In Europe, football and sport in general is a real religion for most people, each city has its club, and you fight for it, rivalries are created between each club, sport in the USA is just a family hobby on Sunday.

Here in Europe there is passion, it is a way og life.. A lot of places you even get time off of work, if your national team is playing.. When it comes to fans, there is a lot of differences. We have fans that meet up before every game, talk about games, drinking and having fun before we go to the game and its just the love of the sport and your team. But there is also people who just, take it to far. I saw a guy who had his 9 year old son with him to his first football game here in Denmark, and some fan of the other team ran straight up and punch him out, right i infront of his 9 year old son, beacuse he was wearing another team. That ain't love of football. But most of the people, do come for the love of the game and their team. And yes, we do throw a lot of shade on the other teams. But there's a big difference between chants and straight up beating people for the fun of it, especially infront of their kids.

True story from WW1 in the Balkans: In periods of relative peace(when noone has an upper hand and no major move is to be made by either side, just staying in position), to give some entertainment and relief to the soldiers, a British commander organized football teams and a mini tournament. When a match was played, the enemy cannons would go quiet, and even the enemy soldiers would come up the hills to watch the game from a distance. Sometimes, a fight between players would break out, and sometimes it will be stopped not by the teams and refferees, but by a single enemy cannon shot in the air. The enemy`s way of saying - peace during football - yes, peace during football fights - no! It`s in the memoires of the British general. Football is like the duel of old - passion-driven, honour-bound. That`s why fans sometimes say - we are the club. Win or lose - we support it, cause it is more than just 11 field players, goals scored and championship standing. It`s like supporting your country. Then again, there are also those who just go to the games to get drunk, maybe light a fire, maybe break something, maybe get into a fight with whoever, all of them beat boredom anyway :)

Every single country has teams. Each city can have one, two or more clubs. For us, Europeans, football is life. You become a fan because your dad or your grandfather was a fan. For example, I'm a thrid generation supporter of my home club. That's how old those clubs are. That's how dedicated we are to support them. We don't change support for the club. You are a fan until you die. In my country, there's a saying: "You can change your house, your car or your wife. But you can never change your club".

Football brings up primal emotions with male fans in Europe and the world in general except for US and Canada. Here in Europe it's the closest thing we have to the raiding bands of Vikings in the middle ages. I guess it's an urge Europeans have, East and West, even though we seem "sophisticated and cultured" to you, this is who we are DEEP DOWN. A bunch of tribal factions fighting each other.

Every city has its own team, or several. Depending on what part of the city (or part of the country) you grow up in, you root for "your" team - and that NEVER changes. Every country has its own top flight league with 20-ish teams, and then there are 5-6 divisions underneath with 20 teams in each. This means that each country in Europe (and South America) has hundreds of teams, with their own fans. These fans are all die hard in love with their clubs, no matter what division they play in. The City of London (England), for instance, has dozens of teams and each team's fans HATE the other London clubs.

Man beating drums down a street in a different city is great. We did that in Portland last year for the MLS Cup Final. 3,000 fans (myself included) from New York to watch our team and we marched from downtown Portland all the way to their stadium, drums, banners, flags, songs and chants. Cops shut down the streets and blocked off traffic as we basically invaded their city for one day. Oh we also won, worth the 6+ hour trip which cost way too much money lol. Also not the largest away support in the U.S. I think Toronto one season bought like 5,000 people down to Columbus for an away game back in like 2007 or something.

I'm German. I think the reason is that Europe has always been at war with each other and taking land from each other. That is why there is a great love of home in Europe. I only watch football on TV and I'm not a hooligan, but if I was in a game from my home country, drank a lot of alcohol and our rivals insult us all the time, I think I would attack the others with my team because it's feels like they're belittling our homeland and finding their homeland better than ours. I know this sounds ridiculous, but imagine if we were to slander your homeland, your origins and everything you stand for all the time. We hate each other but when it comes to our homeland we are all united and fighting side by side.

The police are there mainly to keep the different teams fans away from each other, especially at same city derbies where there can be hundreds of years of history, rivalry and tribalism.

football or soccer is huge outside of America. Here in africa during civil wars there is usually a temporary pause to the war to allow the national team to play. the 1967 biafra civil war in nigeria and as recent as ivory coast. but governments and rebels know not to touch football

Ohh, the passion... Many clubs with supporters decide specific places before the matches to streetfight. With weapons. Not guns. But fists and knocklirons, bats, batons etc. It is fueld by hate, and adrenalin. Somtimes fans get killed. And in south America even players have gotten killed(shot) for not performing good enough. This aint no southern tailgate barbeque. It's life or death. The police are geared up for a reason. Much Love to you and Ukraine 🌻🌻🌻💙💛💙

The ting is, You have 2 teams that play against each other and therefore 2 groups of fans. If you leave it out of the stadium at the same time, it's war. So the police try to keep them separate because the stadium is often in the city.

  • @reqa8585

In some cities there can be alot of teams, some have 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8, and so on... And the rivalry grows strong cause you dedicate your life to it, lots of your salary goes to the team and game days, all the flags and everything you see the fans use on when they cheer on their team the either make it themself or buy it straight off. So it's blood sweat and tears litteraly. And like alot of people sid it's like a religion. Check out world Cup, euro cups hooligans of football. They go crazy. That's litteraly all of the hooligans thats from the specific country that have rivalry at home but at worlds and euro they link up under 1 banner basically

Going to be honest with you guys.....I would be very careful going to some of these footie games being black. I'm white and English and have been to a couple of these games in Poland and Bulgaria and it can get very unhinged depending what stand you are in. My wife is Polish and tells me to keep my mouth shut when we are in the stands as the thugs can kick off knowing you are not one of them. I happened to get into a fight in the stand and had beer thrown over me for being English with a Polish women. A lot of these people hate everyone equally so it's not aimed at just one group. Oh, and the bananas are often thrown at black players and the fans wear the ski masks so they don't get caught behaving badly.

In that particular case, the away team's home stadium is a leisurely 5 minute walk from the stadium where the game is played 😂. It's the 'eternal darby' game between Red Star (the home team) and Partizan (the away team), both from Belgrade, Serbia. These are the two biggest teams in Serbia (and former Yugoslavia, back when it existed), and have fans across the country and in neighboring countries were Serbians live, and those people frequently travel to such games.

we can say this that in Europe we cant just buy a team like NHL did with Vegas. Here in Europe its a city and in the city there can be more teams in it, like one team from north side of the city and one from west and there u have a derby when they play AND if they are in the same league table, The teams need to work up from lower tabels to the higest and if u are the last teams at the end of season u get relegated to the table under. So u need to win all the games :) In USA u cant drop out the table so the passion is gone. WE love our club and fight, scream, bengals and sing. YNWA
