Hi Orian, you can lower the pitch by spritzing a little water on the head and you can use a hair dryer to raise the pitch but be careful not to add too much heat too soon because it can only take a few seconds to tune up. If the head becomes tired ( so far this has not happened) the old head and glue must be removed and a replacement head put on with a two part epoxy. Thanks, Ken Lovelett- American Percussion

Sorry for the delayed response. There are many ceramic drums out there the doumbek and UDU drums being some of the most popular. The concern of breaking the drum is a good one, however, if a person accidentally drops their violin or flute, for example, there can be a serious repair bill that follows. The playing technique for a percussion instrument is that it is hit or struck with an object to produce a sound. This concept, unfortunately, carries over into the care of a percussion instrument. accidents are one thin but in my long musical career I've seen many drummers abuse their instruments. The only way I can combat this is to make a beautiful enough instrument visually and sonically that it demands the respect of the performer.

Hi Mark, I created and drum set up or sound sculpture I call "The Bellatope" see my facebook page American Percussion. It would take me 5 hours to set up and was very cumbersome to transport. The Orthogonal lapdrum is exactly the opposite. It's small light weight and produces a pletora of different sounds acoustically as well as electronically. The origin of the lapdrum initially was a flower vase that I modified many times over the years to the state where the drum is now. I do not see any further changes. If you saw me perform live with the drum, where I usethe proper microphones, the sound is very big and the lower end is deceptively big. In this video because of budget restrictions there is no mic other than the video mic. On my American Percussion page I am going to give a short description of the lapdrum's construction. Thanks, Ken
