. When I spoke with American Express that is what they informed me did I misunderstand?

Authorized users can still access the Centurion Lounges. The guest policy is what's changing on 2.01.2023. All guests will be $50 each, unless you spend $75,000/yr. on the Platinum Card account.

Not authorized users. But complementary guest unless you meet the minimum spend amount. Gold authorized users have no lounge access. Platinum authorized users can still enter but with no guest unless minimum spend amount is met.

Question Mark? Do you know if Amex business/corporate credit cards AU users sometimes have the same number as the primary holder on there cards But with there own name and not the primary? I was at a business dinner the other day and 3 people had the same AU credit card number but each had its own name. I had never seen that and wasn’t sure if Amex sometimes do that to business /corporate credit cards?

I have a gold with my husband as an AU he does all the grocery shopping. If I upgrade to the platinum sure he keep his current gold with the grocery store benefit or so I have to get him his own gold card?

Hi Rheannon - If you have a Gold Card w/ your husband added as a Gold AU, then yes, he's earning in the same way as the primary account (4X U.S. Supermarkets). If you upgrade your Gold Card to the Platinum Card, then his AU card will earn in the same way as the updated primary account (i.e. the Platinum Card, so grocery spend would be 1X on the primary and AU cards). If you want to upgrade and preserve the ability to earn 4X, he could get his own Gold Card 👍 (Or, you could apply for the Platinum Card yourself via new application & get a new welcome offer, too).

By adding someone as an AU, does that mean they wont be able to get the welcome bonus if they every decide to open their own account? Idk if the amex “once a lifetime” counts here”

As far as I know, the Gold Card AU on a Platinum account is only available in the standard gold color and it's plastic.

How come here in canada it's $175 for.each card. Cant spilt the 175 cst to 3 AU's.

I just spoke with an Amex rep. They confirmed that the secondary Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance extends to AU Platinum Cards. However, they could not cannot confirm a number of the others and said to ask the dedicated Insurance Team directly. They can be reached at 844.933.0648. My best guess is that the coverages will apply to AUs but that they won't get their own separate deductibles or limits (i.e., the terms often have limits per 'Covered Trip' for all passengers involved). That said, I recommend contacting the team mentioned above to confirm & get the details.

If you have a primary Gold account and a primary Platinum account, then yes, you can add the same AU to each account. If you're referring to adding the same AU twice to the same account & getting 2 AU cards (one Gold & one Platinum), I don't think that works.

Yes, but the other person's access is not based upon their being an authorized user. Rather, they would enter a lounge with you as your guest.

I’m an authorized user but the credit age, payment history, credit limit etc, doesn’t reflect in my credit report. Just says new Amex express account…why is this?

How long has it been? I think Amex is known to report less information than Visa / Mastercard (that is, I think Amex does not include age of account). I'm not totally sure about this though. Consider asking Amex directly to confirm.

Yes, your brother should be able to add you as an AU. He'll still need your name, SSN, and a few other things so Amex can confirm your identity. There should not be any credit pull for adding AUs.

Are the restrictions for children changing next year with centurion lounge access? Paying my AF of $695 and adding my wife as AU for $175, but still need to pay $30 for my four year old daughter to enter the lounge? Parents with children 3-12 are gonna be left out because only 2 and under are free, but under 13 can’t be an AU. Does anyone else hate this?

It should. Within 1-2 months that care should appear on your credit report. Yes, the additional card will have your name on it.

I added a platinum au card thru my platinum card and got 20k MR points when she spent 2k within 6 months. Today I received another offer for adding a gold au card thru my personal gold card and she’ll get 10k MR Points if she spends another 2k within 6 months. Im considering it.

The Business Platinum Card functions differently. As I write this, the fees for employee cards are: Business Platinum Employee Card: - $300 each (going up to $350 starting 6.01.2022) Business Gold Employee Card: - $45 each Business Green Employee Card - $0 each

I think you can add yourself as an AU, though I can't guarantee it. Ask Amex to confirm. Remember, AU Gold Cards on a Platinum account do not function like the regular Gold Card.

Are you referring to using a cash back portal, like Rakuten? If so, then yes, you'll still get the cash back (not the primary cardholder) as long as you log in & shop through your own Rakuten account.

Two questions. Can I make my family member, say my Sister an AU for Both the Plat and Gold card at the same time? Second Q. Does an AU on the Gold card get 4 points per $ on dining and Groceries like a normal Gold Card?

I got an answer for the second q already by reading some of the other comments below, the answer is that you do NOT get the 4x on either dining or groceries but ONLY get the 1 point per $ like on the Platinum card still not a bad deal all things considered

@@stevemccollum2011 - Correct. An AU Gold Card on a primary Platinum account gets the same rewards structure as the Platinum (no 4X categories). Not sure if you can add an AU twice to the same primary account. I'd ask Amex.

@@MarkReese Looking closer at this, it would make more sense to get my family member a AU on my Amex Gold so that I would get the 4x on Groceries and eating out. Easier to rack up the points for me lol

5X on Booking flight with gold for authorization user because my gold card currently give me 3x

@@Gurwinderparmar - The Gold Card on its own has never earned 5X on travel. Only an Authorized User Gold Card on an Amex Platinum account earns 5X on Flights & Prepaid Hotels.

My question is if you get the gold card AU. Will it performed like a gold card like 4x on Dining and grocery stores? Or would it act as of platinum card at 1x?

Hi Charlie - no. Gold Card AUs on a Platinum Card account earn in the same rewards categories as the Platinum Card. So, the AU Gold gets the 5X-5X-1X rewards structure.

I am wondering if I get a Amex pt or gold add on card for my wife would she be ineligible for future signup bonuses for those cards? Because Amex has a once in a life bonus policy. Wouldn’t want to deprive her of that bonus by getting just an add on card :)

No. Even if she's an authorized user, she can get her own welcome offer if she signs up on her own.

So I’m trying to add a gold card for myself. Let’s say I do the add members thing, do I not get the 3-4x points for restaurants and groceries? How about the benefits for places like shake shack? ($10 a month) that comes with the cold card? Also how should I go about getting these benefits while also keeping my platinum card benefits?

If you're adding a Gold Card AU to your Platinum account, then no, none of the 4X multipliers and none of the dining credits are available on the AU card. Instead, the Gold Card AU account will earn in the same way as the Platinum Card (5X / 1X categories). If you want the standard Gold Card benefits while also having your Platinum Card benefits, then you'll need to apply for the Gold Card via new application.

What about benefits like car rental protection and cell phone protection. Do those benefits extend to the authorized users?

It's my understanding that at least some do. I'd contact Amex directly to ask about the ones that you care most about. Unfortunately I don't have a straight answer to give on all the insurance converges.

The Platinum AU cards are metal. The Gold AU cards are plastic.

I added my wife as an authorized user for Amex platinum for the 20K MR point offer. Will Amex clawback the points if she closes her card within less than a year?

What happens if the authorized additional card gets unpaid, will ruin the additional card owner credit or the original??

The primary cardholder is responsible for any unpaid balances on AU cards.

@@Matttrinidad08 - In that case I'd spend more on the card to make up for it. Personally, I always spend beyond the requirement in case of returns, cancellations, miscounting, etc.

Yep. They can still get their own welcome offer even if they're an AU.

That sounds right. Gold Card AUs on a Platinum account are metal.

Amex authorized users might only see a score increase if the primary cardholder has a strong credit history. Unfortunately, Amex authorized user cards do not benefit from the age of the primary account, so that's a big disadvantage. However, other factors are still shared (like payment history), so that can help.

So basically no point giving an au a platinum card if the benefits are similar

The 'point' would be to grant them select benefits (e.g. lounge access) for a cost of $175 instead of $695, and you get to earn the points from anything they spend on the card.
