    Oxford is a small city and contains the University within it. The University consists of multiple buildings located throughout the city. I go to Oxford often as I like to shop there and it's less than 30 miles from where I live, always busy and lively! There is a lovely Botanic Garden that I like to visit, which belongs to the University and is older than Kew Gardens - it's a lovely quiet oasis in the city.

    I went to Oxford University, but I failed during my course! ( I had a hidden problem, not understood back then in the 1970s, dyspraxia.) Even so, the Colleges are often very beautiful and historic, and it remains a precious memory. This man does quite a good summing-up of Oxford. My college, Merton (founded 1264) has the oldest purpose -built college buildings in the world, some dating to 1283. A weird fact about Christ Church is that it is both a College and a Cathedral, and contains a mediaeval Cathedral! You learn in a College, but the University examines you. Probably the most important thing about the Colleges is that they're really quite socialist in structure! They are collectives, and the Fellows of each College ( the senior scholars) elect the new Fellows. All the Fellows from all the Colleges form Congregation, which has quite a lot of power in the running of the University. Thus the University is not dominated by big corporate interests. This is probably why the academic standard is so good; nobody tells the Fellows what to think. When I was there one was encouraged to have one's own point of view. You shouldn't refer to Oxford 'students '. If they haven't got a degree, they are 'undergraduates'. During term things are very pressurised, because the standards are so high. Punting is harder than it looks. The pole is quite substantial. It can get stuck on the bottom of the river, but worse, it can stuck in a tree when you're not looking up, and you get yanked out and dumped in the river!

    I’m Australian but my grandparents were English and met when my grandmother and her sister Evelyn were punting. Evelyn got the punt pole stuck in the mud and the boat drifted away from it. This is around 1913 just before WW1 in 1914. Fashions for women were more restrictive so they were stuck in this boat in long skirts, being non-swimmers, all they could do was call out for help. And on the riverbank my grandfather and his brother were picnicking. Heroically the two young men dived in and swam to the rescue! The rest is history. And that is how I got here !

    One of the blessings of being or having been a student in Britain - as in other European and some Asian countries - is the mix of ancient and modern which suffuses our daily lives. My youngest, in Year 11 in senior school in England, is a pupil at a school founded in 909, yet the band with which he plays has the use of a state of the art recording suite, and his physics classroom has desks which are interactive with the digital class display surfaces. When I began pre-prep in London in the 1950s, I had an inkwell on my desk and I wrote using a nib and blotter. Today, my grandsons only use a fountain pen for English class and for some classes exclusively use their tablets. If this can happen in just 60 years, think what changes have been wraught in 1200 years!

    As a european it took quite some time to figure out that harvard wasn't a town. Around here towns have universities, which may be named (here in germany usually after famous people, founders, benefactors, alumni), but are ultimatly known as the "University of $town" Unless they are very big towns and have more than one. As a non native english speaker I still struggle to comprehend 50 separate colleges (which are in itself akin to universities, right?) making up the University of oxford...

    The students at all the colleges study the same courses, together. I did Biology and I had lectures and practical classes with every Biology student from every college. I had most tutorials (small grouo classes. 2-4 students) in my colleges, or sometimes in one of the science departments (Zoology, anatomy, physiology etc). I lived in my college, but of course could socialise at all of the others. Mostly the college is a bit like a really glorified "dorm" in the US.

    Most European universities are built in the city and the colleges are located all around the city. For example, I'm Croatian and I'm a student at the University of Zagreb, with Zagreb being the capital of my country. I study at the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science that's located on the hill above the main city square, but my colleagues at the Faculty of Social Sciences have their building on the other side of the city. But we all study at the University of Zagreb. So it's a bit different from American universities. There are also a bunch of other smaller education institutions in the city, but the main university is the largest. It was founded in 1669 so it's over a 100 years older than the US. There's a lot of history here, and I really appreciate you trying to learn more about it.

    "Punting" is what you do in a 'punt'; a a flat-bottomed boat with a square-cut bow developed for use on small shallow rivers, lakes or other waters. It can be propelled with long wooden poles pushed against the river bottom or with paddles. Much associated with Oxford and Cambridge; which are both very old established cities with famous collegiate universities; they aren't universities thet were built in the middle of nowhere. Oxford University comprises 44 colleges and Cambridge has 31.

    Think of this contradiction: we as a society (irrespective of the country) are far richer today. Yet nothing like this could be built now. Nobody would ever approve the horrendous budget for it. We're building magnificent stuff today too, but how many of them will stand for centuries, how many of them will attract hundreds of thousands of tourists in the future to marvel at our achievements and history? If you want to see something even mildly similar to this in the USA I would suggest Notre Dame University in South Bend IN. My wife did her post-doctoral fellowship there so I've seen every part of it. Its architecture clearly imitates this sort of old Anglo-saxon style even if it doesn't come anywhere near the magnificence or the historic significance of Oxford.

    *Always* fortified, really? Then I learned something new. In my language we have slott, kastell, palats, borg, and fort. Only the last two are always fortified here, i.e. more or less per definition.

  • @tubekulose

    @tubekulose

    @@herrbonk3635 That's convenient. The German terms are pretty much the same: Schloss, Kastell, Palast, Burg, Fort. Both "Schloss" and "Palast" mean a magnificent mansion, whereas the words "Kastell", "Burg" and "Fort" discribe a fortress (Festung). But I might have been mistaken in my first comment and maybe the terms "castle" and "palace" are interchangeable in English. In German they are not. Thank you for the brief Swedish lesson and best regards from Austria!

    @@tubekulose you weren't mistaken, "castle" is a fortification and "palace" is a large, ornate residence. Castles may also be occupied as homes but they are always fortifications. English has a cognate of "Burg" and "borg", namely "borough" which means a town or city historically one with walls but later in history relaxing to just mean town or city. If "slott" and "Schloss" are not fortified, the closest analogy in English would be "mansion", a grand house that isn't fortified (they still sometimes have some defensive features), somewhat akin to French "château".

    @@alexmckee4683 Thank you very much for your comment and the explanation of the origins of the word "borough"! And yes, in French a "château" without a specifying adjective would be a grand house. Talking about a castle you would use the term ""château fort".

    Most of the older UK universities share the name of the town or city their main campuses lie within, of which Oxford, Cambridge, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh and St Andrews are examples. There are relatively few universities that are mostly all on the same campus in the UK, and of those that are, the majority were founded during the 1960s. Loughborough, Keele and Stirling are examples of these. Since the 1980s, a number of what were Further Education Colleges have been upgraded and reclassified as universities. As many of these are situated in cities such as Bristol, that already had a university of the same name, these tend to have either the names of their founders, such as Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen or, they have new names such as Strathclyde University in Glasgow, or the University of the West of England, in Bristol. The University of Wales and that of the (Scottish) Highlands and Islands differ as they have campuses in multiple locations across their geographical regions. I'm also unfamiliar with "town-gown," though its meaning is immediately obvious. Other than at graduation ceremonies, academic gowns are rarely seen on students these days, although there are exceptions, such as the University of St Andrews. Founded in 1411, this is Scotland's oldest university and upholds a number of curious traditions. Though scarlet gowns are not compulsory, most students do use them - as how they wear them denotes where they are in their student careers. While first-year students wear them fully over their shoulders for example, second-year students wear them on the outer edge of their shoulders; third-year students wear them off one shoulder (left shoulder for academic and right shoulder for scientific, subjects). and final year students were them completely off their shoulders! They also have a student family system whereby freshers are 'adopted' by third year 'parents' who monitor and guide them. Then there are events such as the Raisin Day when originally, students got involved in massive flour-and-raising fights - though nowadays they use foam instead, and the May Dip (in the North Sea, at sunrise); while those who pass their final; exams can expect to get soaked by water being poured over them...! Most famous of all, however, is the Pier Walk which occurs each Sunday in term time - after chapel; and can involve many hundreds of appropriately gowned students walking down past St Andrews Castle to the harbour and then along to the end of the stone pier where they climb the ladder and return along the top edge of the pier.
