The first time I heard the next line "Her name is Incontenitia...", with all the swishing lisp Michael Palin delivered, I almost had to change my shorts. I suppose after getting honed out by Biggus Dickus, it would make any "wife" incontinent.

Those are some of the all time funniest scenes in a movie, along with all the quotable lines of dialogue within them. Every once in a while, I slip a “he has a wife, you know…” into a conversation with friends and/or family members who are also fans of Monty Python movies. The same goes for The Holy Grail. When I was a kid, it was the first movie I saw on a laser disc player. One of my parents’ friends had one, and he lived a few houses up the street. We would do a movie night at his home, and he rented them from a video rental place called Errols. The laser disc was the size of a 33 rpm record, contained in a hard plastic jacket. Sony started making beta max tape players soon after the laser disc technology was being used, and eventually VHS became the medium for new movie rentals (and probably porn, as well). One of the other movies we really enjoyed was Time Bandits, and it’s still a favorite of mine.

I first saw the film in Perth, Western Australia upon its release. The US 7th Fleet was visiting at the time so the cinema was over a quarter full of young sailors and marines just when Monty Python was starting to be appreciated in the USA. It was amazing, every seat was taken and everyone was roaring their heads off with laughter. By the end of the show my ribs hurt and I wouldn't have been the only one.

My dad brought us up to love British comedy here in Australia from the 60’s onwards. He used to listen to The Goon Show in the car with us as little kids. When I got older he and I would watch The Two Ronnies, The Dave Allen Show, Porridge, Dads army, etc. and I have adored British comedy for all of my life, and my son was also brought up the same way as I was and he has a huge collection himself. Also absolutely loved Red Dwarf, a later UK comedy that is brilliant. My dad died in December 2022 aged 87 and I am so grateful that he and I had those times, just us, laughing our butts off. Miss him so much.

I am very guilty at laughing at the most inappropriate moments. The worst was around the graveside at my grandmothers funeral. My gran’s sister wrote the card for the family wreath and instead of writing “From a loving family” she had written “ From a lovely family”. I spotted this at the graveside and started giggling which sort of spread around all those standing there. Not my finest moment! 🤣

I have to admit I laughed at my mums internment, but only because some mad lady showed up who wasn't invited and managed to drop her car keys in the hole. Only myself and my sister saw it happen and we were talking to the vicar at the time, we both just took off running in opposite directions through the graveyard because we couldn't stop laughing. I think the poor man thought we were mad. And she did get her keys back in the end.

There's actually more to the story. As you said the laughter is indeed real and they were extras. They go something like they only have one take of this shot cuz of budget, and they have to be completely still. No reaction, no laughing and anyone who does something out of character doesn't get paid. Hence you see they were so unprepared what's coming when they start rolling.
That scene is hilarious and it really got to me so much. You should react to the one in Monty Python and the holy grail where the knights sing "Sir Robin" and also when one of the knights asks a black knight if he would join his crew after seeing him defeat other knights.
The night before a Scout parade (St George's Day) another leader and I watched this. We paraded to the local church where the vicar introduced himself before his sermon: "Gweetings, I'm Wobin". We were crying with laughter for rest of the service...
I still love that they kept this as it was all an unscripted and those soldiers were genuinely laughing 😂🤣✌️🇦🇺
Wonderful. They just don't make comedy like this any more. Loved The Pythons.
Fabulous! When, as a teenager I saw this first scene in the cinema (movie theatre) "....and you know what his wife's called..." I laughed so hard, I fell off my seat into the aisle. It never fails to amuse me. 😄
I was at a funeral last year and the 3-year old grandson left behind had just been told he had to say please nicely in order to share. He literally screamed "please nicely!" and I had to repress the laugh.

What the people playing the guards didn't know was the use of Biggus Dickus. They were just told to "be stern", and while the cast went around getting reactions, those were their real reactions trying not to laugh.
Fun fact: even the director and the actors said that the joke comes across better in the German translation They said the same thing about the German title "Die Ritter der Kokusnuss" which is the German translation of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". the german titel is literally " the Knights of the coconut " (allusion to the horses that don't exist!) even the movie poster shows the "cheap version" with the coconuts
@robanderson473

Coconuts make for excellent mounts! I could be wrong, but I'm sure the reason they used coconuts was that the budget wasn't quite enough to cover real horses! Again, I could be wrong but if that's the case then it was a stroke of genius, regardless.🥥

We went to a show in Blackpool & there was this trio on singing a Toni Braxton ballad. I started chuckling to myself silently as they put so much emotion in to their routine but it got worse & my stomach muscles were rippling too. My friend whispered what's up? but I couldn't dare open my mouth. That set her off shaking silently. I was getting ready to rush out but thankfully they finished & I could laugh during the applause.

The giggle loop ("Coupling").
The first "Try not to laugh"-challenge seems to have been in Roman times
I just realised I'm the worst of the worst because you know in Happy Gilmore where he tells him to go to his happy place? Okay, so you know when you're in a room of people and someone says something, then something comes into your head that's like the most inappropriate thing to say at that moment, but a part in your mind says don't be a pussy so you just say it anyway? You're left with this moment where everyone takes that sharp intake of breath, like damn, did I hear that right? That moment right there, that's my happy place.
nowadays generations are feeling offended by the sketches of Monthy Python. We, the X-ers grew up with this humor of them. watch the Holy Grail. that's a classic one. We need more of these back on the TV. We need a good laugh again.
Monty Python is just amazing
Those romans who are laughing were extras and were not yold about the sctipt, the laughter you see is real lol, i love that about this film
apparently they were extras that were told to NOT LAUGH or else they'd not get paid, and told nothing about what was going to happen in the scene.
It brings to mind the scene in the principals office in the movie Porkys with the stiffled laughter.
In german this scene is even funnier. His speech impediment is even more pronounced and "Biggus Dickus" is translated to "Schwanzus Longus" which one could re-translate to "tailus longus". And instead of "b" he pronounces everything with a "p", so it's "werft den Purschen zu Poden" in german, the most iconic line from this movie in Germany.
The genius of Monty Python is encapsulated in this scene; probably the funniest clip of any movie of all time.
History’s first “try not to laugh” challenge.
"I'd rather say 'I have a missive diarrhea right now'" - cue the "He has a wife, you know" scene XD
I met Michael Palin and Terry Jones at the book signing of "The Life of Brian" script in Cardiff in 1980, Terry Jones called me a boring little tick! They were both brilliant, very nice people and five hours later I realised my face was aching from grinning all day.

The best of all is that the extras playing as the guards didn't know that this was gonna happen. The team told them to just stay there, on a serious face and hold it. xDDD
