1000+ dollars to go dig and you get the nicer items you find confiscated? Why would that be worth going and doing? Do the dig owners compensate for whatever they confiscate from the person that found it? Otherwise why are prospective rockhounds basically paying to do work for the mine owner? I guess I'm not understanding the draw of this place after learning of this. I get it's the right of the mine owner to charge that for admission but they're getting risk free money by letting people go up to try and dig with them. 1000+ dollars is an exorbitant fee at the end of the day and not being able to keep anything of quality just seems wrong.

It’s simply because the owners would be better off to not open to the public, that is the case in most locations, including this one. It’s more productive for them to just dig it themselves and sell it off. Instead they have decided to do a public service, and open up and let people come in and have a chance at a once in a lifetime experience finding crystals. But being a business model, taking a risk that a person could leave with way more than they paid for isn’t balanced economically for themselves. For a person to be able to go to hallelujah junction and dig this way is a highly valuable experience plus you get to take home some finds, and have first option to purchase what you have found. I find that to be a great service for the public for $1000.

@@TheCrystalCollector paying 1000 dollars and working hard in the desert heat to experience finding something only to have it taken away from you sounds like a terrible experience. The way it is setup right now is definitely not a public service. Having to pay to buy something you find on top of the 1000 dollar dig fee further exacerbates this. It would be better for both parties if the mine owner buys the pieces for a compensation fee less than (say 40 to 50%) the retail value of the crystals. Or something like "trade in x crystals to keep the ones you want". That way both parties profit in some way in the end as the mine owner already has buyers ready for the pieces and the rockhounder isn't in the hole 1000 dollars after working their butt off in the dirt for the mine owner. Again the mine owner only profits in this case while anyone who pays to go gets an extremely short end of the stick. That comes off as immoral to be honest. Were you or anyone else who goes on these digs allowed to keep any of those ametrine crystals you found in the video? Especially the larger ones? My guess is no given what you've commented so far.

@@TheCrystalCollector and just to preface, I've watched a lot of your videos and love your content. This video actually gave me stars in my eyes to the point I started planning a trip out west to go to Petersen at some point until I learned more about the current digging situation. I still plan to make a few trips out west to some other sites but I don't think Petersen is going to be one of them sadly. Thank you for taking the time to reply by the way.

Yout reply supports the mine owner but it is still an explotation of the people paying a grand to do the work. The mine owner gets the money, therefore he is compensated for the liability risk.he is also getting the promotional perks your show provides. Taking the good finds is , imo, is opportunistic theft.

Great finds..all different colors up there...dug there for years before claims ensued. Used to dig at base of boulders down several feet. Harsh work but the big ones wash down hill over the millennia. The railway use to stop across from there on the west side of Hwy 395 for a stop and those more adventurous would try their luck. Years before Reno became Reno... Wow! Now pay & go! Worked on other side of hill looking down on hwy 395...worse road than that. I went a couple of weeks ago. Next time, I'll go there! Thanks except no tourmaline there...lol...if you're at the top that Mt use to be A LOT taller. I first went there 40 years ago, but on the west side of peak. Where you are at has been a commercial dig for at least 25 years..just about as long as I've been single.. .; ) ha ha ha thanks for this. Waited all week to see this from the tourmaline adventure. That made me Google Harvard museum...wow. My dream collection. Stay safe, my friend...Matrix too. Petunia says hi...see above pic

I was told by someone who knows something about quartz and other crystals that amethyst and citrine are quartz. When you go digging for them you find the characteristic 6 sided crystals with the 6 sided top just like clear quartz, 🌹 rose quartz, etc.

I've collected crystals for years but never dug any by my own hands. This is really inspiring me! I've gotta find out if there are any good sites in Texas open to the public.
