The difference being, unlike most historical empires the British at the peak of their power then decided to become a far more ethical force than any other empire before it and set the stage for the most free, safe, stable and by all measures the most successful hegemony ever seen, also known as “the west.” Obviously it’s far from perfect, but the last century of full of political experiments that cost hundreds of millions of lives that were just a peak at what could have been without the limiting force from expansion of English common law across the west

Specifically that it was never legal here, we weren’t the biggest traders and not only were we the first nation in history to see the light and ban the trading of slaves on moral grounds, we spent immense amount of blood and treasure (which we didn’t even pay off until 2015) to blockade the Atlantic slave trade and force every country within our reach to stop trading in humans. When did the UK abolish slavery? Legislation was finally passed in both the Commons and the Lords which brought an end to Britain's involvement in the trade. The bill received royal assent in March and the trade was made illegal from 1 May 1807. It was now against the law for any British ship or British subject to trade in enslaved people

Slavery was actually made illegal in the United Kingdom in 1086 by William the conqueror but it was never challenged in court until the 1800s, the British legal system requires that are low be challenged in a court of law in order for it to become generally accepted and then receives royal approval which is why it was 700 years before it actually became empirical law but it had been banned since 1086, and confirmed by the church synod in 1103. On top of that British Nations were constantly raided by the Irish and the Moores to take people for sale in to the North African and Mediterranean and Byzantine slave trade, the British people have always been the subject of slavery we were made slaves by the Romans the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, and the Irish and the Moores until we put an end to it under William the conqueror.

In my opinion, Britain's empire achieved far more positives than negatives. Yes, the slave trade was a big negative but it was Britain that stopped it globally, saving millions of more lives. I was not surprised that Germany wasnt on that list.. Although I would personally put Germany as higher in my 'hate' category. There seems to be always a huge remembrance of the 1st/2nd World wars & what nazi Germany did to millions of People, yet no dislike is banded about online concerning that at Germany today? She bombed many nations & put millions to death in concentration camps. Threatening the very way of Life the British gave the Globe, including the Modern Democracy the World enjoys today. The most active European nation in the trans-Atlantic slave trade was Portugal, which used the forced labor of Africans in their Latin American colonies in present-day Brazil. Almost 3.9 million enslaved Africans were forced to embark on Portuguese ships. Present-day Brazil received around 3.2 of them, making it the country in the Americas where most enslaved people arrived during the period. British ships also carried upwards of 3 million Africans forcefully removed from the continent, mostly to the Caribbean, the United States and the Guyanas. French ships carried 1.3 million enslaved Africans.

In 1865, the United States ratified the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which banned slavery and involuntary servitude "except as punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted", providing a legal basis for slavery, now referred to as penal labor, to continue in the country. Historically, this led to the system of convict leasing which still primarily affects African-Americans. The Prison Policy Initiative, an American criminal justice think tank, cites the 2020 US prison population at being 2.3 million individuals, and nearly all able-bodied inmates work in some fashion. In Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Arkansas, prisoners are not paid at all for their work. In other states, prisoners are paid between $0.12 and $1.15 per hour.

Britain or the UK was one of the first to use slaves? Before the Greeks, Romans, Carthage, Egyptians China, I could go on! England came to eminence in the 16th century. By the year 1807, it ceased trading in slaves and further stopped slavery everywhere it found it, stopping ships and freeing slaves. Causing a skirmish later with the US in 1812! The other one pushed is the British love of rule Britannia. This song came about in the 18th century when British navy ships chased North African corsairs who were enslaving "white" people taken from villages on the coast and from ships, selling them in the slave markets in their native lands. This because of the weakness of the navy during the English civil war, ending around 1670, the navy being then built up by Cromwell? By the way the slaver pirates flew a red flag, as had the Templars. This became the "jolly Roger" a corruption of le Jolie Rouge. False hatred by fake news, reinforced by haters, jealous of our history. The lies of flies!

But you are so right - it was England and the English ruling classes that were so bad back then. Scotland, Wales and Ireland really had nothing to do with all that 'world dominance' thing and have never had the reputation for arrogance that the English were so proud of. In fact, the Scots and the Irish were frequently also VICTIMS of the English, and many of them still hate the English because of that. Mr Briggs has definately got this one very wrong, to tar them all with the same brush.
