Ronnie Barker was such an amazing wordsmith, as you'll see if you continue watching their sketches. How they memorise some of the stuff on a weekly basis was pretty stunning. A great talented pair who richly deserve all the love they've received over the years.

The Two Ronnies was a sketch-show not a sitcom. Ronnie Corbett (Mr Fishbein in this sketch) generally played the outgoing flamboyant characters, while Ronnie Barker (who wrote much of the material under the pseudonym Gerald Whiley to avoid attention) played the more subtle understated characters

The two Ronnie's wasn't a sitcom, it was more a sketch show. I grew up watching them, It's impossible not to like the two Ronnie's. True legends.

Budgerigar, or, Budgie, os a small species of parakeet, but it's not what you would call a parakeet. My observation is you call Parrots, parakeets. Parakeet's are a whole group, not one particular variety. Budgies are tiny, brightly coloured (usually predominately blue, or, green) and good talkers. Size of a Canary but with a long tail.

Hope you get to look at Porridge, I think that was Ronnie Barkers finest hour. (Porridge, slang for doing prison time) Budgie - Small Australian parakeet very popular in the UK as a cage and aviary bird. Was a favourite pastime of the working class 1950s onwards breeding and showing Budgerigars.

Couldn't agree more. Porridge is possibly Britain's best ever sitcom, because it made great comedy out of prison, without any sentimentality or moralising. And much of that was down to Barker's brilliant acting skills.

@@becomemexican - Parakeet is a generic term that covers all small parrot like birds including lovebirds etc. So yeh Budgies are Parakeets the same as Macaws at Parrots. You are not wrong, just that parakeet does not really tell you everything

These two were friends and duo comedian act for decades. Also extremely good actors. The smaller one sometimes would be seen ready to laugh. My parents loved them as did all of us growing up.

Good on you Conner, it's so refreshing to see a young fellow like yourself with genuine interest in these old classic British comedies. I grew up with them in the 60's/70's in Australia and I'd love a dollar for every time they cracked me up laughing. Here's a few more to check out: The Benny Hill Show, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Mr Bean, Allo' Allo', Steptoe and Son, Open all hours & Mind your language, have fun!

It’s a shortening of the word budgerigar (might not be correct spelling). They are small colourful birds which can be taught to speak so they used to be a great favourite with old ladies.

The Two Ronnies were a great comedic duo. Ronnie Barker, the big one, had great ideas and Ronnie Corbett could completely lose himself in very complex routines displaying incredible energy while simultaneously letting the audience know he was going to make them laugh. Together they were hilarious.

The two Ronnies musical sketches are the best

The Two Ronnie was very mainstream tv, Saturday night tv, sketch show. Where as Yes Minister/yes Prime Minister is probably the best British comedy

If you see the name Gerald Wiley under the writing credits thats Ronnie Barkers Pseudonym. He loves word play.

I had the honour of meeting Ronnie Barker about 50 years ago when I was assistant manager at a large West London cinema which was staging an operatic Society‘s production of ‘The King and I’ and his daughter was one of the Siamese children. His visit was unannounced and unpublicised because as he explained he was not there as himself but rather as the parent of someone appearing on the stage. His wife was with him. The committee of the operatic Society was also in attendance and I remember the slightly tipsy treasurer pretended to look under a desk to find Ronnie Corbett. We all cringed. We had a very old visitors book in the office and I was actually able to show him the verified signature in it of John Christie, the mass murderer, who was hanged in the early 1950s.

"Could care less"? Somebody needs to watch the 'Dear America..' episode of David Mitchell's soapbox. Actually, I think you get a kick out of watching all of them, they're only a few minutes each and they're right up your street.

Interesting difference between US and British usage of English. However, we are clearly right - if you could care less, you obviously must care about it. Only if you couldn’t care less has it no interest for you!!

A badgie is a budgerigar, an Austalian bird. Americans mistakenly call them parakeets. Two other great British shows are Red Dwarf and the TV mini series Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s here in the UK the Golden era of British comedy. I suggest another Two Ronnies sketch to look up called fate worse than death

The Budgerigar is one of those animals that couldn't be further from being boring, after all, they are brightly coloured, learn to repeat human speech with surprising facility, make modest demands for feeding and watering, and can enliven the the homeliest home with their cheeps. Interestingly, their common name, Budgerigar, is derived from the Australian aboriginal language spoken predominantly in the area of Captain Cook's expedition when it landed in Australia. It means; 'I don't know what you are saying', which I have often found amusing, as another Australian aboriginal language's words for this same phrase are 'kangaroo'. Did you read this, thinking the words in Simpkin's voice? I know I do.

Budgies or budgerigars are the same parrot-like birds that Americans apparently mistakingly call Parakeets, but which budgies are not really of the same close family. Budgies are small but usually brightly multi-coloured and are very popular as tame caged birds in many countries around the world. If kept as a sigle bird or maybe as a pair from a young age, budgies may even mimic some of the sounds of the human voice or maybe even a pet dog. They would not be loud talkers like cookatoos, but as they will often tend to repeat swearing or obscene phrases, this may be a blessing. Apparently the introduction of native wild stock into the international breeding stock generally enhances the genetic diversity of the species and improves the general constitution of their captive offspring. Australians have a special name for the brief swimwear that is probably better known as Speedos. If you are familar with the general size and shape of budgerigars, and have ever seen the iconic Australian Lifesavers in their standard uniform, then you will probably understand where the term "budgie smugglers" came from.

Hi Connor, The 2 Ronnies is a sketch show no a sitcom, both acted in sitcoms I think they both started in either the Frost Report or That Was The Week That Was (TW3), never sure which was first, both Sketch shows, with a News bias. Given your interest in History and Comedy these maybe worth finding and watching.

The Two Ronnies are genius. Have a look at a British female comedian, Dawn French, as The Vicar of Dibley especially ‘the puddle’. The whole series is hilarious!

It's not a sitcom, it's a sketch show, so there aren't characters for you to get used to. They were a great combination as they were so different, Corbett was a comedian and all round entertainer, while Barker was a writer and actor, he never appeared as himself. They both did sitcoms seperately. Ronnie Corbett did, Sorry, which he played a middle aged librarian dominated by his mother. Barker did lots of them, I clouding two classics, Porridge, which was set in a prison, where he played a career criminal doing his latest stretch inside. Also Open All Hours , where he played a tight fisted shop keeper, with David (Del Boy) Jason as his nephew and assistant.

I think the initial inspiration for the Morecambe and Wise duo and the Two Ronnies acts was the earlier American acting duo of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. These became dated in the US while this style of comedy was taking off in the UK with the roll out of TV' sets. That's why British TV comedy seems better when you compare.

I also don't care where a show comes from. If it's good, it's good. America has produced a lot of great comedians whose comedy has reached across the whole world, as we can see by the number of channels that react to them.

This isn't a sitcom, it's just a sketch. A lot of Canadians enjoy British comedy too. I used to enjoy Golden Girls and when I was very small, Amos and Andy. They took them off for PC reasons. X

My wife and I stumbled on Barker and Corbett in the late 1970's; for over 30 years we couldn't say "fork" without saying "fork 'handle".

Yes we had wonderful comedy shows with brilliant writers and cast. I loved them?

Sketch show. Quite a long-standing popular comedy format. Each 30 minutes episode is nothing more than a series of short, individual scenes often quite random in nature. Sometimes recurring characters (like "Nan" whom you liked before) but we Brits do like a lot of variety. Listing British sketch shows would take an absolute age. The Catherine Tate Show, Smack the Pony, The Two Ronnies (these two gents in this vid), Little and Large, Morcame and Wise, French and Saunders, Not the Nine O' Clock News, Monty Python (it's how they got started)... etc. etc. etc!

These guys and the others you mentioned were on TV during my childhood and the whole family enjoyed and laughed along with them. Sadly that can’t always be said of shows today. They have stood the test of time pretty well because they don’t rely on the outrageous or vulgar to get their laughs. Yes Minister/Prime Minister is my favourite tho’!

It would be remiss not to point out that during this sketch Mr.Corbett, inadvertently, called Mr. Barker's Son: Watkins when it was, clearly stated by Mr. Batker that the Son was called Wilkins. This may seem a small detail to some but I feel it is essential to maintain standards particularly in the comedic sphere...

There is a wealth of British comedies to be explored. There are hilarious Sitcoms or what the US PBS channels call Britcoms. Keeping Up Appearances Last of the Summer Wine Are You Being Served Only Fools and Horses Open All Hours Mr. Bean The Thin Blue Line Red Dwarf Wooster and Jeeves The Vicar of Dibley Father Ted Waiting for God The Goodies Fswlty Towers Benny Hill And the list goes on. Enjoy watching.

I think you are being a bit unfair to USA shows, I use to love Roseanne and Cheers, following on with Frazier. One of the best stand up comedians/actor was Robin Williams RIP. You should do a reaction to Robin Williams on the Parkinson show, one of the best interviewers in the UK of his time.

Quite simply you should watch all the episodes of the 2 Ronnies as well as Porridge (including the movie and the Pilot) also Open all hours

Really enjoying your reactions to UK comedy. You, Ecletic Beard and BXKid7 in particular are actually taking the time to invest in these shows, admit it when you don’t understand something but most importantly, genuinely want to learn things to increase your enjoyment. Even the Two Ronnies and Morecambe & Wise on an off day are far better than any of the shouty, sweary rubbish that passes as comedy today. Please though, be the first one to look thoroughly into One Foot in the Grave. Think you can find full length videos on here. Like most comedies, the first series is a bit iffy, but after that the quality just goes up and up.

Try to take a look at porridge if you can, its Ronnie Barkers best work imo
