    One of the best demo videos I've ever seen. It truly explains all the features of the product in the most concise and professional manner. You are an accomplished percussionist, too. This is a great little drum. It is so flexible and well-toned. I'd love to get one some day! Thanks for the post.

    I just visited Ken at his gallery to buy my Lap Drum. The selection of different original creations is staggering. Not only are there a wide selection of Lap Drums but there is an amazing array of other American Percussion creations. Ken is an incredible craftsman and has a great passion for his work. This drum was a bargain given the care and workmanship that goes into it.

    That is too cool. I can't believe how many different sounds you can get out of something so small. When I first saw the drum, I couldn't believe that that was what you used to make the sound clip at the beginning of the vid.

    Hi Orian, you can lower the pitch by spritzing a little water on the head and you can use a hair dryer to raise the pitch but be careful not to add too much heat too soon because it can only take a few seconds to tune up. If the head becomes tired ( so far this has not happened) the old head and glue must be removed and a replacement head put on with a two part epoxy. Thanks, Ken Lovelett- American Percussion

    Clay drums are often completely forgotten in Western music. This is possibly one of your best designs. It offers sound combinations that might actually distinguish this entirely from other established clay drums such as the udu and the two Indian clay drums.

    that is an amazing idea! nice playing and demo. My only personal worry is that it would fall off my lap and break. :( I know it's more aesthetically beautiful with the clay but have you ever considered another hard material ? steel? like tongue drums just curious. Thanks again wonderful work!

  • @americanpercussioninstruments

    @americanpercussioninstruments

    Sorry for the delayed response. There are many ceramic drums out there the doumbek and UDU drums being some of the most popular. The concern of breaking the drum is a good one, however, if a person accidentally drops their violin or flute, for example, there can be a serious repair bill that follows. The playing technique for a percussion instrument is that it is hit or struck with an object to produce a sound.This concept, unfortunately, carries over into the care of a percussion instrument. accidents are one thin but in my long musical career I've seen many drummers abuse their instruments. The only way I can combat this is to make a beautiful enough instrument visually and sonically that it demands the respect of the performer.

    Hi Terrence, I tried making them out of fiberglass and even had a mold made up but they looked and sounded terrible. There ls something special when two earthy materials like clay and skin are brought together that sounds soooooooooooooo gooooooooood ! Lol

    Wow! Ingenious design. Was this your idea?... I love the concept of this lap drum but why so small?... It could be three or four time larger and still sit comfortably in your lap... And give more volume, bass and variation.

  • @americanpercussioninstruments

    @americanpercussioninstruments

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hi Mark, I created and drum set up or sound sculpture I call "The Bellatope" see my facebook page American Percussion. It would take me 5 hours to set up and was very cumbersome to transport. The Orthogonal lapdrum is exactly the opposite. It's small light weight and produces a pletora of different sounds acoustically as well as electronically. The origin of the lapdrum initially was a flower vase that I modified many times over the years to the state where the drum is now. I do not see any further changes. If you saw me perform live with the drum, where I usethe proper microphones, the sound is very big and the lower end is deceptively big. In this video because of budget restrictions there is no mic other than the video mic. On my American Percussion page I am going to give a short description of the lapdrum's construction. Thanks, Ken
