There must be heavy copyright with Porridge, because no-one seems to be reacting to it other than to very short one-off clips. A shame, because it's one of the greatest by far.

Being able to pause TV is such a blessing, we used to sit down as a family to watch this in the 70s and by the time everyone had finished laughing we'd missed half of the episode.

This show was like lightening in a bottle, perfect cast, perfect writing.

Rising Damp was genius, highly intelligent, well written & beautifully acted. The 70's in Britain was a wash of fabulous comedies.

Dude, you make my day. You have such an uninhibited joy when you laugh. Also you prove that American and British humour is not so different. Of course there are specific references that you won't know, but the humour clearly translates. Your reaction to "I know where the Himalayas are..." is priceless.

I have seen all these shows so many times and still laugh every single time. It's a perfect comedy, as you say - such great writing.

This is the only time that Rigsby defends Alan.

Series 2 is where Rising Damp starts to hit top form. Series 1 is pretty good but the programme's on another level from here on in. My favourite episode is Stage Struck with Peter Bowles in Series 3. One of the all-time great sitcoms.

Best British comedy ever, Leonard Rossiter is just pure genius as Rigsby and it gets better.

Next you need the box set of Porridge Ronnie Barker and rising Damps Richard Beckinsale

Got to love the moment when Rigsby defends one of the boys. The disfunctional family may argue a lot but if anyone else picks a fight, they be in big trouble.

I dunno if anyone has recommended it previously but might enjoy a show called; Goodnight Sweetheart. -Sitcom about a TV repair man who travels back in time to the 1940s and lives a double life. Well written and really funny.

Always loved rising damp, I saw reruns as it started before I was born. Always made me laugh, still does, man my ribs hurt from laughing so hard & that Himalayan joke lol, that always gets me every time.👌😂😂😂

Great to see you reacting again to Rising Damp, even if it is a slightly truncated version. Your reaction to Alan's "Himalayas" quip was hilarious in its own right! The writer of the series, Eric Chappell, died in April of this year at the age of 88. In my opinion he is a genius of British comedy but he tends to get overlooked, possibly because he worked mostly for the ITV channels (commercial) rather than the BBC. His output, mostly in the 70s, 80s and early 90s was enormous. Eleven different sitcoms, usually 3 or 4 series each. Rising Damp was the jewel in his crown of course but some of the others, eg Only When I Laugh, Duty Free and Home To Roost, are not far behind in quality.

Yes,sadly Richard Beckinsale had died the year before,so they replaced him with a new character,although Alan is briefly referenced.

So many references to 70s England, must be tough if you're unaccustomed to them. Also, a cup of tea really is a British trope, doesn't matter what sort of tragedy has occurred, the first action is to put the kettle on, even true in the army

Eclectic i have NEVER laughed so much watching you taking a look at a British series so much. The tears where RUNNING down my face as you where laughing at Rising Damp which i loved to watch over here in the U.K.

Rigsby was a character you ought to hate but Leonard Rossiter’s magnificent performance made him somewhat lovable.

The 1970's was a Golden period for British comedy, from The Good Life, Fawlty Towers, Are you being Served, Ever decreasing circles, George and Mildred, Man About the House. Quality writing, with peerless comic actors. The interesting thing about Leonard Rossitor was he was an absolute perfectionist and hard to work with, quite intimidating, but the results were outstanding

When I left home when I was 21 I had lots of jokes in the job i was leaving about 'If your landlord in London is like Rigsby.. phone us and we'll come and get you and bring you home again.' lol.. He wasn;t - he was a right twit but not like Rigsby. lol.

This was a good episode but wait until you see the "bump in the dark" one. "Quite firm".

Wait till you see the one, where Miss Jones tells Rigsby to extinguish his stick. 🤪🤪

Richard Beckinsale was actress Kate Beckinsale’s (Underworld/Van Helsing) father, who sadly died in 1979. He was only 31 and was in lots of tv shows, Porridge, Going Straight, The Lovers. He was so funny without even trying and it broke a lot of hearts when he died!

I had a crush on when I was at school when he was The Lovers.. 'Percy filth!' .. lol Yes.. I remember when he died - far far too young and let Kate Beckinsale and her Mother, both so young as well.

This has to be one of the all time great sitcoms to come from 70s great Britain , I loved it as a kid and still love it when I watch it now . It wouldn't surprise me if some snowflake think the people who enjoy the show are racists , mind you it's not like snowflakes and their kind are known for having a sense of humour . So glad you have found the show. Don't waste your time with the movie , it's just all the best lines of all the shoes put into one film , the young white lad died shortly before the film was made , it doesn't work without him , Richard beckinsdale , at least I think that was his name .

I think there's a documentary somewhere on 'KZread with interviews of the makers. The show writer said he didn't know how to write for a woman so asked Miss Ruth Jones, Frances de la Tour, to improvise which she did brilliantly. :D
