The amount of skill it took RB to not only conceive the joke, but also to write the lines, remember the lines, and deliver the lines written upside down. back to front and inside out. An absolute genius, the likes of which we will never see again.

indeed, but also consider he didnt actually need to remember ALL of the lines, only the general theme, the rest could be made up on the fly.

It’s a shame America didn’t get British comedy. Being an Aussie, we got so much of British tv. And growing up watching British comedy was hysterical and the old stuff is still funny after all these years.

The conception of this sketch is amazing. Guy has a complete round of complicated drinks to remember, and gradually forgets them as he gets drunk. That's gold. But then Ronnie Barker just aces it with his own genius performance. Gold^2.

One of the classic elements of comedy is subverting audience expectations, and the end of this sketch is a great example of this. Up to the last few seconds, the whole joke is about Ronnie B being unable to remember and order a round of drinks, as he gets more confused (and drunk) - but at the last minute, we find the silliest of his confused orders actually being treated like a normal one and the barman having exactly what he asks for to hand! Genius, and comedy gold.

I think the "one sack of coke" is a bit more innocent than anything modern. If I remember correctly Coke can also be considered like coal in some older English dialects.

I memorised one of his sketches for my drama exam at school many moons ago, specifically his Ministry Of Communications piece in which there's almost no single complete sentence. It probably took me a month to get it down; I would play it again and again on my cheap Walkman (now I'm really dating myself 😊). But it was worth it, because I passed with distinction. And I can do the sketch on command even now, because I still can't get it out of my head!

"Coke" in this is not cocaine, but it's funnier if it is. :D It's "a grey, hard, and porous coal-based fuel with a high carbon content and few impurities, made by heating coal or oil in the absence of air-a destructive distillation process."
