"that floral pin is more than just a fashion statement-it's steeped in significance. Once a year in November, British people (royals included) honor fallen troops by wearing a crimson poppy. A century-old tradition, the flower has now come to symbolize hope and gratitude." -town and country magazine

The Poppies are on the lapel to commemorate the War dead around 11th of November each year. Richard is selling books for Christmas gifts, hence the interviews. That's the reason for the overlap. It would be cute if he brought the poppies and handed them out but I think that'd be more of a David Mitchell thing. They're kind of mandatory in the media around Remembrance day.

Despite what the others say, if you work in UK tv in early November, there’s going to be an insistence that you wear a poppy. If you didn’t bring one then the producers will get one and staple it on you. 😂

The flower on the shirts is the poppy. People wear them in the UK in remembrance of people who died in wars. It was first started after ww1. Remembrance day is the 11th of November, and specifically at the 11th hour the guns fell silent to end the war. These days it also remembers everyone who died in all subsequent wars since.

I believe the origin of the poppy was because of a battlefield that was left in tatters (ofc dead bodies, decomposition, rats etc etc) thru nature and people collecting the dead, turned into a nice meadow of these red poppy flowers, and they said there was one flower for each soldier lost, and from that day they were used as a remembrance, a gratitude and respect for our lost soldiers.

Richard Ayoadeis outstandingly funny with dry witted humour. 47 with three children Sweedish mother and Nigerian father. Born in London and grew up in one of the roughest areas of London. Did Cambridge law degree but allways interested in theatre and performing drifted into full time and first big success was the IT Crowd. As other have said the red poppy is for the11th of November to mark the end of WW 1 and represent flowers that grew in no-mans land between the trenches. They were originally made and sold to raise funds for War widows and Orphans and injurned returneees now a standard and expected accessory specially in the media on the 11th.

The flower they are wearing is a paper poppy - it symbolises those who have fought and died for our country - the poppy is used because in WW1, many of the soldiers were buried in poppy fields. Since around 1920, the Royal British Legion (a charity that supports veterans and their families, as well as the families of those killed in action) makes millions, which are sold to the public to raise money for the charity to remember the fallen. Most people in the UK wear one as a mark of respect leading up to and on Remembrance Day (Armistice Day) on November 11th, when the Armistice Treaty was signed that ended WW1. A good video on this (might be worth reacting to) is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fWx-2JKNacishbw.html - This one is for Scotland's Poppy Appeal, but gives a good brief history.

Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. The red remembrance poppies are... red remembrance poppies, seasonally adopted for remembrance day 11th Nov, in remembrance of the Armistice which ended WW1 on the Western Front, as well as the fallen of that war and those since.

They are wearing the poppy pin because it is close to Remembrance Day in the UK when he appears on Grahm Norton on 11th November every year to remember WW1 and one of the things that happen in the UK and Commonwealth nations. The rationale is that after WW1 they noticed many former battlefields were covered in poppies. It is interesting how most of his appearance are always around that time of year

All of the cast where unknown to me when it aired, but I took a chance & watched it. I never regretted that choice, even the opening title screen is funny.

"More Boing" I have to remember this, I can't do the same with my hair sadly, actually hair would be a requirement, so that too rules me out as I shave my head, my chin needs a visit from the razor right now, I think that it just falls through after a certain age 😕 OH! David Walliams (Little Britain) the person you knew but forgot. Have you ever seen Richard Ayoade without makeup? It's a rare thing as he likes to keep the illusion of being black.

Haven't scrolled all comments, but I have seen at least one (with you responding) explaining a little about The Poppy, but just thought I'd add a little more. It's basically part of a more general commemoration like the US 'Veterans Day'. There is the day 11th Nov which can obviously fall on any day, and there's also the following Sunday (Remembrance Sunday). On both days many people, institutions and businesses promote an observance of two minutes silence at 11am, to remember the fallen... it was originally for the fallen of The Great War (as it was known then, now WWI). But now all Commonwealth soldiers in any conflict are honoured. 11 AM, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 was when WWI officially ended. The Poppy symbolises the Flanders Fields on the Western Front, where many soldiers saw them as they fought and died during WWI. A paper and plastic facsimile of a poppy is given for a donation of any kind by the Royal British Legion which supports returning soldiers and the families of those fallen. They are typically worn throughout November, throughout the Commonwealth on the left lapel. The total military deaths (including disease etc) during WWI were possibly 10M. Civilian deaths were very possibly around the same. Many many cities, towns and villages throughout not only the UK, but also the commonwealth have memorials with commemorations listing the fallen. You are not surprised by a plaque in any business in the UK (old enough) to have a memorial to The Fallen. Many communities lost ALL of their men. Lest We Forget. I know it's not particularly funny. But not everything in life's funny!🤣🤔😢 TLDR The Poppy is deadly serious.

“Are those little things like cute things Richard hands out?” Afraid not. It’s something that’s left out of Argentinian and American culture I imagine, unless British ex-pats live there, but in November we celebrate Remembrance Day. To commemorate both the end of the First World War and to remember the millions of men who died fighting, many of whom are ancestors of ours, we wear little poppies (not real poppies, they’re often made of paper with a plastic hook so you can put a pin through it to stick it on your lapel or shirt or jacket or wherever, you can get ones that are metal that are like proper pins that you can pin directly to clothing). The importance of the poppy is due to where the fighting took place. In the Flanders region of Belgium, the trenches of the war and the battlefields took place in fields where poppies grew before the fighting and bombs and explosive shelling turn it into a muddy wasteland. A poem was written entitled “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. It reads: In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. The poem became synonymous with remembering those who died in the war, so as a token of remembrance, throughout the British commonwealth (Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand), we wear these artificial poppies. They cost a tiny price, and that money from poppy sales goes to charitable donations used to give financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the armed forces.

That's a good idea, to write your own story, especially if you have no achievements, instead of waiting for other people to write your story for you. And if there's no achievements, you could write it in such a way where either it looks like achievements, or in a way where people don't realize that there's no achievements. The book, in itself, winds up being one's achievement. In my case, I kind of already wrote my obituary for the same reason, and I might very well have 45 years left to live. Or, 55 years, from the moment I wrote it. A book about a film. "Take it seriously!" 😂THAT was funny. I finally, last week, looked up, on KZread, the music you have at the end of your videos, and I listened to the whole piece. I liked and favorited it because if I ever hear it in the future, elsewhere, it will remind me of you, Mandy. It's kind of cool, too. Curious, Mandy, if you like Rock in general. Cleveland, the city I live in, is the origin of Rock & Roll, and that's why Cleveland has the Rock Hall. Also, yes, it's "edited." You're right with the pronunciation. It sounds funny when said like "edited it."
