American State Flag Redesigns are BORING (But We Can Do Better)
Ойын-сауық
Roman Mars’ 2015 TED Talk on flag design ignited a wave of interest in improving the flags of American cities and states… but nearly a decade later, the results are a bit of a mixed bag. In my view, the prevailing wisdom of the North American Vexillological Association is too restrictive, placing excessive emphasis on simplicity and minimalism, and leading to some pretty boring new flags. Join me as I explore the recent history of this movement within American culture, examine the widely cited “principles of good flag design,” and offer both my own thoughts, as well as redesigns that I believe strike a balance between iconic simplicity and creative distinctiveness.
Uh… happy April Fools’ Day?

Given that New Jersey is named "The Garden State" for its long rich history in agriculture (which are symbolized in the old flag by the three farm plows in the coat of arms) You could have done well to add some farming symbols to your flag design, maybe a farming tool, like the plow, a pitch fork or even a sickle. Maybe it would have been a good idea if your horse was shown pulling a plow.

Well, I like the minimalism of your Massachusetts flag and the six stars symbolizing its place as the sixth state in the union is nice, I think it would have been nice to represent more of its early history as a 17th century colonial state. Such as an image of the Mayflower landing on Plymouth rock, symbolizing the Founding of the Plymouth Massachusetts colony in 1620, or maybe an image of a Thanksgiving dinner representing the first Thanksgiving in which was held in Plymouth in 1621.

Cool video! I personally think the states whose flags have not been redesigned should hold referendums to gauge public interest. If the majority doesn't want a new flag, then that's totally okay! I also imagine what makes a great flag design is one that stands the test of time. Also at 3:49 be careful of CGP Grey because he copyright claims others if they're critical of him.

Couldn't agree more. It's a cool design unless or until you repeat it again and again. There are a couple of flag redesign videos that repeat this EXACT same practice. Fair enough, it's hard to come up with a cool design, but once these content creators do, they can't wait to use some variation of it on 20 different flags. This is how we ended up with so many SOABs in the first place! And can we move away from suggesting the state flower be on the flag? It works for Mississippi, it's solid; let's not devalue their great flag by copying the premise for all these others.
Ohioan here. This redesign would never fly here, we rather like our non-rectangular flag as something unique we have.

Also a lot of state flowers. Like why would you make the central focus of a New Hampshire flag about the state flower? New Hampshire has the perfect state symbol of The Old Man on the Mountain, plus the color most associated with the state is green, not purple. If any state should have a primarily purple flag, Connecticut makes the most sense, but he gave them the Washington Commanders Burgundy and Gold for some reason.

On the OK flag, it’s not a dream catcher. It’s an Osage shield with 7 eagle feathers. And removing the olive branch and peace pipe removes the symbolism of the peace between the European and Indian nations that now live there together. Also (less importantly) the little crosses on the shield are actually stars. The original flag had a star but Okies thought it looked too socialist.

yeah, I agreed with his general thesis at the beginning pretty much in its entirety, but his aesthetic tastes are clearly very different from my own. I was particularly disappointed where the state either has or had a distinctive and meaningful (imo the two most important of the 5 points) flag with a long history (Ohio, Vermont, and Maine so far, and I’m guessing California will get that treatment too when they get there) and change them for his personal taste.
As an alaskan, I will say, I do not like your flag, the polarbear is not that special here lol

Hopefully this video doesn’t get “flagged” for its content. ;) Jokes aside, April Fools Cardinal. Everyone.
I like animals on flags, but i strongly disagree with the idea they need to abstracted or simplified right out of the gate. The great thing about detail is it's easy to remove in situations you don't want it but hard to add; so you might as well include "detailed" drawings on the official flags and only resort fo the abstract versions when necessary (e.g. the welsh flag has a very detailed dragon, but also is easily simplified when they want to stick it on merchandise) The only important rule imo is "is it embraced in a transformative way by the public - do they stick it on cakes, tattoos, tourist merch etc.?
I personally think Rhode Island's flag being square is better because it's more unique. Plus, it's technically the smallest aspect ratio, and Rhode Island is the smallest state, so it's a perfect match.

I laughed at "armchair artist". Isn't that what all reviewers and critics are, in a way?
22:09 I got scared as the thing in the center of the South Dakota one looks WAY too close to the symbol of SS burgundy
a white flag with a red pine tree is the flag of new england, thats why it showed up in so many massachusetts redesigns

Why would you get rid of the coolest part of Ohio’s flag??? It not being a rectangle is what makes it so unique and cool.
As a fellow Virginian I'm kind of split on the redesign, I like the flag itself and the parts thereof, but it kind of removes the fighting tyranny part of the flag that I like. Also it might be a bit unfair but the cardinal looks a bit too close to your own cardinal to me and in that context it feels a bit wrong if that makes sense. For the other states my favorite redesign just on looks for me is either West Virginia or Indiana, and I'm sorry but the Ohio white space filler flag is absolutely the worst one to me, I personally really like unconventional flag shapes and I don't think it needs changes at all. As another note I think the Wyoming flag didn't really need changes to the border, just remove the seal and it's pretty much perfect.

I think I would just get rid of the state name, recenter the eagle and banner, and call it a day for the redesign. As far as words breaking “flag design rules”, Americans have been breaking rules since before 1776.
Don't take those rules seriously. Lots of great flags break those rules
As an Idahoan, Idaho has way too much negative space I would suggest a design similar to Utah's but a focus on the gem, its a good motif to both states being settled by Latter-Day Saint pioneers
@lukeporras1288
14 күн бұрын
My favorite design for an Idaho flag is by a chap named Phillip Tibbetts. It uses a white or gold six-pointed star on solid maroon/red, with each point of the star separated by negative space. The star represents a stylized gem as well as being a unique and distinctive symbol.
Finally someone who has a similar Vexillogical opinion as me. although you definately have a stronger bias to horizontal stripes than me lol.
best re-design: Vermont; honorable mentions: Missouri, Kansas; worst re-design: New York. but as an upstater maybe i am biased. i don't like the 100% removal of any detail in the flags. the detail on the bear in California for example, or the landscapes of the seals .. they add a lot of personality! but i truly have never thought about flag design before so thanks for another thought provoking video.

As an Oregon resident, I agree that the reverse of our flag is much better than the obverse, but I didn't care too much for your redesign. The colors you chose (really, mostly just the red) just don't seem aesthetically pleasing to me, and the stripes and circle are too abstract and look too similar to several of your other redesigns. I think using fewer design elements would have been better in that case. The beaver is distinctive enough, so just make it bigger and drop the circle and some of the stripes. Also, I like the non-rectangular Ohio flag, it's distinctive and looks nice. Filling in the space with white just looks unfinished and bad, like you accidentally exported without transparency or something. Otherwise I think your designs were pretty good in at least 3/4 of cases.
@spacebar1008
5 күн бұрын
Same, plus I’m rather partial to having two designs on the same flag. Keeping that unique aspect and utilizing it in a redesign would be far cooler then just getting a neat-looking but mono-meaning flag. You could even use the two sides to better represent the two very different halves of Oregon.
I cannot unsee it but the GA flag redesign you did looks like a Pokeball with the state seal in the center where the button would be
The "rules" for flags should not be considered as much as they are. I have never seen one of these state flag redesigns that didn't ruin what the original flag had going. Most of the U.S. state flags as they are, prior to the few flags that were recently changed, all have charm to them, and they all have unique and meaningful symbols, including some of the flags that are just a state seal. I personally believe that words, seals, and detailed designs work perfectly fine on flags.
State flag redesigns always feel off, with the exception of the actual new Utah flag. I think it mostly comes down to colors. I notice that the redesigns can't just have normal colors, they always use either an overly dark shade, or overly bright shade.

8:53 I hate to "um, actually" an April Fool's video, but the reason for that activity in South Carolina is because there is actually no design standard (in more ways than one) for the state flag. All use the crescent in the canton, the palmetto, & dark blue field, but each flag manufacturer has a slightly different proprietary design. (For example, they use different shades of blue, different crescent shapes, and different palmetto designs.) The recent activity has been to try & standardize the flag design.

But I feel it would be better if the states did have more unique designs. But overall you did a good job with these designs.
For Ohio, I'd fill in the blank sections with black instead of white. Make it look more distinct, and it doesn't look like the white stripes are fading into the background.

As a North Carolinian I’m fine with the flag you gave us. (The Dogwood flower is a nice touch)
CGP Grey did it best in his video putting all the state flags on a tier list. Realizing there are so many flags in this country that are just a seal on blue with the state name somwehere on it makes so many state flags look to similar. There needs to be an emphasis on symbols and simplistic colors so that you can identify each state flag from a distance even when the flag isn't blowing in the wind. It's a symbol, not a nametag, not money, not a note you're passing in class, it's primarily going to be seen from a distance, so reading any words on it is kinda pointless.
I think it's fitting for local flags to be more detailed and specific while the flags of countries are much more simple and broad.

People keep dragging Nevada's flag but tbh I love it. Maybe I'm biased because I'm from Nevada, but I personally feel like it has a lot of personality. Plus you could joke the main design being concentrated in one area against a lot of negative space reflects how sparsely Nevada is populated outside of a few major cities. I do like the redesign too, but it just doesn't feel quite like Nevada to me. Honestly if I were to make a happy medium I'd take that silver and sort of create a diagonal divide from the lower left to the upper right half. Which could reflect both raw and refined silver. As miners finding silver would come across "blue mud". Because gee, the silver state sure is great. Also I like our sagebrush , it's pretty.

As a native to New Hampshire, you should have used the pink lady slipper as inspiration.
Lots of beautiful redesigns, very interesting video. Something I've noticed after watching a couple of these flag redesign videos is that most users come up with a great design idea that becomes considerably less interesting and distinguishable the more it's repeated on multiple states' flags. Here, it's the circular design with a horizontal element behind it. With each repetition of that cool configuration, it became less eye-catching. It's just like the dozen or so SOABs we currently have. Similarly, while Mississippi's flag became S-tier when it was redesigned from the Confederate embarrassment it used to be into the modern state flower dominant flag it is now, I can see said flag becoming less interesting if all these other states adopted a similar layout and put their state flower/tree on them. So for the sake of a really great flag, I must beg the other states to come up with better symbolism than just adding their official foliage as their central feature.
The Arkansas redesign looks like a minor league baseball logo more than a state flag
Yo the minnesota flag seal originally had a native riding west into the sunset, getting pushed out by farmers. Some tribes here didnt fly the flag and hated having the seal on all their paperwork. My favorite of these is Pennsylvania. Instantly recognizable as "Yes, that's definitely Pennsylvania!" The keystone is a relatively simple geometric shape but unique to Pennsylvanian symbology. And just 2 colors for maximum simplicity. My second-favorite is Wyoming. Also instantly recognizable, but the bison is bit more difficult for, say, a child to draw from memory.
PHO3NIX FLAG WAS MENTIONED MY LIFE IS COMPLETE
So, I had no idea that a TED talk started the whole flag redesign thing (I live under a rock sometimes). But I was thrilled when Utah (my home state) started our flag redesign a few years ago. I never liked the old state seal slapped on a blue background. Hell, our state seal is even pretty boring. It’s just the US seal with a beehive in the middle. In fact, that was really my only real hope - that whatever design was chosen, it had the beehive symbol in a place of prominence. Most of the short-listed entries had that beehive, I am pleased to say. And I love that the colors of the new flag are meant to evoke the blue of the mountains, the red rocks, and the white salt flats (and white snow, of course). Utah has some pretty varied landscapes, and I think our new flag represents all those features quite well. Thanks for the video. Fascinating stuff! Even if it was “just” an April Fools vid. 😉
Loved the Wisconsin redesign, but as a flag enjoyer, I think you should've replaced the beaver with a star as the beaver was a bit to complex for a flag. Great work though!
In NC we also have the cardinal
I feel like a lot of these flags have the same issue of soabs, that being, they aren't very unique, like, if you showed me New York and Iowa, I'd have no clue which is which. It's basically just taking the issue with soabs, and expanding it to flags that didn't already have a soab.
Some of these are very pretty! A lot of state symbol circled in the middle, but a fair number of them work for me at least individually.
Yooo love to see you enjoy South Carolinas Flag! Its my homestate so, also love your Virginia Redesign!
One thing that I think these designs are missing, is how they look waving on a flag pole. The North Carolina state flag actually looks really nice when you put it on a flag pole and see it in the sunlight. I think flags look best when the "weight" of its design is asymmetrical. Either heavy close to the pole, or more designed on the flowing end. A lot of these symetrical designs are very nice, but would probably look nicer as badges than flags

the ct redesign looks so cool
For North Carolina just use the one during the civil war without text, the only difference is the red and blue are flipped but its such a good design
I love the redesigns, though I think overall you went a little heavy on similar animals, plants, flowers on too many of the flags. I'd maybe make just one or two states have flowers, one or two have tree leaves, one or two have animals (think through which states most identify with those symbols), and then look for alternative symbols for the rest (perhaps some human-centered symbols too, they don't all have to be nature or animals). Lastly, maybe revisit a few of the "horizontal line" flags and think through whether we can get more variety there. Just my two cents. This was a really neat video though, nice work!
Georgia’s flag is literally just the old confederate flag with a seal on it

His redesign sucks though. I made one less confederate in less than a minute. It’s that easy to fix, but the government can’t just seem to do it.
Virginia’s flag is already GOATed and you cannot change my mind.
Your we redesigns heal similar to each other but different but I like that
Honestly the flag redesigns that you made are way better!!
I feel like each state flag should only be allowed to have a single star or a single symbol to be interpreted as a star. Having 6 stars representing the 6th state is unnecessary. The other state flags already have their own stars and do not need to be shown on another states flag.
