When our (UK) company was taken over by a US corporation their HR dept went overboard on getting us to "feel part of the family". I'd had enough by the time they wanted our pictures to put against our profiles. I sent them a picture of Father Jack. They checked a couple of times and I reassured them it was really me. My official corporate pic was Father Jack for several years.

The actor Frank Kelly who played Father Jack (drunk old priest), was an accomplished actor with a great portfolio of work behind him before he acted in Father Ted. Dermot Morgan (Ted) and Ardal O'Hanlon (Dougal) were actually comedians first and foremost. While shooting the series, Frank Kelly would sometimes give the comedians acting advice, and jokingly referred to them as 'amateurs'. Kelly also outlived Dermot Morgan by 18 years. Sadly Morgan died shortly after wrapping the third series.
The old priest is the legendary Father Jack - played by the late Frank Kelly. It was such a great show!

It wasn't cancelled in 98, the middle/middle aged priest/actor died from a heart attack unexpectedly. It was beloved by Ireland and England but cut short due to its main actor dying.

@@drwhatson A myth apparently. Found this: "Linehan was in Ireland for the making of a definitive Father Ted documentary to be directed by Adrian McCarthy of Wildfire Films, one he hopes will dispel a lot of myths that have grown up about Ted. The biggest, he says, is that Father Ted was first offered to and refused by RTÉ. Linehan and Mathews had already been working in London and developing relationships with broadcasters for a while when they came up with the idea of Ted, so pitching it in the UK seemed like the sensible thing to do. ‘We didn’t do it with RTÉ because we were in England and we had a career there, so it would have been strange to go back to Ireland and start from the bottom in RTÉ, a company that never really made a successful studio sitcom. Because there was no infrastructure in Ireland for those kind of studio sitcoms, it would have been crazy to give it to them. RTÉ did many great things but studio sitcoms was not one of them"

From the series check out The passion of St Tibulus, Tentacles of Doom and Escape from Victory. It's a great show, it's rare you find sitcoms of this quality these days, the 90s were full of them.

I remember watching it for the first time at a friends house back in the 90s when I was at university in Maynooth in Ireland. I walked home and couldnt stop laughing all the way. Classic. Tom..."....father.....i keeled a man."
Father Ted was produced for Channel 4 in the UK. There was a time when the Catholic Church was very influential in Ireland - and Father Ted was made as the church was finally losing its grip. Priests often shared houses owned by the church and this picks up on that idea, placing them in an island parish at the arse end of nowhere. In Irish families, a son (sometimes the son who wasn't going to amount to much) would often be encouraged to enter the priesthood; this is where Father Dougal fits in. They were often lecherous heavy drinkers, too (Father Jack, who's brains have been melted by years of booze), and they often had a dotty housekeeper (here, the legendary Mrs. Doyle). It's a brilliant show. Bizarre and surreal...
Graham Linehan - one of the writers has had great success on UK TV. He is also responsible for The IT Crowd and Black Books, as well as contributing to Big Train, The Fast Show, The Armstrong and Miller Show and many more Brit TV comedies.
I think in each of the Parochial houses on the program, there are 3 Priests. There will be one like Ted who is the brains of the bunch. A stupid one like Dougal and a drunk like Jack.
Fantastic series....absolutely hilarious😂
I am so glad you appreciated this piece of comedy perfection, I would love to see you work your way through the whole lot, episode by episode, it has to be one of the funniest series ever, by any country! Great reaction, I had forgotten how funny it is because I have watched it too many times, the first viewing reaction is priceless!
They left out Jack's dream of when he visited a girls' school, as he was reminiscing in his chair, drooling.
When Madonna lived here a mile from me in Dorset she said Father Ted was her most favourite comedy ever!
React to The Young Ones...Anarchic 80s comedy. You'll end up saying..WTF! am i watching! and 90s comedy Bottom if you like mindless violence comedy fun 😆
I can't wait for the next episodes. Have you ever watched Fawlty Towers?
Every episode of FATHER TED is a gem! It won BAFTA's twice for best sitcom. The show was created by Graham LInehan, who also wrote two other award winning sitcoms, BLACK BOOKS and The IT Crowd. You should watch the entire episode from season 3 where Ted appears racist..its entitled "Are you right there,Ted?" Hilarious!
I don't know if this has been suggested, but "I am Alan Partridge" is one of the greatest British comedy series ever.

It's common for the first ep of a sitcom to be (one of) its weakest. It needs to introduce the characters, setting etc., leaving less time for comedy & plot. The IT Crowd, Peep Show, Drifters, Only Fools and Horses & Not Going Out all have a slow start.
