@@WanderingSoleTV I studied these for the forestry on Mount Rainier. I spent one whole season with them trying to set up cameras which they were pretty Savvy. I was trying to tell just as a fact that they're lagomorphs and the only two lagomorphs are rabbits and pika. I got told I was a moron and an idiot that they're rats obviously rodents being that you posted this maybe you could help with that. I knew this 40 something years ago but I think he could probably Google it. You know the whole chain mammalia lagomorph Etc. I grew up around this kind of. Not the paperwork so much I hate that part but I did do Running Records and I had to do paperwork but when it comes down to the zoology I have a hard time paying attention. It's like getting my wildlife rehab license I didn't really go to school like I say I just say that because I got my license I had the ability naturally but I've been surrounded by these guys when I thought there was just one or two and suddenly I was just mob to buy them and they made me very nervous it was like they pop up right next to your hand. And you had to go into some pretty high spots where the Rocks were really broken so you didn't know where they were going to come from. One of those disappearances that just can't be explained and then of course you have the big over-sized marmots that come out for a few weeks to eat marshmallows and cookies and then they go back to bed fat and greasy looking. Now they are rodents as far as I know I wasn't studying them I was just telling people off for feeding them. All the good old days. Too bad we didn't have automatic equipment back then to record things I have no visual record like I said it was 40 something years ago and the forestry who knows what they did with the recordings? I was supposed to be counting them is if you can because the same one that just came up in front of you came up behind you three seconds later we needed miniature paintballs. I'm just joking but you know what I mean

This was a pretty low pitched squeak. Usually they are much higher pitched and the sound the make sounds like "beeee". We hear them all the time when we do 14ers

Finding this video is precisely what I needed at this moment! Pikas are my favorite animal (I was introduced to them in my environmental science class), and seeing this brought me out of a panic attack I was experiencing, so thank you for this video!

There's a reason they immediately take off after making their call.

Evolution-wise, this doesn't seem like a particularly helpful trait. I love how they actually find a high place to "eep" from though, it's so majestic.

@@no1caresanymore If you're going to be a smartass about my post, please cover 100% of it, not just 50% of it. I'd love to hear you explain that Toads are the apex preditor too so chirping is okay for them. For any species, communication is a key factor of surviving.

@@VirtuesOfSin Honestly I wasn't trying to be a smartass. I'm not pretending to be an expert or anything so I was just stating a fact that I knew. My toad knowledge is limited but I don't think they need to find high points to communicate with each other, do they? Of course communication is necessary for all creatures, but birds and things probably think pikas look pretty tasty so it seems like they're taking more of a risk. Again, not an expert, just speculating. Clearly it's not too detrimental to the species since they're doing fine, but ya know, everyone's a critic
