The Lifecycle and Longevtiy of a Pika

Chris Ray, PhD (@pikaresearch), a wildlife biologist and pika researcher at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, talks about the lifecycle and longevity of the American Pika, which is commonly found on most 14ers. In this video she explains pika mating, the multiple gestational cycles female pikas have annually, why co-habitating with marmots is a good idea, what an average year looks like for a pika and how long pikas live in the wild.
Thanks to the Colorado Tourism Office (@Colorado) for funding to help support the development of this alpine animal video series.

One of the things I miss most about not living on the ranch where I grew up is not seeing pikas anymore. They are soooo cute, and the little sound they make is also cute. They sound like a baby's squeeze toy. I also miss the whistle pigs, and the trumpeting of the elk in fall. Also miss the birds we used to call camp robbers. I don't know what the real name of them were, but the were very tame. Also miss seeing swarms of hummingbirds at the feeder tanking up just before dark. I'd better shut up. I'm getting homesick for a place I can't ever go back to.

Good explanation. Different mammals have different survival strategies. Even in the same specie, different variants will have different strategy and some small but important genetic differences. For example the grey squirrel and the red squirrel, both are from the same specie but the grey squirrel can store more fat in its body which allows longer fasting periods in the winter. The same with human races. Subsaharan africans have historically bred a large number of offspring of which only a small percentage survive and have no family nucleus as they practiced polygamy. The fathers do not care for their kids even today this behavior persist even in western countries Africans. Whereas colder climate humans breed less child but devote more care to them. Then came modern times and the misguided idea that all human races evolved to live the same lifestyle and need the same reproduction strategy which is false and lead to racial tensions. Respecting the differences is key to sharing the planet peacefully.

The pika does not hibernate, remaining active throughout the winter. Our video series about marmots explains how they hibernate over the winter, which is different from how people conventionally think of hibernation. Check out those videos.

  • @CO14ersInitiative

Because she is a PhD researcher and national expert of this animal and knows how it's pronounced, at least in the USA. If you don't take that as authoritative, go to dictionary.com and hear how they pronounce the word. The problem is Pokemon and possibly international folks who call it pee-ka. We don't take Pokemon as authoritative and don't use any international pronunciations for the American pika.

These animals are very susceptible to stress, overheating, and exhaustion. Capturing usually results in a quick death. Also, their habitat is so closely linked to their behavior, that I imagine a caged pika would be very sick and stressed.
