It is NEDERLAND *or* HOLLAND. If you put North- or South- in front of 'Holland' you get the provinces. Everybody says HOLLAND as well as NEDERLAND (The Netherlands) Same thing. There is an extensive amount of highways that go up to 16 lanes. Every family has at least one car. You bike mostly within cities not between 😅 B.t.w. Dutch infrastructure and highway-ingeneering is worldfamous for it's design and systems. There's a lot to find on internet.... 🎉

We are obligated to pay a insurance fee that’s about $160,- per month for basic insurance and that covers almost everything. You can insure yourself for various other things like dental care & physiotherapy. We also have a own risk fee that’s at the moment $400,- per annual year. No one in the Netherlands has to worry about doctors fee or hospital fees above your personal yearly own risk that you have to pay.

Use of car or bike is pretty depending of where you live. In larger cities bikes are way more practical and fast than cars. You often won't need a car, because of the good public transport system, and the bikes. However, when you live in smaller towns or villages, public transport is there but not as frequent. I live in a small town near the German border, and absolutely use a car. And for shorter trips or nice weather i take the bike.

Basic health insurance for everybody, if you work or not, is 137,50 euro's monthly. Most expensive is the top insurance 180 euro's and that includes everything you want to be insured for. Children under 18 years old are co-insured with the parents and don't pay for anything. You have the own risk on your insurance, it's 385 euro's a year and you can pay make a monthly payment instead of the full 385 euro's. Children under 18 years have 2000 euro's for braces and 18 and above have only 1000 euro's for braces. I pay 137,50 a month and once in a while when the insurance send you a bill for your own risk you pay it. Have a nice day and weekend.

But outside of those you have to pay for it yourself and have an own risk. There is more than just healthcare also, you also have your car insurance, insurance for your home, etc.. and there is an insurance from your work, so you are covered if something happens there. ✌️

Yes Netherlands has a lot of water, but it is not like you walk out the door and step in a canal. Most of our water is being flooded to the sea but the wetter areas are around the coast and where the major rivers pass trough like the Maas and the Rhine. More inland there is way less and even parts that would never get flooded if we have a major disaster.

  • @Busfles984
    @Busfles984 Жыл бұрын

In the 19th century, several canals were filled in, as towns lost their function as fortified towns, because of floods and for hygienic reasons and to create more space for road traffic. In the late 20th century and this century, some filled-in canals are being restored because they have largely lost their function as streets for cars. Some streets in the Netherlands have the words Gedempte X Gracht in their name. Having health insurance is required by law in the EU and EEA. Free Universal Healtcare is NEVER free for tourists. Tourists from outside the EU and EEA may be refused entry at the borders of EU and EER countries if they do not have health insurance and or too little money (cash or credit or debit card) with them.

For much of it's history most ships had their port in the province of Holland. Hence anywhere Dutch traders went, they would tell they came from Holland. As a result in many countries the word for the Netherlands is some form of Holland. In China it was olanda for instance. Many of the other parts of the country were either economically insignificant due to having been warzones, not being involved in trading as much or having been those half-pirates that wouldn't sign the peace treaty as privateering was so profitable. Zeeland turned out to have not signed the peace with Spain we found out in 1992 so was legally still at war and it's inhabitants might have plundered Spanish domains. Yeah,.. funny how one can forget such a thing. People often forget that nations in this period didn't exist yet. People were from a town or area, often owned by some aristocrat. Countries as we know today simply didn't exist yet. Passports didn't exist till the later part of the 19th century. Health insurance is not free, but really cheap compared to the US. You pay a low monthly fee of around 140 euro's per adult (kids will be included till age 18) and have an own risk per year of a whopping 380 Euro's. Additional insurance is available as well for dentistry. I pay a whopping 25 per month for that. The own risk is mainly to keep people from going to a doctor for every little ailment or blister. A Karen filter. Weed is not legal partly because of international pressure in .particular the say no to drugs mafia who profit from that being illegal. So we have laws to say it's illegal, but taking a medical perspective on it, made it "condoned". Drug use is legal, trade is illegal. The desire to legalise it is longstanding, but until recently it was impossible and changing standing laws can be difficult. Other nations now have more progressive legislation as the Netherlands. Being a frontrunner at first, getting caught up and surpassed. The same was applied on prostitution. As it wasn't physically harmful by medical standards if health standards were met and there clearly was a longstanding proven demand for it, it was condoned. The nice thing about legalising things is that you can then demand and apply requirements to them apart from getting taxes and taking funds from criminals and thus lessening corruption. Personally I would legalise other fairly safe drugs as well for those reasons. Fighting it only feeds corruption and criminality while you cannot control the safe use. We have open discussions on the topic and even TV shows about how to use and what the effects are, but legalising it is very hard under international law and sanctions that might apply. Fun fact MDMA was legal till 1994. At that time it was mainly amateurs that would make it for the fun of it and spread it freely or very little cost. It wasn't a big issue. Only after it became illegal it became an industry. Pretty much the same as what happened in 1930's US with the prohibition. Moonshiners ended up running Chicago. Dirty money ends up in real estate where all the top crooks are so illicit profits can be whitewashed in house price increases.

Everybody in the Netherlands has healthcare insurance, even the homeless have it. It costs about 160 Euro per month at a minimum and covers most of your healthcare costs, but if you use healthcare services the first 385 euro each year you have to pay yourself, with the exception of consultations at your general practitioner / family doctor.

your description of the laws surrounding weed are pretty good. its essentially tolerated and decriminalized at the lower level. the USE of any drugs in the Netherlands is not illegal, it has to do with basically the Dutch equivalent of the constitution, which states a citizen owns their own body and is allowed to do with it as they please. because of this law, they can not directly make the usage of anything illegal. they can only make other laws, such as banning the ownership of things, the transportation of things, the trading of things. i think it is for this reason too that we have legalized prostitution. because the government can not directly tell anyone, "you are not allowed to sell your body" so they regulate things surrounding it instead. and then instead of focusing on making that business harder or impossible to practice, they focused on making it safer and regulated, many people do not know that prostitutes here actually have minimum wage laws, and health insurance from their employer. and in this case with weed. the growing, transportation, and selling of it is still illegal. but it is decriminalized at the lower level. you are allowed to have 5 grams on you and then the law will basically pretend you don't have anything at all. its tolerated to a certain point. the coffeeshop for its part, is allowed to sell you 5 grams maximum per visit. but you are basically correct, the coffeeshop still has to basically buy its weed illegally because obviously they are buying allot more then 5 grams, and therefore are transporting more then 5 grams, and someone is growing allot more plants then the 5, you are allowed to have for personal use. its always seen as a very liberal law. but its really not, medicinal stores in California don't have to buy their weed illegally, and their growers don't have to grow it illegally either. in many ways the laws in some US states, far surpass the ones here. some interesting lawsuits have come out of these laws though, including one of an elderly couple that had been growing and supplying for coffeeshops for years, being raided and then had to appear in court. but then these people whipped out all manner of paper work they kept over the years, and even provided proof they had paid income taxes for everything they ever grew, and so they argued that because they only sold to coffeeshops, and paid income taxes, the government enabled them ,and profited off of them. the court agreed with them, so they won their case and were never convicted :p

About health insurance, everyone over 18 pays a monthly fee for your health insurance with companies like for example Menzis or VGZ or some other company. It depends on what kind of policy you want or need what you pay for it. There is a basic insurance which covers most common things which is about €150 and this years 'eigen risico' is €385, collected by the insurance company. When you use prescribed medication you pay for it via the 'eigen risico', some small medical and dental work is also paid via 'eigen risico'. Surgeries and hospital stay cost you no money as that is paid by your insurance company. People with a small salary or who are on benefits can get a part of the monthly insurance money back via 'zorg toeslag' that also applies to renting a home or apartment with 'huur toeslag'. That money is paid out via the tax authorities. Kids till 18 are insured via one of the parents as is in the States. Near the end of the year the Government decides what amount the 'eigen risico' is.

Holland or The Netherlands, people cannot even agree on that here. Whenever there is a soccer match with the national team, everyone is chanting "Holland, Holland", while at the same time correcting others when they call it Holland... Another fun fact on prostitution: In some rare cases you can actually get coverage by your health insurance to visit the prostitutes

Health insurance does cost you. However, little known fact is that health insurance is compulsory and the fine for it is about the same as it costs to have health insurance. The only way I know you can get free health insurance is to be unemployed and homeless, but that's a whole lifestyle change that isn't worth the free health insurance. As far as I know, there's no difference in health insurance cost for permanent or temporary residents (as I think that would be illegal, based on article 1 of the constitution, which deals with discrimination. Everyone present in the Netherlands is to be treated equally in equal situations)

Inthe Netherlands it is legal to buy weed at a coffeeshop but max 5 grams a person who is 18+ years old. But if a policeofficer finds it on you they are allowed to take it from you. Also you cant carry more than 5 grams. Healthcare also isnt free, but the law says you need healthinsurance. But you have options and the government gives you most of the money you need for the insurance.

About the health care its sort of free we have a system If you have citezen ship you can get a (Zorg toeslag) from the goverment "Sum of mony to compermise monthly expenses to your health insurance". Every one needs to have one its around 120-300 euro depends what insurance you get, and for example i pay 152 and get 154 euro zorg toeslag (Monthly) what you get from the goverment depends on your income the more you earn the less you get. You also have some thing called Eigen risico (Own risk) this is the amount you have to pay before its free, around 385 min to 900 max depends on what insuarnce you get. So if you breake a leg like i did it costs 5k BUT I just pay 385 and the rest is for the incurance. So its kinda free i dont see how just paying 385 (You can pay in parts) is not basicly free. And it resets yearly so when you pay your own risk you can break as many bones as you desire and it gets payed for you

I work in a coffeeshop (not in Amsterdam) and it is definitely not mainly tourists that buy. Here in the shop 85% is Dutch or lives in the Netherlands. Yes, in Amsterdam city center it's tourist based, but if you go beyond that to other districts of Amsterdam, you'll notice the locals. If you look up Covid lock-down The Netherlands coffeeshop, you'll see how many people depend on soft drugs. The lines to the shop to last minute buy were endless.

The thing about the growth in cars is misleading because ofcourse more housholds have a car then 50 years ago. I can believe that but what makes the Netherlands a bike country is that beside the car we use a lot of bikes. In America if you own a car you will use it all the time(if it's correct what I have heard) in the Netherlands there are times that the car stays on the same place for multiple days or even weeks because we like our bikes. So the fact that the amount of households with a car is increased doesn't say much about our bike culture.

One bike, one daily car and two classics. I mostly drive, because of health issues, but i regularly go to the convinience store by bike. It's only half a mile away. I pay €125 monthly for my health insurance. In 2019 I gave birth in the hospital (not usual here) and bills racked up to around €7500, but I only had to pay €70 for lab tests. For some weird reason that's not covered, lol. Besides that, I get 2 shots of B12 a week from my GP's office (free), I'm on birth control (free), vitamine D (free) and have used other medications on and off over the years, most of them for free. So, health care is definitely not free here, but MOST of the time, it's pretty cheap.

From video's like this I get that there are some Dutch people that get sort of upset if foreigners say 'Holland' to the Netherlands but Holland isn't the same as the provinces North- and South-Holland, that's why those words are added. In a way both names mean the same and come from long ago when it was called (together with a part of Belgium) 'the low countries'. Under sea-level.

It is LEGAL to buy weed in the coffeeshop. The shop pay taxes and the customers. You can't buy and have more than 5 grams with you. Drugs and Amsterdam....it's mostly about tourists :) There was a tolerance policy for 15 years, but it is FULLY legalized 8 years ago. So the gentlemen is wrong. You can have plants, it is about buying and selling. The limit is 5 grams, not 8. Canals...owh yes we do have a lot. Rotterdam is NOT a new city but very old (she is wrong). It was for the most part bombed and rebuilded. Haarlem, Den Haag, Delft...all big and old cities in Holland (coast) have lots of canals. When you live in the city you don;t need a car. But many Dutch people travel at least 30 miles to their work. Many go with public transport and bike, but ofcourse we have good highways and cars. You are right about the splitting up. Now they want to merge north Holland with Utrecht and the Flevopolder (land made in ijsselmeer) Weird politicians Yes prostitution is legal in the Netherlands. Before 10 years ago it was allowed. I am very happy for them. They do not need pimps, don't go with men and are not on the streets, they are their own boss, they pay taxes and have good healthcare. Proud to be Dutch. Prostitution will always be there....rather our system than the "skidrow" system. Healthcare is not free, but it is a low amount you pay. If you can't affort it, government will pay. We pay 140 euro's a month and with that everything is covered, except dentist, fysio etc. Taxes help people who are older (with pension) or live from minimum wage) These people are nice but are not really aware of the facts. Prostitution, abortion, soft drugs and euthanesia are LEGAL by law. Thank God.

The Holland/Nederland relationship is much like England/United Kingdom: the first is part of the second, and strictly speaking they're not the same, but still the part is used to indicate the whole. It's not just a misconception of foreigners, natives do the same thing: in expressions, songs: 'Hart van Holland', "Ik hou van Holland, landje aan de Zuiderzee". Cars: I never owned one (nor had a driver's license) until in my 50's. And have again been without one for more than a decade. Pot and all that: I never smoked even tobacco, but buy for my wife. The 'koffieshops' are part of a toleration system, but the rules can be arbitrary, and vary from city to city, like opening hours and somewhat funny: one of the shops had a system where for each gram or so you would get a sticker on a card, and a full card would give you some free pot. Much like several 'normal' stores would. Call it 'frequent flyers'. Until it was forbidden by a new rule. Maybe they thought saving stickers is addictive?

Healthcare is never free. It is either payed by taxes you payed or an obligatory insurance. The idea that it is a set amount and you do not pay extra when visiting a doctor gives you the feeling it is free. Anyhow, it beats the US system hands down.

Charlie, here is a fun fact about the clogs you showed. You thought the three crosses represented Amsterdam, but I'm afraid not.. I should know, I've been wearing clogs all my life and I still do. What you have are the standard pattern laquered ones. Back in the day they were the cheaper option footwear and the pattern is meant to resemble "real" shoes, with two "flaps" tied togetket with shoelaces. Once you see it it's very obvious. I have the same use them around the house, easy slip in when you need to step out, warm and comfy in the winter.
