ENGLISH EUROVISION FAN REACTS TO AMERICAN SONG CONTEST SEMI-FINAL 1

#AMERICANSONGCONTEST #ASC #NBC
American Song Contest has officially begun! Based on the Eurovision Song Contest. It sees all 50 U.S. states, five territories, and Washington, D.C. compete for the title of Best Original Song. The contest takes place between March 21 and May 9, 2022, and airs on NBC. The show is hosted by Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson.
As a HUGE Eurovision fan, I thought we would react to the competition, with my American husband, today we looked at Semi-final 1.

It's super nice of AleXa to let ASC perform at her concert every week. Her shoulders must be tired from carrying the entire contest.

Had it not been for Omicron, it might've been possible as a semifinal interval act. Omicron delayed the ASC by four weeks. As it is, AleXa is supposed to appear at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, ruling out the ESC final on Saturday. She's appearing at the BBMAs because she won, with 97% of the maximum public vote points.

If you are wondering why Alexa scored so low in the jury votes, the top 4 were all jury qualifiers so they were already high on their rankings. So I think 5th place considering that is pretty good

That seemed a tad unfair to all the jury picks, frontloading them into one semifinal. It was kind of harsh on Hueston and Ada Leann because they weren't saved by the public vote like they perhaps could've been had one or both been in the other semi. Or, maybe not, as the jury kind of got overruled by the public in semi 2, as well. About the only thing that the public and jury could agree on was that Jordan Smith was third-best overall. But what did the jury have against Riker Lynch? Sixth in round one and dead last in the semi and final...what was that about?

@@SWalkerTTU Yeah, I would have preferred if they atleast put one other jury qualifier in semi 2. By putting almost all of them in semi 1 they basically guaranteed that Tennessee would qualify in semi 2. As for Riker Lynch, idk. I was personally not a fan of his song but it seemed like the jury slaughtered any goofy song, Wyoming as well

I’ve definitely been enjoying the American Song Contest! I liked that you both discussed how amazing the staging is. I’ve tried explaining to some other Eurovision fans that in the US we simply don’t have a show that does that. American Idol, The Voice, The Masked Singer, etc all just use the same stage and staging and really it’s only some minor details with dancers and a few lights, etc that changes. This level of staging is usually reserved for award shows or special live on tv concert shows (some New Year’s Eve tv specials , 4th of July tv specials, etc). And even then these still go way beyond those. I mean, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as an LED stage until I saw Eurovision! So yes, I’m enjoying the show and hoping NBC keeps with it, makes some minor reforms here and there to help boost it (because anyone I’ve talked to about it that didn’t know it was a thing suddenly got very interested....especially younger folks where I live who are residing here for university or the military as it’s a way to root for their home states/territories while being away). Glad you’re getting to enjoy it! If the winning location is the site of where the next contest is held (if that’s what NBC decides to do), then I expect that a lot more of the states/territories/DC tourist bureaus might take an active interest in helping promote the show. Every state/territory/DC is always looking for ways to boost tourism to their areas. The states/territories chambers of commerce would likely also been keen at getting involved as more people visiting a state/territory is a boom for the local economy. My hometown has certainly never denied any national event thingy from happening here (be it tv or social media related....city even set up a banner for some KZread car rally thing that was popular many years ago whenever they asked if they could have the historic downtown be a check point in the national race....city still uses the poles it set up to put up other banners downtown for other celebrations and holidays year round, so win-win for everyone) and I can’t think of any place in my state (Oklahoma) that has either (Oklahoma City has its new convention center, it’s beautiful civic center, a host of other venues, and of course it has the big arena where the NBA’s Thunder play, Tulsa and other cities (including mine) have arenas and event centers that could host the event (depending on what the crowd sizes are expected to be). Heck, they just finished and opened a hotel right next to the event center in my city. Due to the pandemic stopping work on it, it took longer than expected, but it’s finally done and open. So long as the event next year doesn’t happen as the same time the college baseball world series occurs it shouldn’t be a problem (as that event uses the ballpark across the street from the event center and the locations share parking lots...but it hasn’t been an issue so far). If they want fireworks there’s a local fireworks company that can provide them and the city’s fire department is great at helping setting up safe locations to shoot off the fireworks (the city shoots of fireworks downtown on a Black Friday event at night as well as at the ball park on the 4th of July and at the end of the college world series championship game; the city also shoots off fireworks at opening night at the raceway and at a park on the 4th of July...sometimes they have a thing in the summer called Summer Family Night where a big screen is put up on the courthouse lawn and families bring blankets and watch animated movies or the ballpark will do it using their big screen...when it’s at the ballpark there’s sometimes fireworks after). My point is my little city of 51,000 is likely just like any other city of similar size or bigger in the US and would love having an audience of people coming for eight weeks to their city for a tv show. I mean, I don’t remember any of the cities turning away American Idol auditions whenever they’ve come to their cities. I mean, provided the show is paid for by its producers/production company and the local governments and businesses just have to give incentives, perks, etc there’s definitely a way for NBC to form partnerships if they want to (not to mention it could be a boon to the various local NBC broadcast affiliates and associations in the state/territory which is way more than they really get from other tv shows). At least you’re able to watch the ASC final! I know originally NBC had planned to start airing ASC a month earlier than it did. Which means that originally the ASC final would’ve been at the end of April and then Eurovision would be in early May. However due to CoVid restrictions concerns they postponed it by a month and that put it so the final is literally the day before the first semifinal in Eurovision. I’m not complaining! It’s been a lot to follow trying to keep up with Eurovision news while watching and voting in the ASC (I still don’t fully understand how Eurovision fans vote for the songs every year, it can be so hard to choose and now I’m doing it for ASC and I’m just like “Yes! Maybe? Maybe? Yes! Oh it does have that part I really like, though? Oh but the staging was really neat?Yes!” in my head as I’m figuring out my votes! I think all you longtime Eurovision fans are gonna have to teach us Americans (especially American Eurovision fans who never gave voting any thought since you know we can’t do that in Eurovision so we got to just be casual observers of the excellent shows) how you figured out how to find songs to vote for. In the past in some fan groups I’ve been told a few of people’s theories. I’ve definitely used the “well just be a good neighbor” rule a Eurovision fan told me once was their go to strategy first and then voting the rest of their points to the song that was stuck in their head when voting started. Not a bad strategy, but based on what others have told me in the past whenever I’ve commented on how impressed I am that you all vote on these (and can’t just give votes to them all), I know there’s definitely got to be some other voting strategies. Again, this is different for US tv. These are original new songs rather than just people singing covers of songs we already know and so we’re just judging them on their voices. It’s about the songs and the performances, too, not just the voices. So yeah, I could definitely use some advice on voting. My sister, niece, mom, and I watch the show each week. That’s four generations (sister: Millennial; niece: GenZ; mom: Boomer; me: GenX) actually watching something together. Usually the only stuff we all watch together is awards shows, political debates, the political conventions, the Olympics, and the weather. So it’s fun to sit, watch, and discuss something on tv that’s not super serious. It’s music and music is enjoyable on so many levels! And after not having live music for what feels like a zillion years, it’s fun to see live performances happening on stage (and doesn’t hurt that this summer between my sister and I we’ve been able to make it so my niece gets to go to three concerts! 2020 was her 16th birthday and so much got cancelled that in a way we’re just trying to ensure she gets to go to as many concerts as we had by the time we were her age now....even if they’re literally all in one year now! LOL...there might be more too as some ASC performers have announced US tours, too, so definitely looking into going to any if they’re close enough [gas prices are definitely not helping]). Great video! Glad to see you both back again making videos! As much as I adore Noosh on her own, I also adore the two of you together sharing your thoughts and opinions! And Michigan is a great state! I have a friend from college who is a virologist that was born and raised in Michigan and I’ve met plenty of other great folk from there, too, over the years! Including the guy I bought my very first car from (super nice guy who was friends with my dad). Also got a car wreck on the interstate once. I was in the passing lane and the other vehicle didn’t see me and switched lanes and we collided. No major damages or injury. The wife was from Minnesota and her husband was from Michigan (he was driving the moving truck which was several cars ahead of her and she said she saw him up ahead move back over and was afraid she was falling behind in following him and just forgot to look before changing lanes). They were both really nice people and I was glad they were okay. They were moving to Dallas and since I had been there and had family living in the area they were moving to at the time I talked with them about it while the first responders got our cars out of the center median and did all the necessary medical checks, etc. I remember they thanked me for not being a jerk about the crash. I remember he said that was what he was most worried about. I don’t know why I’d be a jerk to anyone. My car barely got any damage, just a cracked plastic part on the headlight area and some minor scratches which her car and mine were the same color do you couldn’t really tell unless you got really close to it (whereas she had some dents and a back door window was shattered), no one was hurt, and they seemed a lot more shaken up by it than I did so I wanted to make them feel at ease since I know the responders would need to talk to them without overly anxious minds (have family, friends, and even some ex-boyfriends who’ve been first responders so I’ve heard stories about how things can go). So yeah, you’re surrounded by some good folks up there in Michigan!

Since you have been out of the loop for a while, I don't know if you know that how they choose who goes on to the final is different than the heats. In the semis' one song will be chosen by the jury's to advance, while the other 4 will be picked by the public. The heats had it where the scores of the jury's and the public were combined and that's how they chose who advanced to the semi-finals. So while Allen Stone won the jury vote to move on, someone who was placed low by the jury ( like Wyoming) can move on the the finals by the public vote. I'm also very happy that Allen got the jury win, because I really want Alabama, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Rhode Island to move on. These 5 are my top 5 of semi-final 1 and i think they can advance via the public.

Kentucky Fried Chicken does come from Kentucky. The founder of KFC, Harland Sanders, was made a Kentucky Colonel in 1936 and again in 1950, thus the sobriquet "Colonel Sanders". "Kentucky Colonel" is an honorary title roughly equivalent to KBE or DBE in England, though perhaps awarded a bit more liberally; it once granted the right to raise a company of militia, but now you can get it for winning "The Voice" as Jordan Smith did (so one could address him as "Colonel Smith").
