Still didn't see the comparison video. Have you even had your bill (or better, did the insurance company receive the bill)? Your part of it will max be the "eigen bijdrage" of 385 Euro/year and all medical costs (except some exceptions) will be free for the rest of the year. Good to see that Charlie found your channel.

I don't want to think about having to check whether I have enough money before I call 911. Health care is not a privilege, but a human right! American health care reminds me of the movie Total Recall where people had to pay for clean oxygen....no money no breathing. The U.S.A. is a frightening country 🙁

Keep in mind that many countries that people are ranting about of having "free healthcare", actually dont have "free healthcare"... In the Netherlands for example you are obligated by law to pay for health insurance. It's not free.

I am in the Netherlands, and my health insurance is good all over the world. when traveling to the US we always buy extra health insurance due to the insane costs. I love to be able to keep my house.

Thats not true, you always need a extra travel health insurance, to update your basic insurance. If you travel a lot you can choose a perma update, but always cost more.

That same additional insurance also covers dental care after an accident and repatriation. If you can afford a trip outside of Europe, I don’t think €27,- to be covered for a whole year is something anyone will worry about.

No surprises here as this is the normal in most Countries, NZ, Australia, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, etc etc. No one would hesitate to call an Ambulance in Canada or worry about fees, invoices, or bills to pay later. Most Countries DO NOT use healthcare as a "for profit" and "dividends to shareholders" system. Police Fire and Medical are equally universal services provided and regulated by Government FOR THE PEOPLE. Human rights are much more important everywhere, Except the USA.

My dad was an ambulance paramedic and once in a while he'd take me as a kid to a toy store where I would choose stuffed animals for him. He'd put these in a big coulorful sack that he stored in the back of the ambulance. Whenever he had a call to a road traffic accident where there were kids involved he'd comforted the children by giving them one or more stuffed dolls. Usually they stopped crying quikly after they got the toys. He'd paid it from his own pocket. Nowadays every Dutch emergency vehicle has stuffed animals, like teddy bears, koala bears, rabbits, cats, you name it in the back. It's taxmoney well spent.

Paracetamol doesn't thin the blood they use Aspirin for this (Acetyl-Salycilic Acid).

Two of my favorite "expat" channels. Both Eric and Tammy, and Tracey and Travis are such nice and warm people. That said, another expat you might want to check out someday is "Dutch Americano" which is run by Ava, an American girl living in Utrecht.

I know what they are talking about, because I had a hart attack too last year. THe pain, the paramedics, yhe nytroglycerin and all the other things are so familiar. But the main thing is: I am still here, so I can watch their channel! And yours too, Charlie! I also ended up with a stent in my hart and I'm doing fine now. Hahaha, hospital bills in the Netherlands? What bills, never seen one! Iy's called insurance.

My little brother had the pleurisy 20 years ago. He got it on holiday in Spain. They said there he had a cold. He went home early because he wasn't feeling well. When he got home I heard him coughing in the night so I went to check on him. I immediately saw that it was not good and called the doctor. She was there within 10 minutes, in the middle of the night. The doctor was also shocked when she saw him and called an ambulance. They were also there within 10 minutes. He was examined in the hospital where it turned out that he had a neglected pleurisy. His lungs were aspirated from his back. In the end, he spent 30 days in the hospital on the verge of death. He is fully recovered. The costs for all together, doctor, ambulance, 30 days hospital were 0 euros. Everything was covered by insurance. Of course you pay your premium every month, at the time less than 100 euros a month, but then you don't have to worry if something happens. Greetings from the Netherlands. We're still waiting when you're coming, you seem like a nice guy.

We can actually get coverage for the US as well if we're traveling there, but it comes in the form of an additional health insurance (and thus with additional cost) to make up for the US's astronomical health prices.

Dutch health insurance has a worldwide cover. BUT only pays the price that the treatment or medication would have cost in the Netherlands. Therefore you need an additional insurance or travel insurance if you go abroad.

@@Phiyedough not true, insurance can be very cheap if your register your car the right way. some people even register their luxury car in another country like germany so they don't have to pay as much road taxes and insurance.

That is indeed the Netherlands. We Dutch people complain that we have to pay a lot per month. For example, I pay about 120 euros per month for all fixed costs. But on the other hand, hospital expenses are free. You don't pay any costs if you need an operation or anything else, it's free. I sometimes hear that people in America die because they simply can't afford it. Fortunately, this is not the case in the Netherlands.

If you call an ambulance in Belgium and you say the word 'hart attack', they immediately send 2 cars, 1 ambulance and 1 car from the MUG or Mobiele Urgentie Groep (Mobile Urgency Group) That MUG team consists of at least a specialist doctor and a nurse who holds a special title in intensive care and urgent medical assistance. Belgium also has 2 Emergency Medical Groups per Helicopter or MUGH.

Throughout Europe the emergency number is 112, here they ask which emergency service you need. You can call the emergency number for the police, fire brigade and ambulance. In the Netherlands, these 3 disciplines are located in 1 control room and work closely together to get the best and fastest help on site as quickly as possible.

On the title of ambulance personel they did go by the Name Ambulance Broeders ( Ambulance brothers a kind of reference to the old names used in the middle ages broeders and zusters Brothers and Sister . of the religiious orders that ran the hospitals back in the day ) But Dutch ambulance personel have tons of education , Ambulances in the Netherlands are staffed by an ambulance driver and an ambulance nurse. The nurse has followed various specialization training courses outside of regular training in the hospital and worked in hospital departments such as Intensive Care (general and/or cardiology), anesthesia or an emergency care department. All ambulance nurses in the Netherlands must be in possession of a diploma for ambulance nurse obtained at an institution accredited by the Care Training College (CZO). In 2016, the Academy of Ambulance Care (formerly the Stichting Owners Training Ambulance Assistants) is the only institution in the Netherlands accredited for this training. The ambulance drivers have also followed a training accredited by the CZO at the Academy of Ambulance Care. This training is focused on driving skills and technology and medically assisting actions. [3] The ambulance work with national protocols (LPA), which stipulates which (be) actions can be applied to which diagnosis. [4] In the United States, for example, they also work with protocols, but a doctor must be consulted in the hospital before a medicine may be administered or perform an action. In the Netherlands, employees may carry out the protocol without consultation or with good reason to deviate without consulting a doctor. By means of the BIG Act, the government laid down that ambulance nurses in urgent circumstances are authorized to perform medical acts that are normally reserved for a doctor. An ambulance nurse is not a 'half doctor' but a nurse with specialized knowledge and authority in the field of acute necessary medical care. Ambulance personnel are regularly trained. 15:30 I am an ambulance driver here in the Netherlands and I am glad people here know what to do when ambulance police or fire brigade approaches with all the bells and whistles on. it saves so many lives when you just make room for first responders

Good to see this couple was helped on time by our Dutch paramedics. The ambulance has a time-frame of 15min. 20min. max to reach the victim. But they not always get there in time because of traffic etc.

Fyi, ambulances, police & firetrucks, here in The Netherlands when they put on their flashing lights & siren, have absolute priority on our roads. All other vehicules do have to yield and make way for them. If you don't and/or obstruct

I know exactly what he’s talking about. I had the same experience and I survived; it’s been 11 years ago now. I’m very thankful for Dutch healthcare services. I’m on two pills now. Blood thinner and cholesterol; the rest is ok. He’s only going to pay for his monthly healthcare insurance and his own risk of €385

385€ is only for te frist time in a year. If de cost gats higher in that year jou don t pay more. This is maximum.

If one calls 1-1-2 in the Netherlands, they will ask whether the firebrigade, ambulance, or police will be needed. Then they will dispatch the call to whatever service or services needed.

They didn't go through to his heart straight away, they use a really small scope that they use to travel through large veins. Access is usually through your arm or groin. That way they can access pretty much every large artiry. And put in a stent as well to keep the vein opened up after the procedure.

Angiograms are done through arteries or arterioles, and stents are put in arteries. I am glad you’re not a cardiologist by trade, you’d have a lot in common with Harold Shipman.

I had the same.. Heartproblems, huisartsenpost, ambulance. What i mis in this video is the very detailled result from the ambulance on paper. I got a decent roll of paper with all statistics.

In the Netherlands we have the ‘Arbo wet ‘. It is a working condition law. When you live in an appartement without an elevator and you have to go in a ambulance the medicals are not allowed to carry you downstairs because that would or could be to heavy. So then the fire brigade comes and they will take you down through the window to the ambulance in a steel tub-shaped stretcher. It is called afhijsen. It happens around 10 times a day in Amsterdam.

Our Ambulance staff is NOT EMT, but we are registrered and specialized nurses and have 8 years of education. We do make diagnosis and start treatment in the ambulance. That is the main difference with the USA, where they can't diagnoze or start treatment. It's the pick-up and go methode (USA) He had no heartsurgery, but they made a small incision in his wrist (numbed) and put in a very small catheter in it with a stent in it (folded) they watch the x rays with contrast and see when they are at the spot where the artery is closed off and unfold the stent to open it up again. It's an 1 cm incision and it's awesome how fast they can do that. Rottterdam Zuid, Maasstad ziekenhuis is in an area where most people are not Dutch (sorry, but it's true, I have lived there and it's a maroccon society) and they don't care about ambulances. This is very different in the rest of Holland, where we do not have these problems. People wait, all go to the side. So this is not a typical Dutch thing and I hate it.

It's true. For the US you normally need extra travel insurance for medical cost. Our insurance pays usually up to 2 times of Dutch rates but the US is 3 times or more.

I believe that you can actually get fined for not making room for emergency services here... Also, the bills are at max €385 (probably, if they did not raise their "own risk"), if they did not have any healthcare services that year yet. Any prescribed medication or earlier hospital visits might make it cheaper. But besides your monthly health insurance (about €150/month), that is the maximum you will pay for any necessary healthcare service each year, when making use of healthcare services (dentists and psychologists not included btw). Kids under 18 are insured for practically everything for free too, if they're signed on with their parents' plan.

In my country every ambulance has special chair for stars with 3 wheels (they spin when going down the stairs) on each size (instead of 1) so it's not a problem at all.

Similar in Australia. 000 emergency will ask you if you need fire dept, police or ambulance.

If you have a compulsory health Insurance in the Netherlands , you don t have to worry about the costs. After surgery I never received a bill at home, this bill was directly reimbursed by my health insurance company to the hospital. You don’t have to worry about the costs of the operation and further treatments, etc here.

Netherlands healthcare is, amazing. My wife needs prosthetic bones replaced in her ears as no sound gets to her eardrums. Cost will be 385 Euro I've had a break in the arm close to my shoulder. Constant ordered me a bone density scan. I've not been charged yet. I get 12 sessions of physio on my insurance. Brilliant. My wife was involved in an accident 4 broke ribs and collapsed lung. Operated on within the hour. All I can say is, amazing people and care here.

I totally agree with people not getting out of the way of emergency services.

I wanna correct the statement of them. Americans pay more for insurance in the netherlands. And dutch people ARE insured even in America if you have the right insurance. Personally got one of the most expensive once costing me 300€ per month (gov pays me 112€ for it to so 188€ technically which is basic for dutch people) and im insured no matter where i am or what happens to me.

my parents had 5 children in the uk in the north of the uk, in the 70 and 80s.... it was very poor then... tbh it still is... neither had a job but where cared for by the state and any care needed was given to us... now us kids are older we all have jobs so gave back to help others.... its weird how america doesnt give help when needed?

People do, the states don't... That's the issue in the US: Beautiful people, highly damaged political system.

They only have to pay the "own risk" in the insurance of 385 euro's, for that money everything is covered, even when it would have been a hearttransplant, no matter what happens to you, it never costs more than 385 euro's, except some medication that is not covered, but than it is always just a few euro's. Thumbs up!

Sounds like they did the procedure we call dotteren in the Netherlands.

The problem with emergency vehicles is that you do hear them, but some times don't know from which direction they come from. It sometimes takes a while until you see the flashing lights.

Don't bother about direction. Soon as you hear an emergency vehicle, slow down and move to the side. If it turns out to be the other direction, you've still done your part to save someone's life. That's all you need to do.

Charlie, a couple of years ago I fell with my bike and broke my tie bone. I will make it short, I was picked up by an ambulance, got a pain relief, X rays, operation to put in some titanium and woke up in an hospital bed. No question asked if I could effort it as we all are insured. After a week I was released. And that costed me less than 1000 Euro OOP. And that is what we consider NORMAL. So the USA is NOT the rule, but the exception.

A lot of Americans don't like the idea of social health care because they think it makes the whole country socialist. We have the same thing in the UK. An ambulance is viewed as one of the emergency services in the same way as police or fire brigade. You shouldn't have to make the decision to either go into debt or live. The first priority of any government is the welfare of the people who are paying their wages.

It's mandatory to have a health insurance in the Netherlands, you do have your own risk which is 385euro this year I believe. I think it's insane what the costs of healthcare is in the US

Several years ago my daughter was quoted USD 300 (pay up front) to have wax rinsed out of her ear in USA. I wonder what they charge now ? She waited till she was back in Australia and got it done for nothing (insurance). The normal fee at that time would have been AUD 30.

Yeah, about the ambulance. It's not free in the Netherlands. I will use up your excess deductible (eigen risico). Which in my case was 535 euro's. (Per year) But the second time, the same year, it is fully covered by the insurance.

Crazy crossover episode

I found it a bit hard to follow what they were saying when they were both talking at once. I have wondered in USA if the urban sprawl has an effect on emergency response times. If you live 40 minutes drive from the city centre it will take the paramedics a while to reach you, even when breaking the speed limit. In Europe the cities are less spread out, so people in the suburbs are still not too far from the centre.

Hey Charley, this sounds like a angiogram. The arteries and veins don't have pain receptors. I've had this procedure myself without sedation.

insurance doesnt cover the US because we know its a rip-off. you need extra travel insurance* to get covered there *conditions apply

the reason why we are not covered in the US is indeed because everyting is too expensive. we can have a over sea Travel insurance but it will still not cover everything. it even can be that when we have to go to the hospital in the US that we still can get a bill in thenetheralnds of a couple of thousands euros (depends on what you had ofc). But yes it got all to do with the price.

I’m dutch but did lots of jobs in the US. Had some problems with my knee when working in Fort Lauderdale. 600 dollars just to get it looked at. Nothing wrong👍 And it took about 5 hours; the onely thing that was impotant was; is his dutch insurance going to cover this🤬🤬🤬🤬

US healthcare is very arbitrary in price, hence no insurance wants to cover the highly fluctuating cost. Think of the cost incurred in holding your own baby after birth some hospital charged $500 for. That would be considered outrageous and lead to claims of psychologic torture of patients. It's considered a profiteering racket.

Yeah I had a ambulance ride the other year and they have those electrodes on you in no time. The hospital is very close so i had a very smooth short ride. When you see people in the U.S it's like it takes them so long before an ambulance shows up and before anyone is in the hospital, that will kill many people I'm sure. My issue was extreme anemia so I didn't have to worry about much and it was a bit of an adventure, the ride in a bed, being pushed around the hospital in a wheelchair with the nurse telling people how low my HB was. Being pushed around in a bed is also the best ride, like if you are super wealthy forget the benz, get some hospital flooring and a bed and have yourself pushed around like that, haha

@@IWontBuy-RP Yeah as an adult you just don't get to be moved at any time. I found being driven onto a bed into surgery was a bit sci fi because the prep/recover room is very bright and white and you are looking up at all the lights as you are moved. You gotta enjoy the small things in life. haha

Your voice is soothing! That's sad the fact that if you think you are in danger you are scared to call for help in America. The American health "care" system is a mess period, like it's the richest country in the world of the entirety of the human history and it can't afford healthcare for their people... ain't that messed up? Ain't it like 35,000 dollars for having a child flat in the US? My Grandfather was an ambulance driver during the troubles in Northern Ireland, he was ambushed by the IRA and shot while trying to save peoples lives.

European based viewer here. No matter where I travel to, I always take out extra travel insurance that includes medical. Wherever I’ve lived, I’ve always had the most comprehensive health insurance possible. One of the reasons I chose for this is that it’s worth the cost. I think living in the US would severely stress me out because of the cost of healthcare. In Europe, it’s affordable to be insured up to the gills and I don’t need to hesitate for even a fraction of a second to get myself or my daughter checked out. As I’m in my fifties now I need to be more careful. It feels surreal to me to potentially risk my life by not contacting my GP, not going to the ER, or not calling an ambulance because it might ruin me financially. Not only is medical care affordable, it’s good and it’s comparatively fast. Edit: the cost of year round full medical coverage for the US can be prohibitive for a EU resident. It’s however entirely possible and quite affordable to take out insurance for a single trip.

In Belgium when u call 112 for an ambulance , it costs 67.53( check on net)...but insurance pay a part...for 1 km or 100km...

im english and id honestly expect if i where ill in europe id be taken care of... but also id a european was ill in the uk they would get the same care.... the uk may be out of europe , but its all very similar values of healthcare...

if there is any American doctor or admin here tell me what it cost for my wife to be in hospital for 6 months fighting leukaemia with 12 months of aftercare free transport to hospital for the whole time,, I paid 9% of my income as did my wife so we all had coverage for healthcare, a small price to pay, sadly my wife didn't make it, but all I had to pay for was coffee or tea

Though our system is one of the best worldwide, being sick and in need of treatment is not free at charge. I have my own risk and I lose that Januari 1st each year. Being unable to work means Iam just over social welvare. Having a basic insurange is not suficiant at all, you need an extra insurance. Still not all medicine are free at cost. You see what I mean. Iam not complaing I've got a roof above my head and enough to eat and dress propperly. Above all that they keep me alive. Whitout treatment I wouldn't make two more months, if I had lived in the states I would have been eaten by the worms by now.

I love your channel, because you're genuine, but I can't with that channel you're reacting to. They epitomize why there's growing resentment to US expats; they imported their racism from the US, they make NO effort to assimilate, and essentially make advertisements for abusing the Dutch system without contributing to it. Understand: I want you to move here. You'd be an asset. But we have a severe housing crisis, and the +/- 8000 expats moving here every year on very favourable tax breaks, are prizing locals out of affordable housing, paying up to or over 2000/month for houses that by rights should be social housing for around 650. Meanwhile, 11k refugess are a 'problem' according to the gov't... See how that grates?
