I'd like to point out that if you say "Go to hospital/school/church", that means you are going to that facility in order to enjoy the service it provides. So, you "go to hospital" as a patient, "go to school" as a student, and "go to church" as a devotee. If you go to those places for any other reason, then you should use "go to the hospital/school/church". So, for instance, if you work there (doctor, teacher, priest...) or you're are visiting someone who's had surgery, or you're picking up your children after class or you're enjoying the works of art in the church, then you do need the article.

"To hospital" isn't a weird thing. We don't just drop an article for no reason. We say "in hospital" (or to hospital) to mean that the subject is a hospital patient. This is to distinguish it from "in THE hospital", which simply means in the BUILDING. "In hospital" means that the person is in the care of the institution of the healthcare system. It's the same thing as saying "He's in prison". That means the person is actually a convict - as opposed to "in the prison", meaning, a person simply visiting the building. When Americans say "I need to go to THE hospital", it's unclear whether they are in need of medical attention; or if they just need to visit the building for any other reason.

Each of these expressions has a certain "class", which consciously or not you reflected in the different accents you used. "Well I never" would probably not be used by someone who said "well good" and vice versa, unless they had two distinct groups of friends.

In the US, "Well I never" is often the response to something offensive or shocking: "You have the ugliest baby I've ever seen!" "Well I never!" It's not very common anymore, though.

You mean "Yes, cheers"?
"It doesn't exist in any other dialect." I've always been against proclaiming the existence or non-existence of words or expressions. I would say, "It isn't used in any other dialect." The fact that a word is not registered in the dictionary does not mean you cannot use it. If the listener or reader grasps what you mean, then it's fine. Many years ago (back in the 1990s), when dialing a wrong number on the phone in Spain, you'd get a metallic nasal female recording declaring that "el número marcado no existe" (the number you dialed does not exist". When dialing a number in Germany, the recorded reply was "Keine Anschluss unter dieser nummer" (No connection under this number--this truly makes sense, even if I may have misspelled something in German ). Nowadays in Spain they seem to have sorted out the existential affairs of numbers, because the message has morphed into "El número marcado no corresponde a ningún abonado" (the number you dialled does not correspond to any subscriber/user).

Crikey = Blimey = Good Heavens!
Brits and Australians say 'crikey' - it's a corruption of 'Christ' and to be used in polite company(!). 'Blimey' is a contraction and corruption of 'God blind me'. It is (or was) sometimes said as 'Gor blimey', although from my experience of knowing a London family (my in-laws) it tends to have been used more there. Down here in the West Country, in response to 'How are you?' we could say 'Fair t'middlin'!, although to be honest, with the dilution of the dialect and the passing of the older generations it's less likely to be heard now.
@r.fairlie7186

John Penny - I really appreciate your contribution. I’m interested in gems like these for both linguistic and historical reasons. You may already know that “Fair to middling” or your abbreviation is said here in Australia too. I’m not sure if it’s generational but I used to make puns with my surname so I do remember that phrase.

Im British! 2:51 wallahi means I swear by Allah. It's an oath. It's not an exclamation. It is a very serious oath that should not be used for little things and used with care and caution. If you say wallahi and what you say is not true you have to fast for 3 days in Islam. It is a sign of the end of the world that people will say wallahi for everything and sometimes not even mean it. I'm born and bred in Scotland but my dad is Algerian and my mum is half Pakistani. That's not even the half of it
