MY biggest pet peeve on videos where people find the random Americans to speak for us is when they don't make it known that this country is huge AF and we have different words for things based on cultural and regional differences. A lot of the British English words are widely used in the States too. For example, her calling a clearly glass cup just a normal cup and then made it seem like all Americans say that was weird. We say glass and use cup for non-glass cups just like anyone else. We also say fridge, roundabout (I never hear traffic circle), people outside of the northeast don't usually say "sneakers"... we call them tennis shoes, shoes, gym shoes, or we call it the brand name like "got a new pairs of Nikes, Jordans, etc." We also call it trash. I called shopping carts "buggies" because I'm from the south. The question about soap was annoying and arbitrary AF in my opinion. Soap is usually called whatever it's function is... dish soap, body wash, face wash, etc. The theater/cinema picture was kinda misleading because that looks nothing like a movie theater I've seen here. It looks like the opera.

It’s the same for Britain too. Britain may be a small country but there are tons of different dialects in Britain. There are actually more British dialects than American. There are about 30 American dialects and about 40 British ones. I’m British and a lot of things he said in the video, I don’t say and a lot of the American words said in this video also get used in the UK. Like I have never heard anyone say “dustman” before. That’s a bin man because he takes out the rubbish bins. And I don’t say film, that sounds too posh, I say movie. Watch a movie at the cinema.

Sometimes up north we use the American versions of words too. I’d never actually heard of the word ‘dustman’ until this video and we say license plate here too. Maybe it would be best if people in the videos stated what area they’re from too so outsiders know it’s only a representation of that area and not the whole countries.

Here's the short explanation to why those words are like that: Candy comes from the original phrase to describe those tasty little things, candied sugar! Eventually the sugar part was dropped and we just called it Candy. We call movies, movies, because back when it was "invented" (Fuck Thomas Edison) people used to call them "Moving Pictures", then those people said "Moving Pictures is a mouthful, we'll just call them movies instead". Thus, we call them movies. Lastly, Soccer. We call soccer, soccer, from what the British called it 200 years ago, Association Football. We just shortened it down from that to soccer since there were technically other forms of Football (rugby for example). Made it a bit more distinctive from the other "Footballs" *Note, I'm not an expert, I've just got access to google, I've probably gotten something wrong but y'know it is what it is

I'm Canadian and we use the American term for most things but sometimes the British term. In a few cases, we have an entirely different term. For example, where an American would say "sneakers" and a Brit would say "trainers", we might well say "runners" or "running shoes". By the same token, we might say "sofa" or "couch" or even "chesterfield" for that long seat in your living room or rec room. When it comes to car parts, we again use a mix of American and British words and sometimes both interchangeably; for instance, I've heard lots of Canadians say "alternator" but I've also heard many say "generator".

As a German I am really surprised how often I would totally prefer to use either the British or the American word and often I know both and don't even know the words were local differences and not only synonyms. Therefore I think I speak a mix of both versions of English which makes sense because I listen to both about the same amount of time and often don't even realize which version I'm listening to right now.

I didn't even know there were so many differences, i was taught the british english but when i left school i started consuming global english content, so my vocabulary is basically american-british-aussie.

Singaporean here. I interchange the words quite often. Sometimes it's to be more specific. A pigeon hole is an open-mailbox while a mailbox is one where it can be closed and locked.

We still call them roundabouts In America.

Hope Lona I am from the Pacific Northwest and I hear roundabout. Fridge is more common to say that refrigerator. So it really depends on what part of the US. The US is really big and lexicon varies greatly

Fridge and roundabout are the most common names in America for 10 and 11 (Also 46 we call it a road if it’s small and street if it’s big I think)

American here - I say "fridge", "roundabout", "bill", 'trousers", "wardrobe" (a closet is a room for clothes, a wardrobe is a cabinet for clothes). A lot of this is going to depend on region as well because southerners call a shopping cart "buggy" and sneakers "tennis shoes", etc. But a fun comparison nevertheless. I'm so going to use "bum bag" for "fanny pack" from now on. That's awesome.

i thought it was a service station but then i realised that it's just the petrol station by itself😅😅 in England, we have the petrol station and a few of other shops like WHSmith, KFC, Burger King, Costa, Starbucks and Marks & Spencers etc included in the whole service station (but in a separate area) and they're located every bunch of miles on the motorway.

In America we do say fridge and road as well as street and roundabout and some of us do say herbs with the H

This is a little hard to pin down for just a picture of someone who is holding their neck.

As an American, i have never heard the words "traffic circle" describing a roundabout before.

I say street when it’s more of a Main Street with all the lines and stuff but road when I’m talking about a dead end or cul de sac or a non paved road or back road.

Up north in the uk we say things a lot different like down south pants are underpants but up north pants are trousers

Some things, for example at 3:20 aren’t the same for everywhere in England. For example, we call trash cans just a ‘bin’ more than we say ‘dustbin’. And we say ‘binman’ rather than ‘dustman’ but I’m from Northern England so it’s probably a regional thing.

Pavement on my country, is the material that we use to build our streets/roads, sidewalk is where the people walk, normally, they walk on the street here, when is not a busy street, road is on the country side here, street on city XD

I’m American (northeast Indiana) and I’ve never heard a single person call it a “traffic circle.” It’s a round-a-bout. And most people around here just call it a fridge as well.
