Americans’ First King's Day in Amsterdam

Even though we have lived in Amsterdam for a few years, we always seem to be out of town on King's Day. Not this year! Join us as we walk the streets and see how crazy the party really gets in the capital city of The Netherlands, Amsterdam!

✼ ABOUT US ✼
We are Nate and Katrina, two Americans living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and traveling as much as we can to see what there is to see! Call us expats, immigrants, whatever... just call us already.
We balance work life with travel... as best we can! We would love to visit every country in Europe while we live here, and definitely keep a list of our global “must visit” destinations.
We try to give you a true view of us and how we travel and explore the world. Lots of food, definitely some jokes, and probably some swearing…. Hope you enjoy taking these trips with us!

I'm sure next year you'll do it again. The thing I love most in your videos is see you two having fun. This was fun. You had bad expectations and it turned out just fine. Someone recognized Katrina? Wow. Amazing. And it's all good. Maybe your fear of people and questionable streetfood is wearing off when you get older? Cudos for your outfits! You really made an effort. Thanks! 👍👍🥳

As a Dutchie who was ill on Kingsday, thank you for sharing your experience! One thing about the flags though, they usually come out during special occassions. If a high-school student passes their exam you'll probably see a flag with a backpack hanging on it. Today (the 4th of May), you will probably see the flags half-raised because of Remembrance-day where as tomorrow on Liberation day they will be up again!

Great video and lovely humor you both have. We moved from Amsterdam to Portugal (Lisbon area) three years ago and the Kings day (in the past Queens day) were always favourite days throughout the year. We lived near the Vondelpark so you could choose the amount of people you like to meet. I always avoid the Prinsengracht crossing Jordaan and Westerstraat. These places always get the most tourist and no fun to be with all the drinking and music. Katrina my wife agrees totally with your dressing style. Orange in many layers. Keep up the good work and we enjoy the sunny life here.

I'm now almost at the end of your video and although there are not many people around me, I'm exhausted. Where is my tompouce when I need one? Btw, it's not street food. Too many people! Argggghhh! Tompouce isn’t street food. 12:30 they’re throwing it at “Feyenoord”, there’s a big rivalry between Ajax (Amsterdam football team) and Feyenoord (Rotterdam football team), but Ajax sucks now, so they’re only able to win from Feyenoord with silly eggs.

I'm sorry to say this, but since a few years i've grown a pretty big dislike to this 'king' and his wife, and i don't celebrate his birthday. And like many Dutch people, also those who do party, only a handful actually celebrate his birthday, most people just grab any chance of having a party, just for the sake of having a party.

Yes. It's better to have a president. Presidents really unite a country. Nobody likes to party anymore. Look at these people in The Netherlands. Everybody is unhappy and in a bad mood. We need old men like Trump or Biden here. That will make us as good as Murica.

I don’t get why people say it is an ancient institution and it’s not something for current times. Are they going to say the same about a president in 200 years? And who knows the name of the president of Finland or Portugal? Or from our neighbor Germany for that matter. 98% don’t know them, but most of them do know the king of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Spain etc. Royals have just that tiny bit more attention. And on state visits the organizing country rather have a king and queen than a president, with the exception of the president of the US. Every president is a political appointee and subject to party politics, not something I like. Also economically it has more value to have a king and queen than a president. On state visits a king (and/or queen) can visit lots of businesses and factories and broker deals if necessary. Or behind the screens talk about or speed up the process in case of extradition, Dutch citizens in jail, human rights, Dutch appointees for international organizations, or other binational or international issues. A king (and/or queen) has more weight on the scale than a president, in most countries that is. Presidents are so often partizan or insignificant and every four or five years there is an election for a president half the country doesn’t want and doesn’t feel represented by. In that case I rather have a king (and/or queen) which I can’t choose and who is above party interest. How much more money it may cost compared to a president. Which is not as much as people think it is.

@@Jan.Folkersma ''Presidents really unite a country'' Ehh no, but they could tho. ''Nobody likes to party anymore.'' I don't think 'liking' is the problem here. ''unhappy and in a bad mood.'' Absolutely true, and the cause of that is over a decade of Rutte and friends. And anyone wanting a Biden and his policies, is an idiot. ''as good as Murica.'' There's a lot of no good, even horrific, to find over there. And yes, also a lot of good, but not so much as many people think.
