What he said about youth development is misleading. You can't become a professional until you are 16/17. So in general in most countries people don't get paid any real money at youth level. There's no draft because university sport is not a thing outside America.

No there are not 700 teams in England, it is much, much more. He is refering to the FA cup. Lower league teams (there are 10 tiers in the amature/proffessional game) have to apply to enter and their grounds have to meet certain standards eg must have floodlights. From tier 5, the other leagues are split into regions, and the lower the league, the more local it becomes: so there are more leagues at the same tier! In the 1970's all FA registered teams played in the cup including 'Sunday league' teams. These are below the 10 English leagues and play other teams within a few miles radius. My brother played for Crown United in Maidenhead and competed in 2 rounds of the FA cup 2 years before the final of that competion was to be played! I recommend looking at Wrexham (who are Welsh but play in England) currently in tier 5. They have been bought by 2 Hollywood stars and RV programmes of thier progress are available. It is possible to crash out of high divisions and spiral down the leagues. Checkout Oldham, Bury or my favourite: Clapham Rovers. A team that has gone the otherway for example is Forest Green or Wimbledon.

Hey man! 1:44 - He was talking about the way Iceland supporters celebrate with their national team after their matches. 3:36 - A match lasts 90 minutes (exceptions might occur during World Cup matches or some specific stages at certain tournaments), however, the refs are supposed to add a few minutes to the match when there are some stops during the match, such as injuries or substitutions.

"the game ends when the ref feels like it", is completely wrong the ref will total up the amount of time there was with fouls/injuries/time wasted and add it on to extra time, if the ref could just end it when he wants then there would be so much matchfixing

There was a change in the rules years ago. Before that, after the official time was over, the ref could end the game at any point he liked. Nobody knew if the ref would add time for breaks, and how many. Nowadays, the minutes added will be announced.

there is now a fourth official who actually tallies how much time is needed to add on at the end of the half and shows it on a board near the end of the half. However the referee has full authority to add any time they want if any further stoppages occur. Lately after the 2022 World Cup referees were instructed to add all stoppages, resulting in near 100 minute games and teams winning in the 90th + 7 minute

He was not saying US players are laughed at by Americans and Europeans, he was saying Americans laugh at Football players when they fall over , (regardless of where the player is from), like faking contact or an injury to get a foul but he was saying that people in Europe laugh at this too. Which is not the whole truth In UK, Ireland and Maybe Scandinavia its laughed at. in southern Europe its considered more a part of the game and in South America its considered an art form in some places. Football did not used to be like this, it used to be quite violent but too many people had legs and ankles snapped, so refs started calling more fouls, and Attackers took revenge on the Defenders by exploiting it. Its a side effect of money and Violent defenders This part is directed at defenders who are reckless: So although dont agree with diving, I totally understand where it comes from and I point the finger at Defenders and state that f you cant stop someone without injuring them, and you chose to try and injure them, dont cry when Attackers start using your own lack of talent against you, made your bed

My father used to inspect schools in England. He was inspecting a school in Liverpool and spoke to a young child (about 9 years old). As he usually did he asked the child what they wanted to do they grew up. The child responded that they were going to play football professionally. My father reacted skeptically even though he had played in his school team with someone who had gone on to play for Tottenham and England, skeptically. The teachers at the school told my father that the child already had a contract with a local Premier League club. The name of the child? Wayne Rooney,. He went on to captain the England team.

What adds the spice is that, although you may not be having a successful season, every match is like a cup tie because every point counts. Many clubs have been relegated or saved themselves on the final day of the season. Sometimes it is out of your hands and you need another team to either win or lose their last game to save your team. The top teams do have an advantage in their ability to sign the best players, but most of the teams are really evenly matched. Just this week, as an example, we had the team in 20th and last place (Southampton) defeat the team in 2nd (Manchester City) in the Carabao Cup.

The lack of consequences for bad play is one of those things many Europeans find bothersome in American sports. If you lose all your games that year why are you still here? Yes, I'm aware it's about teams buying a spot and owners wanting to make profits. Going down a league will have no effect on the player unless that is a clause in his contract that states such a thing. Remember, this is Europe. The employee does not suffer because of the company's fault. It's not their responsibility. If a player in a relegation team earned 40k/week in the premier league on a 3 year contract and the first year they get relegated AND there is no relegation wage clause...the player gets his money. It's the team's job to be responsible with the money they offer on player contracts of course. Nothing happens to players/employees here unless they agreed to it in the contract. Many will also have a relegation release clause. This means that a good player that joins a team that might be relegated during the time of his contract sets a price that if offered by another team they HAVE to accept and allow him to negotiate a new contract with a different team. A 20 million player joins a weak team for 3 years but if they get relegated the team has to accept an offer of 10 million. So that player can be confident to leave the team in case that happens for a better financied club. His team gets only 10 million, he gets a new contract. Hopefully for his sake with a pay rise.

Iceland invented the Thunder Clap, kind like the modern Mexican Wave. The match is 2 halves of 45mins, sometimes players get injured and require treatment so the ref adds on time for that treatment and substitutions. My best way to describe football to Americans is, it's a game of anticipation rather than constant scoring. When you understand the game you can see when a good tackle. pass, save etc happens). I watch an American youtuber called impulseSV who loves the show Wrexham (Wrexham was bought by Ryan Reynolds and someone else who made a documentary about their progress) ) and even he described it as a game of anticipation . If i'm not mistaken the owners of Liverpool FC (Fenway Sports Group) or maybe the Glaziers at Man Utd wanted to change the relegation/promotion system in football (which has been there for 100+ years) because they didn't understand it Not every player has a release clause, that usually happens with players who believe they're good enough to play for a bigger club and aren't fully committed to their current club. Honestly i didn't even notice him saying soccer, after all these years my brain is programmed to hear an American calling it soccer. You have your own sport called football (i don't know why it's called that when foot and ball rarely meet) so it would get confusing for you calling 2 different sports football. American sports could benefit if they had a relegation system and a league instead of a (football) cup system. NFL plays 17 games a season and basically have 2 different teams (offence and defence). The English Premier League play 38 League games and then there's the FA Cup, League Cup, (Champions League/Europa League for the top teams). Did you know the average gameplay time for American Football is 13mins? The average gameplay time for football is 65mins

A football match is 90 minutes, split into two 45-minute halves, it goes into extra time due to injuries etc like 3/4 minutes depending on how much time was wasted during the 90 minutes on injuries but this happens first half before half time and then again second half if extra time is needed. If it's a knockout game and they aren't decided after 90 minutes with a clear lead as to who is winning the match like if the score is 0-0 or 1-1 the (plus time added on) then there will be extra time. There will be 30 minutes of extra time which is split into two 15-minute halves. If after the added time of 15 minutes each way then it goes to penalties.

On penalties, its best of 5 penalties, followed by single penalties (sudden death) until all players have taken a shot, not sure if that includes goal keepers, if it remains a draw, then there is a coin toss. On the penalties, only those players on the field at the end of the match are eligible to take a shot, note sometimes there is a substitution in the last minutes of extra time, in order to get you best penalty takers on (available) not sure what happens if one team has had a player sent off during the match.

Those kids don't necessarily get money, but they basically get what they call a scholarship, which means they don't have to pay for any of the training they receive. The kids that get signed to those academies that young are usually the ones that show real promise early on. There are other ways to turn pro tho as well. There have been some examples of players essentially moving up from playing "Sunday league"/ amateur football and just getting picked up by teams higher and higher up the football ladder. It takes a while but Jaime Vardy is one of the best examples. There are also kids that start out playing on their schools football teams or just play on the street with their mates and that then get picked up by clubs when they are 16-18.

On player positions, other than goal keeper, all players have the same rights, you maybe on as a left back, but you can be up in the opposition half and score a goal, your coach may have something to say to you but there are no issues as far as the rules are concerned. Goal keepers are the only players allowed to play the ball with there hands (in a restrict part of the field). Goal keepers are identified as having a different colour jersey (top) to the out field players. There is nothing (other than the anger of the coach) to stop a goal keeper playing anywhere on the field and even scoring.

Last season Liverpool could win quadruple, they were 1 point behind Manchester City in the League so they still could win the league in the last match of the season and they were winning the league 20 minutes before the end, but manchester city made a comback and they won their match. They also played in the final of Champions league but lost, they won the Carabao Cup and also the FA Cup. So they won 2 out of 4 trophies but they were very very close. They were playing for all 4 trophies in the last season until the last matches of every competion. They played all the matches they possibly could. But i think that this is also the reason why they are not playing their best football this season, they are exhausted. Their coach Jurgen Klopp is playing really intensive style based on high pressing and fast running and after the last season you can see that they are out of breath. Players played around 80 matches in the club and a lot of them played matches for their national teams during the season so that can be another 10-20 matches. They have like 2 months of break between the season, but the summer trainings starts like month before the season so its like 1 month without a football. But every two years there are National Cups like World Cup or European Cup, African Cup etc. and they are played during the break so some of the players are just playing football without a break. That is actually crazy.

There are a couple of things the guy who made the video didn't explained well about the Champions League and the Europa League . There are some European countries the team that won the league title doesn't go straight into either tournament so they gotta play on the qualification rounds ( played between July & August ) . Countries like Spain , England , Italy , Germany , France , the top 4 teams that finished the season on the previous year gets automatically qualified into the Group Stage , #5 & #6 gets qualified into the Europa League . There are also other much harder ways to get qualified into each of the mayor European tournaments without finishing on the top 6 on the league ( by winning league tournaments ) . Once the teams who qualify for the Group Stage , 4 teams per bracket ( A - H on the Champions League , A - H on Europa League )( 2 teams from the same country can't be on the same bracket ) . On the Champions League once the group stage is completed , the top 2 move on to the next round , those who finished in #3 gets sent to the Europa League , and the #4 are out . Then on the next round the teams that loses gets sent to the Europa League ( which is the last time for any team to stay on the tournament ) . The winner of each Tournament , plays each other before the regular season begins at the UEFA Super Cup , also the winner of the Champions League is invited into the FIFA Club World Cup ( is normally played in December ) .

Release Clauses: He is not exactly accurate. Transfer Fee is the first negotiation and includes the teams, and many times NOT the player themselves at that point. They come in after that to negotiations, so sometimes Players get sold that dont want to leave. You have all 4 of these negotiated independently *Transfer Fee (amount agreed by the 2 clubs for the transfer of the player, this may or may not trigger a release clause, and a player may or may not have a release clause, most transfers are absent of release clauses) *Player wages (usually works out as about the same as the transfer fee paid to the club over the course of usually 3-6 years,) *Player Signing on Fee (Lump sum at the start of the contract) *Agent Fee's (Lump sum, usually % on the deal) You will usually hear Transfer fee quoted (between Clubs) and Wages to the Player, If a player goes for £100 Million transfer fee, their contract will usually be 4 or 5 years and will be something similar to £100 million over that time so 20-25 £Million a year. Its not exactly or always like this but most of the time, it costs the team the transfer Money and the same amount in wages and other fees. Players are sold to recoup on big transfers, and spending power is an advantage *cough Man City cough PSG cough Newcastle cough cough* Every Player in Spain has a built in release Clause in their contract However I think the rest of Europe (certainly in the UK) sometimes will have it if the player negotiated it, but its not usually set in the contract. However in bidding Wars, players valuations can be inflated and offers that cannot be refused happen (quite often)

the Spanish system is controversial because it has favored Real Madrid and Barcelona, allowing them to poach players at other clubs without so much as a heads-up simply by throwing money at the other club. Atletico Madrid lost Thomas Partey literally at midnight on the transfer deadline when Arsenal paid his release clause and flew him out to London without even telling Atletico.

The game doesn't stop when the ref feels like it. He's added on time lost to injury or the ball going dead for an unnecessarily long period of time such as substitutions. It should still total 90min of gameplay

A game of football consists of 2 45 minute halves for a normal league game. Unlike US sports football has multiple leagues in each country where teams in lower leagues can be promoted if they win the league or demoted if they lose the league. Each team owns it's players contracts and players can be transferred from any team to any other team. My own club is Rangers who play in the Scottish Premier League we sold a player during the last close season to Ajax of Amsterdam who play in the Eredivisie. In cup competitions games which finish on a draw, (tied) will require an additional 30 minutes of play split into two 15 minute halves. If at the end of that extra time the teams are still tied then each team takes a minimum of 5 penalties each if still tied, the penalties become sudden death. It's complicated but not if you grow up with it and it's not impossible for a player to play 60+ games in a season. Personally I loathe the word soccer, it's football or footy. The most exciting games to watch are what are called derby matches, these involve local rivals, in Scotland the two big derbys are Rangers v Celtic and Hearts v Hibs, from England, Liverpool v Everton, Arsenal v Spurs, in Italy AC v Inter.

As far as I understand it, and to clarify, you can get signed into the academy at a really young age. You do get paid but it's basically the least amount you can be paid (partly due to child labour laws and partly because they're essentially training rather than constantly playing). You can turn professional at 16 and then you get a professional wage. It's relatively uncommon for that to happen, but it does occassionaly. A centre forward and a striker is the same position but describes different styles of playing that position. There's also a central attacking midfielder (usually, but not always, called a playmaker or midfield general. They're often the captain). Attacking wing defenders are called wing backs because they're half way between a winger and a defender. And yes, we do get annoyed when you call it soccer.

Unlike American football, Football Teams(soccer) have ONE team NOT two. Attack and defence are the one and same team. Then there are NO ad breaks, which ruin the fluency of the game. Football (not American) Plays for 90 mins. 45mins continuously until half time, where there is a short break and teams swop ends. So the entire game is 90mins unless the referee adds time for injuries etc. There are normally 3 substitutions allowed per game but can be 5 if the game plays extra time. Extra time is allowed when teams are equal in goals scored, 30 minutes is added to the game for extra time spilt into two halves.if both teams are still equal after the full match and added extra time (120mins) then the result will be decided by penalty kicks- a sort of sudden death. Football is the Worlds greatest game as you will realise when you understand the rules more. Good Luck. Oh just one more thing, if you want to watch the greatest footballer of all time, then look up the Messi vids. Won every trophy there is inc. World Cup, made many records and is just fantastic to watch as he takes on 3/4/5 players and still scores. Incredible.

the main American leagues are designed like a bowl rather than a ladder, so the worst teams only end at the bottom of the bowl. There are smaller leagues like the NBA's G League and baseball's lower leagues, but these are smaller teams co-owned or feeding the larger teams and could never compete with them. Teams are generally more equal financially in the major leagues and there are rules like salary cap and trade limits , so if a team starts to dominate it's not because they recruited the best players only, but their own players have stepped up. In football the teams can rise and fall because the leagues are essentially the same in that the top teams earn promotion and fight off the other 17-18 teams, the bottom 2-3 are punished for not doing well. In US sports each league is very different and doesn't cross over to another.

If you get relegated from the Premier League (like my team West Bromwich Albion) you get "parachute" payments for a couple of seasons to ease the wage bill and day to day running of the club. Bear in mind the club has bought "premiership" quality players on top salaries, so this is important to ensure clubs don't go bankrupt (although a number still do). We, like all the teams in the EFL, are trying to get into the top league. To do this you have to finish top or second to gain automatic promotion. The third place is determined by a playoff where the 3rd -6th teams have to compete. The 3rd team will play the 6th team, and the 4th play the 5th. The winners of each game go to the play off final at Wembley. The winner takes the third promotion place.

You guys in England are lucky to have good TV payments for Championship and below. I've never seen 8 figure transfer fees ever in Germany's 2nd. Here in Germany most relegated teams from the Bundesliga are superior to the rest... OK let's add the fact that in the last years many established teams got relegated like Schalke, Bremen, Stuttgart etc who have an historical advantage. But these Clubs calculate with debth in 2nd Bundesliga hoping that they get back immediately, which almost always works out. Hamburg is the big exception, they mess up big time and from season to season they have less money, they are more and more damned to promote. Our 3rd league (lowest professional league) then is a Club Killer. You don't get enough money to survive financially, the gap between league 2 and 3 is too big and almost all Team try to get out of it and make debths. If you stay longer than let's say 5 years there your Team is so stuck that the only way to get out of it then is by Relegation. You have the better System for Lower professional leagues in England 👍

No one ever won a Quad, but, last season, Liverpool came really close to winning the Quad. winning 2 out of 4 and getting to the final games in the 2 they lost, which in of itself had never been done before, almost getting a quad set a record...its VERY hard this goes for all of Europe, there has never been a Quad in Europe, Liverpool were the first team to make it to all 3 Cup finals and have a chance of winning the League on the final Matchday of the League Season. Liverpool won the League Cup and the FA Cup, but were beaten in the Final of the Champions League by Real Madrid, and lost the League by 1 point on the last day of the League season (Manchester City, on the final day Liverpool were 2-0 up and Manchester City, who were playing another team, were 2-0 down, and this meant Liverpool would win the league, but Man City scored 3 goals, so even though Liverpool won 2-0, Man City won 3-2 so they remained 1 point ahead). In England there have been 4 Trebles Liverpool have 2 (1984 League Cup , League Title , Champions League, and 2001 FA cup, League Cup and UEFA Europa League) Manchester United have 1 (1999 FA Cup , League Title, Champions League) Manchester City have 1 (2019 FA Cup, League Cup and League Title) Other league have some Treble winners but I am not sure exactly which ones, but I know Barcelona have won at least one (probably several trebles) and I assume Real Madrid, probably AC Milan, and Bayern Munich as well

While the system of promotion and relegation is woven tightly into the sport's culture, the reality is not quite as romantic as it is made out to be or as many European fans believe it is. Relegation battles are exciting and dramatic. But European leagues, while theoretical meritocracies, are more like feudal states. Winning during the current season gives that club real advantages to winning the following season. The rich get richer. The poor get poorer. In reality, most clubs are simply playing for the right to get their brains beat out by one of a select handful of teams. A newly promoted club, just entering the EPL, can expect a long season filled with a lot of losses, and an excellent chance of being relegated immediately. It's a bucket-of-live-crabs situation.... The second one looks like he's gonna make it, he gets dragged back down. For example, the English Premier League championship has been shared between 4 clubs for 29 of the last 32 years (with two clubs alone winning 19 between them). In Scotland, two clubs have shared the championship roughly evenly for the last 40 years. My club, Celtic, are on the verge of securing their 10 league championship in 11 years, along with their 5th treble during that period. In Spain, three clubs have dominated for decades. In Germany, Bayern München have one ten consecutive years, and are poised to do it again this season. American sports leagues, including MLS, place far more value on parity and competitive balance. If a team goes on an extended run of dominance, it's because they have one key player (Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Derek Jeter, etc), or exceptional coaching/scouting/etc. Even then, accomplishments like three-peats are pretty much as good as it gets. In Europe, a stretch of three consecutive league titles is just a nice little run. Football gets in your blood. Even with criticisms (if you haven't gathered, I've got a couple), it is by far the greatest game on earth. It is the common denominator and bond which transcends nationality, language, and race. It is, quite simply, The Beautiful Game.

When you asked if Europeans were getting mad that he keeps calling it soccer, they will poke fun at you, but in reality, England came up with the term soccer. Back when the sports were first forming, both soccer and rugby were called football. So as not to confuse, the two, Soccer became known as a Association Football. This is because a governing body called the football Association came around. Well, it got annoying to call soccer association football. So people started calling it soccer as a contraction of the words association football. It was like this until the rugby union formed and rugby began being termed rugby. Then soccer became football once again. I believe the term soccer was used in England up until almost in the 60s or 70s. So if they ever make fun of you for calling at soccer, tell them they are the ones that invented the word.

I don’t know if you’ve been watching any football, or if there is a team you’ve been eyeing, but here are some facts for you to possibly learn a bit about: The 2026 World Cup, which will feature senior Men’s teams, will be hosted in North America and have 48 teams competing. The USA, Canada and Mexico will become the first three team hosts, and all three will play. 16 cities in the countries will have matches, and all the US cities will use NFL stadiums because they have large seating capacity. This summer, the 2023 Women’s World Cup will be played in Australia and New Zealand, the first duel hosted event for the women’s senior teams, and have 32 teams. The United States are the current trophy holders, and are hoping to be the very first team, EVER, to win three tournaments in succession. Their biggest obstacle will probably be the England Lionesses, who won their first international trophy last year in the Women’s European Championships. One of the best attacking fullbacks in the world, male or female, plays for England, Lucy Bronze. It was announced recently that the United States will host the Copa America in 2024, which is the South American championship, due to Ecuador needing to cancel their hosting rights. The US, Canada and Mexico will play, along with three other teams from the region and all South American national teams. Argentina, who is the new World Cup champion for 2022, will play, as will their biggest rival, Brazil. They HATE each other…like Michigan-Ohio State or Texas-Oklahoma hate.

The football pyramid in England goes so deep you wouldn't believe it. There are way more than 700 clubs in England. If you were to start a brand new club today and you won every league you played in constantly every season for about 20 seasons your club would be champions of the premier league. Start off amateur progress far enough go semi pro reach the national league turn fully pro reach league 2 enter the football league progress to win the championship then you are in the big time. In theory it can be done but it never has been because money rules football.

The pace is closer to baseball? Baseball and the NFL have around 11 minutes of actual playing time. the rest there is no movement. Soccer has 60 or 70 minutes of movement

Just to add, in the 2000's Inter Milan did a treble with Mourinho as a coach. His negative football basically made some rather attacking minded players play defence which is rather hilarious but it worked.

23:36 nah mate, in europe in general we just make fun of the lack of imagination that is in USA - you take Football and name it Soccer, but take the name of Football, create a game similar to Rugby and name it Football... it's just hilarious :)) Cheers

Welcome to the religion known as Football. On relegation (in basketball terms). At the end of the season, the bottom 3 teams get demoted to G league and the top 3 teams in G league get promoted to NBA. Teams lose money and resources because they get demoted. If you do well the next season, you can still be promoted back into the NBA, but sometimes it takes years.
