really showed the catastrophe of Bjorkman's vision (even the fact they're allowing him to make the ESC running order less and less random over the years is just...UH (that and backing vocals allowed to not be live (i still think there should be live vocals for everyone, maybe allowing a 50% "sound volume" for pre-recorded stuff but still)). As well as not enough qualifiers per show in the first phase , making the show lose songs such as The Crystal Method "Watch Me Now" for example (but i guess they really wanted 4 qualifiers per show again as a way to make the first phase very Melodifestivalen (it was basically Melodifestivalen but with 2 semis instead of a Second chance show) But they made it like a reality show , i actually didn't watch the contest the intended way but instead selected a few songs to actually watch (i forgot exactly how i selected them but it was partially based on their jury results during the show and quickly listening to a few seconds of each song to determine if i was interested in hearing more or not) and then watched all of their performances in a row with some unrelated videos in between each artist to give me a break lol (and if a song qualified to the final, i would watch their 3 different performances in a row (with some interesting staging changes sometimes)... and to be honest it was enjoyable that way (basically made myself a 20 or so final show (though with more than 20 performances obv because some songs had several performances lol))

Unpopular opinion : I think AleXa should've been sent to compete in ESC 2022 as USA's one-off participation in Eurovision. Would be interesting to see how the voting in ESC 2022 would've turned out if AleXa was included considering the Kpop fandom would've voted for her like crazy.

If the US were to join Eurovision this would be a really interesting national selection where they get 1 song from each territory and then send out the winner. I would honestly not be mad to see the US join Eurovision since they could bring A LOT of money meaning we would see the return of multiple other countries. Additionally they would probably become a part of the big 5 meaning that they won’t take a spot from someone else in the semi and it would probably make it more enticing for established artists

I’m still listening to many of these songs and many of the new songs the artists have released since then. And being from Oklahoma I did go to her homecoming concert which was amazing as she got to talk with fans, some of her former classmates and friends got to come and see her, and she even brought her parents up on stage, and she shared a lot about her story. I missed her concert earlier this year in Tulsa (it was just poor timing as it conflicted with a family thing otherwise I would’ve gone). Grant Knoche has released several songs that have ended up being in my Apple Music replay or KZread Rewind lists. While I generally enjoyed the show, it really wasn’t marketed well a lot of friends, coworkers, etc didn’t know anything about it until I mentioned it and then since it got delayed and started later than originally planned it was competing with American Idol. I kinda think it would have done better if it had just been like Eurovision and been a week long show and there had been hype on local tv, local radio, local newspapers/magazines, and small pre-parties in big cities in each state with various artists performing their songs as part of the marketing prior to the start of the show. A LOT of people I know who watched it didn’t watch it live, but watched American Idol live first and then watched ASC after. As one friend put it: “I don’t feel like it’s a show I have to watch live so I’ll watch it later.” That’s where I think it being marketed as a special annual event similar to Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, CMAs, Superbowl, etc would have probably gotten more people to tune in instead of marketing it as just another competition tv show. ON THE PLUS SIDE a lot of friends and family who hadn’t taken much interest in Eurovision suddenly were asking me questions about it (since they know I love Eurovision) and since ASC ended the Monday right before Eurovision’s first semifinal in Tuesday, I had a lot more folks watching with me that year on Tuesday and many of them have continued to be interested in Eurovision (though still not at the same level I am). So between the Eurovision movie on Netflix in 2020 and ASC the two have helped me get more of my fellow Americans into Eurovision and so I do have a lot appreciate for the show for that! I do worry that now that many of them have seen Eurovision that if there’s another American Song Contest that whomever produces that is going to have to step up their game on production value, but I do still have some friends who haven’t gotten into Eurovision (they at least let me gibberjabber about it, though, so that’s a start) so I’d probably just try and get them to watch the next ASC if there was one in hopes of repeating the process that it might get them into wanting to watch Eurovision. 😊 Thanks for making and sharing this video! It was fun to see clips of the live performances again! Kinda wish Peacock hadn’t removed all the shows. I enjoyed rewatching them, but they remove each year’s Eurovision ones, too, to make room for the newest year as it approaches so at the time they removed the ASC episodes I thought it was a positive sign, but it’s been two years and I think that it might be a dead project. Unless Disney decides to revive it like it did American Idol (though then that means they’d find a way to squeeze Disney-something into the contest since that’s what they do with their other shows; examples: Dancing With The Stars and American Idol both have Disney themed episodes where the participants sing/dance Disney songs).

As an American, I can tell you right now that none of these artists really made it big after the show. Nobody got to experience fame as Eurovision artists do. Michael Bolton from Conneticut doesn't count since he was already a well known musician entering into the contest. Not even Alexis from Oklahoma was heard of after the show, and she won the contest. It was also filled with commercials, like, more than what is usual in American TV. So you'd lose interest pretty quickly, if the music selections weren't already doing that. I guess the best thing about the contest for me were the hosts, Kelly Clarkson and Snoop Dog, and my state's entry, Arizona. Not a winning song, but it represents our state quite well

Coming from an American who voted heavily in this, this was trash and so were most of the songs. The show had no idea what to do at the beginning and by the time the show figured it out a couple of episodes in the viewers dropped off so much it lost it's chance to be a success. 2 years later there are only 22 songs I wouldn't mind if it came up on Spotify radio and 8 songs I actually like and hold up really well for me still. No one needed to be reminded of this. I could have lived the rest of my life not thinking about this show and had no effect on my life positivly or neagtivly. What I find interesting is Eurovision fans in other countries cared a lot more then people in the US did for this show. I could have seen a scenario where the show could have worked if the first episode hadn't been a terrible mess and had some better songs especially in the heats 3-5. The first episode had the best songs but the worst exuction of the sound mixing for the songs. Once they managed to get that all in check 2 episodes later the songs got so bad that the viewers didn't want to return. I played my sister some of the songs when she got home from collage after all the songs were out and she couldn't stand them. There should have been at least one hit with the winner Wonderland. It just shipped out to radio as the winner and it had a ton of buzz being a K-Pop song in the contest.

I've been following Eurovision more or less consistently since 2018 and didn't even find out it existed until a year after it happened. No advertising whatsoever, which is strange since I've seen advertisements for Eurovision here since NBC, the same broadcaster as the American song contest, started streaming it on Peacock. It also doesn't help that the vast majority of the songs were meh at most, I have to agree with your top 2, they were the extremely obvious winners with them being wayyyyyy better than all of the others. Them along with Nevada, New York, and Washington (Who were all extremely robbed) are the only songs I consider listening to again if I'm bored.

Many of you have your views on why this was a catastrophe and I agree with many things, but in the end I think the main reason this flopped so hard is that I don’t like or remember any of the songs.

Most of them are good singers, but the contest misses the spark of Eurovision, theres not much diversity with each songs. There's no crazy, silly songs that make Eurovision, plus having a country to sing in their own language and style makes the song stand out. Which the American song contest struggles at.

Alexa was literally the only song worthy of the win... BUT what was even the point of the show? She won...then didnt even get the piss weak prize she was supposed to get. The song could have been a hit too if it was given any promo at all. :/

One of the reasons it was so bad was the 100+ backup dancers for each song. Like why sooo many. That and the cultural and the shameless funny elements were just not there. Sadly this was not unexpected lol.

Or because the competition was 8 weeks long. There was over a month between the first qualifier and the semi finals. Along with that, if your state was in qualifier 5 you had to wait 5 weeks just to see your state perform.

Never heard of this contest before I watched this video, but like nearly no song stood out to me. These are just short extracts so it's hard to tell, but still, it looks repetitive both sonically and visually for the most of it I think, no wonder it flopped. I'm definitely biased though.
