Carriers, subs, planes, radar...four keys to American success. Not the only ones but very important.

One of the WW2 submariners in that campaign was a radioman named Fred Gwynne. He forged a copy of his birth certificate to enlist in the USN at the age of 15. 'Herman Munster' truly was one of the youngest members of the "Greatest Generation".

WHAT U.S. SUBMARINES. Love these stories but could the titles relate a little more to what the episode is about.

Oh, dear! The character Pug Henry from the novel "The Winds of War" was commanding the cruiser Northampton in this battle. His cruiser was sunk and he had to swim for it to save his life.

@@kevinmoore7975 I know, but given the seriousness of the Guadalcanal campaign situation and no capital allied ships there for reasons, the Marine could use all of the help they receive from the navy even subs to halt Japanese reinforcements.

Anti submarine warfare wasn't well understood at the time. In the Atlantic the US and UK had broken Enigma and were able to figure out where German subs were at and headed. They operated within controlled areas and regularly sent updates. Japanese commanders were given more freedom in picking their patrols. This made them less effective than U-boat wolfpacks, but also made them harder to predict and find. Pacific command also way underestimated the range and accuracy of Japanese torpedoes. So, even after they struck, US ships often searched the wrong location. There were a lot of myths and theories about Japanese abilities and tactics that the US had to be forcedly proven wrong in the first two years of the war.
