Not really - I watched it when it first aired and it was very much of its time. It wasn't satirising the English language in the slightest it was very much a "how would people relate to each other if national stereotypes were emphasised" (including English stereotypes). It wasn't malicious and made fun of everyone equally but we can't pretend it wasn't what it was.

I loved this show when I was a girl, although this is not the first episode, which might have been a better one to start with as an introduction to the characters. I had a crush on the actor Barry Evans who played the teacher, Jeremy Brown. He's teaching English as a foreign language at night school to immigrants of various nationalities and religions. It pokes fun of racial stereotypes. Many of the actors involved were not the nationalities they were playing, which is a touchy subject in itself these days. Take no notice of those who criticise it. I'm part Swedish and I have no problems with the fact that a real Swedish actress joined the cast for a couple of seasons and played on what was considered a typical Swedish blonde stereotype of the 1970s - because it's a bit of *fun.* The haters have no sense of humour.

By the way, if you DON'T get the joke, you are NOT English and must be deported or, as a VERY last resort, SHOT! By the way; It's usually the YANKS (bloody Americans), that we choose to HANG first - those from NEW England are prime targets... Just saying! 🤔 "Is that some of that British humour and banter I hear about???" - Hell, I'm climbing into my BUNKER and hunkering down!

I don't know why people so readily point this out as one of the most rasissist shows of all time or other ridiculous slurs. It's so light and silly and the imitations are generally very warm and kind, the only people that come off negatively are usually the Brits. It's just another easy thing to knock, when usually they've never even watched it, lazy and pathetic.

This was such a great show (which would never be allowed to be made today). But its true British Humour at its finest. As you said, they're so stereotypical it isn't offensive. This was a very popular sitcom on ITV ( There were three TV channels at the time, in the 70s), BBC1 BBC2 and ITV, Independent TV. It was the only commercial channel. It was about an English Language school, most of it was set in the classroom with this set of stereotypes, and their nice English teacher. It ran to 42 episodes between 1977 and 1985, there were imitations of it in 10 other countries including the US, where it was called What A Country!

It was a hilarious British comedy but was very politically incorrect in later years and they couldn't continue because the world changed and it became a "no no". Oh well. Albert wanted to produce another series but it never got off the ground. He died in Sri Lanka. Most of them are passed on now.

Oh dear. Even as the child of a traditional British family with liberal leanings, even at the age of seven I found this prime-time weekend program somewhat awkward to view. While its near-contemporaries, " 'Til Death Us Do Part" and 'Love Thy Neighblur', sought cleverly to expose their main characters, 'Alf Garnett' (played by Warren Mitchell, a Jewish British socialist actor, btw) and 'Eddie Booth' (played by Jack Smethurst) respectively, as racists, 'Mind Your Language' was, to me at least and even at the time, less excusable in exploiting the lazy (and offensive) ethnic tropes of 1970s British 'sit-com'.

Although the characters are interesting and likable, the show has not aged well.

There is an American remake of this show called What a Country! This version shows foreign students working towards their citizenship test. Mind Your Language has been used as a resource to teach English as a Second Language in various countries as it shows the idiosyncrasies and pitfalls of British idioms for those for whom English is not their first language.
