Germans are legally obligated to form a rescue alley on the Autobahn whenever traffic slows, just in case. Recovery trucks only have orange lights and aren't allowed to speed or run red lights, but they can use the rescue alley I think. The sooner they clear the lanes ahead, the sooner we all can get moving again.

For information in Germany: If you are the first car in the queue at a traffic light in an urban area and an ambulance or police or fire department or anything else with a siren comes from behind, then drive slowly and carefully into the intersection with hazard warning lights and paying attention to other traffic, even if the light is red and if you have no room to avoid it, cross the road in a straight line or in the direction in which you wanted to drive, even if there is a red light camera, because the emergency services are also flashed by the camera and if this is not the case you can object as soon as the letter arrives. The rescue coordination center will then check whether a vehicle was on the road at the time. No penalty is imposed for running the red light and the case is closed. Saving lives has never been punishable, no matter what.

The coolest thing I saw was when in the 90's I was standing on a packed oxford street, London when an ambulance tried to pass. There was nowhere for the cars to go but the sidewalks which were packed with people. Simultaneously, the cars pulled up onto the sidewalk and the people on the sidewalks jumped into the shops to make room. It was beautiful!

I think in a lot of European countries, by law you have to make way for emergency services, not just ambulances, but other services like the police and fire services. For developing countries, especially the ones with high population density, it's more understandable that there can be a mess at time, but for a modern country like the US that has so many road lanes, there are no excuses, seriously, if the Europeans can do it with much smaller roads, there are no reasons why the US can't, and all I can think is that it's a combination of laws in place and the people, in Europe and pretty much every other modern country beside the US, there are strict laws when it comes to traffic and emergency services, but I also feel there a social dimension to it, where many people care about other peoples well-being, whereas in the US, you get a sense that people are out for themselves and don't care about others, basically, the individual over the community, probably why the US has such a poor record on this, even thought, they should be doing better than most modern countries with how wide there roads are. At the end of the day, if European countries can do it with their population density, then pretty much any country can with small regulations and consideration from the people.

To be fair, I feel like you are making excuses for the NYC videos. The people in manhattan aren’t really making an effort. When they start driving, don’t drive straight forward, but go to the side where the space is created with the moving cars. They are just not willing to give up their place. Even when it’s gridlocked, if everybody moved to the side the could create an extra lane.

Did you even watch the video? In downtown Manhattan there is literally no wheres to go, cars are packed like sardines on the road, especially with box trucks and buses in your way. This is only a issue in the big cities, in other parts of the US there is room to move over.

@@thefancydoge8668 Yes, I saw it and I say if you don't see the place you are blind, look closely at the buses and cars (taxi) on both sides, a good meter of space, that means lead the bus and cars a little more to the right and left, get in order and you've got it 4. Track clear in particular nothing happens before the crossing and even after the crossing only one person really does anything .

@@thefancydoge8668 I'm afraid you don't get the principle. If EVERYONE knows, not suspects, but KNOWS that they HAVE to get out of the way, they will move. The leftmost lane moves over as far to the left as possible, every other lane moves as far right as possible and shuffles as close to each other as possible. That opens up a LOT of space on all roads, not only multi lanes, enough for even semi trucks to get through.

@RustyDust101 that is a problem, people know to get out of the way but knowing nyc drivers they don't want to allow yhe people that actually want to get out of the way, since they are afraid and dumb thinking they are going to lose their spot. Big cities are always the worse in these types of situations. Sometimes there is no room thanks to people like that or tight rosds where getting on the curb is the only option.

According to stuff I've read over the years, there's a rule that's taught to every German (and other european) driver before they get their lisence that goes something like "if the are more cars around you than normal or if the congestion gets too bad, IMMEDIATELY try to make a space/lane wide enough for an emergency vehicle, even if there isn't a siren going off". It's just future-proofing taught to every would-be driver that everyone should learn. Granted, some countries don't have the space necessary for that (from the look of the background, the German example is on the Autobahn) but the more built-up cities had some space to work with to make a tight corridor.

It is not a rule, it is a law and you get a high fee if you don't do it. :) In Europe we are obligated to form a emergency lane if traffics slows down or stops. Everytime i drive to a red light i drive as far right/left as i can so if a emergency vehicle comes from behind it has space to pass.

The problem of large cities in the USA is the lack of public transport (city buses). In Europe, in large cities there are so-called bus lanes where only buses and emergency vehicles can normally travel . There are never traffic jams on these road lanes and this allows for quick passage for, for example, an ambulance. There are emergency lanes on highways that can be used for this purpose
