American Song Contest 2022 Top 56 Ranking (After Show) With Comments

I have actually been watching this and have been pleasantly surprised how well the show has been put together but even more important, pleasantly surprised by a lot of the songs! A lot more of these were enjoyable than I was expecting. I have been a bit disappointed with the jury results and actually, a lot of the public voting. There's not a lot of diversity in the entries being put forward into the semi finals and I definitely find a lot of the songs similar.
There are of course a lot of bland, unexciting entries...but that's to be expected considering who's involved in the organising of the contest but, I have to admit that overall, they've done a really good job. I know the ratings haven't been great but I do hope that the show is considered a success and we get (at least) one more edition of it.
So here is my ranking of the song selection. I do know that my ranking is radically different from the other rankings out there but this is reflective of my own personal taste and I hope that the comments I've left go some way to explaining why I've placed songs where I've placed them.

    Unfortunately, I'm not feeling positive either. With Bjorkman going back to work on ESC 2024, it implies that he might not be so invested in pushing for an ASC return. ;;

You have an incredible top five and out of 56 total songs, the fact we have so many similarities is amazing! Heat 3 was also the worst in terms of result for me in terms of result as the three public choices were some of the most mediocre songs in the competition and some of the most talented artists (Delaware, Louisiana) were rated lowly by professional juries.

I'm so glad you love Washington as much as I do, it's my winner along with Rhode Island (and I was really impressed with his vocals, which will surely improve even more till the next round). Also loved to see the support for DC and Maryland, both have really unique structures but both are soo enjoyable imo, and especially the first one is rather underrated everywhere (main contest included). Other favourites of mine you kinda underrated were Pennsylvania and Texas, but I understand the criticisms you formed. All in all great video, always enjoying your comments and the editing was really smooth too! 😊

Thank you so much! Washington's getting a lot of play with me at the moment and even though it's not for me so much, I can see the appeal in Rhode Island. Got to shout out to Maryland and Sisqo. Every other big name act came in with a weak effort that wouldn't stand up to their previous work in music but he took it seriously and put forward a great song. DC is my big discovery of the contest. I'm super excited to experience more music of this genre going forward. I'm not taking anything back on Texas but I'll give you some on Pennsylvania. Honestly, when watching her introduction package, I told my partner that I Bri and that she had the potential to be amazing...so the flat song was a bit of a disappointment considering her story, personality and quality of voice. It's not bad, I just expected more. This video took ages to do since I need to make a new template that kinda captured the graphical style of the show whilst still being able to be customised. It's not perfect but I think it went ok!

Really glad to see Jocelyn in the Top 5 too, and I hope Allen Stone can live up to your ranking in the actual final. With the really bad results from SF2, I'm pretty much locked in on Washington as the song I want to win. Actually, the results were SO bad that I'm not rooting for Oklahoma, too! Because of all the songs being produced by the same label, a lot of them sound really similar...or at least constructed the same way. As a result, I kinda gravitate to the songs that are a bit more standout. It's why things like Nebraska, Kansas, Washington etc. are all quite high up on my list! If you do finish your video, please do provide a link! I'd love to see it. There haven't been enough top 56's made and I'm sure I've seen most of the ones that have been already!

My top 5 are 1. Oklahoma: Been a fan of Alexa since her debut. Loved the song. Many contestants seemed to have issues with the backtrack being too loud not just Alexa (I also noticed it for Rhode Island, Mississippi, and New Jersey) so it was definitely ASC’s fault and not Alexa’s. They turned it down for her semi final performance and she was still amazing. 2. Colorado: Also a huge fan of Riker and have been since 2015. His music has always just brought a smile to my face and this song was no different. 3. Puerto Rico: I love music that has a Latin flare and this song is so fun. 4. Texas: I don’t know, I just vibe with it and Grant is an amazing performer. 5. Florida: Another Latin song and is also really fun. And then the rest without any explanations cause I don’t got time for that 6. New York 7. Massachusetts 8. Georgia 9. New Jersey 10. Wisconsin 11. California 12. Delaware 13. Louisiana 14. Hawaii 15. Oklahoma is definitely the strongest of your top five so I'm glad that you have it at the top. The actual song really isn't that bad. The lyrics are pretty clever and it flows quite well. Obviously, the performance is better than the song and she is singing it more than some other artists are (still far too much backing track for me in a song contest but it's not THAT bad) so yeah, I'd actually be ok with her winning. You have my bottom three in your top five BUT I do actually really like Florida. That one is fun and has the vibe of being a more professional looking version of what Ireland are going for in ESC this year. I do like it!

Writing comments is one of those things that can go both ways. I enjoy sharing my opinions about the songs but at the same time, I do kinda hate coming back to videos from like 2-3 years ago and cringe at how much my opinion of something has chanced. Editing-wise, it's always a lot of work to do a new video so sometimes, they just stay out there. XD I haven't watched today's show yet but I did see the jury results and yay for Washington. Juries have some taste. Don't know if the public will go for it enough to win but it should definitely be there.

I know my take on American music is probably not the same as much Eurovision fans (I have a lot more taste for country music and any music with its origins in Motown) so I probably have some underrated entries quite high in my top. Definitely see Washington as that Cesar Sampson-style jury pleaser. I don't know if it *would* win Eurovision this year but it's the only song that I think would be competitive to that level.

bit of a (really) late reply, but the jury results from both semi-finals definitely confirm its huge jury appeal (unless tennessee beats them in the final, which isnt that unlikely). i was admittedely a bit skeptical on allen's chances of winning, but the public vote doesn't seem to agree with the jury choices at all (especially colorado in both its heat and semi-final), so lets hope the unknown public result favors him in the end!

Nevada and Georgia have both moved up in my list. Georgia, in particular, in the studio is really good, especially without the revised, family-friendly lyrics. But yeah, that Alabama choice. My top 10 in no order: Georgia ( my winner ) Arkansas Kansas Maryland Florida New Jersey Oklahoma Alabama California Nevada Honorable mentions: Virginia, Connecticut, Utah, Delaware, New York I was really surprised by the quality of the songs. I like around 20-25 songs. If this is an NF, which NF you think would be comparable to this? How do you feel about the show's production? The first 3 episodes had me rolled my eyes at how loud the backing tracks were. It was so loud that sometimes i wonder how Wonderland and Loko would sound like if the backing track wasn't as loud. The juries though, are close to Romania and Germany's level of bad. They're not as corrupted but they were pretty predictable. I watched the recap before watching the performance but i could already tell who would win and who would flop ( Except for heat 5, Michigan winning was a surprise to me ). Overall, this was a great show. If this somehow get a season 2, change the juries please. P.S: Kelly and Snoop make me feel like i was watching Ireland's NF again. I would like to have such a support in my life like them to the participants :)

In terms of production, I definitely can see the Melodifestivalen influence on this show (and not just because of Bjorkman) but there are a few songs that literally could've been used there and also, the choreography in some of the routines and the use of the backing tracks do scream a bit of Scandi NF to me. I don't how much those backing tracks are a production issue or whether they are specifically designed to cover up some of the weaker vocalists. Melodifestivalen was going this way under Bjorkman before he left and honestly, the live vocals there were noticeable clearer (and containing more miscues) than usual this year. I am also liking about 25 songs, too. There's different tiers to that and there are some outside that top 25 that grow on me and have a place on my playlist for a mood but more importantly, there's probably only 10-11 songs that I don't like, so it's quite an easy listen. One of the really stupid things they did on this show was that interview with the juror in episode five. He made it clear that the jurors aren't voting with any criteria to follow and makes the whole thing look incredibly unprofessional. Saying that you vote with your heart and things of that ilk don't sit well when you're representing the music industry as a professional. I have absolutely loved Kelly Clarkson in this role btw. She reminds me of Jennifer Aniston's character in "The Morning Show", a show that Kelly was actually a guest star on, so it might not be an accident. She's doing such a good job that Snoop is just free to hmm....be Snoop. XD

Honestly this is so bad, I do not have a single favourite... We have the same bottom 2 (for once) and here are the only good songs imo with my """"favourites"""' being in bold Georgia *Connecticut* (unpopular opinion because it's cheesy but I enjoy it) *Texas* (it's at least catchy, but yeah that "bad boy" performance is really not for me) Missouri Rhode Island New Jersey Oklahoma *Washington* (may be my winner)

I'm seeing some love for New Jersey so far in these comments and I'm happy about that. It didn't seem to be getting much of it on social media or on the show itself and it really is a well put-together song. Also, glad to see Washington up there. Surprised you think the show has been bad though. I really went in with *no* expectations and have been pleasantly surprised.

As much as I'm enjoying it, I'm understanding why the ratings aren't there. It doesn't feel particularly well planned-out. Each week, they're taking a different approach to revealing the votes. The juries seem to have a type of music in mind that they're looking for each time, too. I don't actually know what the show is looking for...but I'll save my full judgement until the show is over and I go back through it. Maybe once I see the winner, I'll understand it all a bit better.

It's quite interesting as a Eurovision fan to see what other Eurovision fans make of American music. It's the biggest music industry in the world yet even though we sometimes allude to it in our Eurovision rankings etc, we rarely put our opinions about it directly out there. I am a *huge* fan of country music and think it's the one genre in ASC that has been represented with some really fine examples of said genre. "Right In The Middle" is literally as good as you're going to get and it deserves to do really well in this contest. :3

I think a lot of people are making the mistake of comparing it to Eurovision, when a national final comparison would be more apt. American music does have a variety of genres but you're not going to get as big a contrast as something like Spain-Moldova in Eurovision this year. Largely, a lot of the songs are going to have similarities and especially, similar levels of production. I hope it sticks around for a couple of years and gets better. It's definitely not there yet but it is already an entertaining slick of television.

I gotta be honest, this show was truly awful. I think my entire bottom 10 are at the level of my eurovision last, there’s only around 11 songs I wouldn’t call bad, and I enjoy genuinely like three songs. Maryland is a good bop that I will listen to a few times, Virginia is pretty standard R&B but R&B is what got me into music in 2018 so I dig, and Nevada is genuinely great. But outside of those three it’s very rough.

I didn't really break it down during the video but I really, really like all of my top seven (all of them would be in my Eurovision top 20 if they were competing), after that, I'm liking things down to probably about number 17 or number 18 (thinking they'd do quite well, too). The bottom fourteen in my list would probably be in my bottom five in actual Eurovision. I suppose that doesn't sound too good but I'm trying to get away from thinking of this as a substitution for Eurovision and more like a national final. If that were the case, and I compared this show to say, Melodifestivalen or MGP, then it's probably doing alright.

I did not expect to actually enjoy watching the show as much as I have done. Kelly Clarkson has been brilliant and Snoop has been surprisingly Ok. I particularly like the little packages that they do before each song. I'm not really into American things much so it's been nice to learn about the states etc. I don't know if it's rigged or whether it's just very much geared towards certain outcomes. Melodifestivalen under Bjorkman was always that way anyway.
