Cruise ships move like airplanes. They're not going to wait around for you to show up. It's your job and responsibility to show up on time.

Exactly, ships and ports abide by serious regulations & guidelines. The ship's Captain isn't in charge of everything. The dock & the port are in control of their land. They have to leave when they need to leave & yet they're still patient & wait for a good while. Our ship left two people in Tortola after they called their names over the loud speakers many, many times. Being in port costs money, other ships are booked for your spot, the ship doesn't own that space and they can't do whatever they want. All of the thousands of people on the ship are waiting, too. A few people don't take precedence over laws, schedules and thousands of other people. If you book an excursion- especially if you're tendered because it takes longer, book with the ship. Your tour guides work with the cruise line and they do have priority over random excursions run by who knows who. Every excursion is not created equal. They said their tour people called.... and? Those tour people don't work with the ship so their calls don't change much of anything. As someone who has been on many cruises, to see their plans included going by another boat to two different islands far from the ship AND they need to be back by 3pm? I wouldn't have done it- it was a bad choice imo. If the ship had to leave @ 3pm everyone is told & everyone knows you must be back before then. At least one hour before the ship is booked to leave. It was a risky decision to book that excursion in the first place unless it's just a little 10 min boat ride to both islands & back which I doubt. There are always pier runners. They run because they know there are major consequences for being late.

It is the ships fault. Perhaps you didn’t hear the part about the guide warning the ship of their tardiness or that fact that the coast guard tried to get them aboard while the cruise was still docked. The captain has the discretion to make a policy exception in the face of such extenuating existential circumstances

If they didnt want to be late , they should have stuck to official tours and areas. not gone all cowboy 7000 miles from home. then act surprised when the cruise line follows the CLEARLY stated policies. Not the cruises , fault. 100% late entitled passengers fault. Does the bus or train wait when your late and in the shower? Should it, just for you only??

Well, to be fair, it's not the passengers' fault; it's the fault* of the shore excursion company. The passengers had no control over the situation. ___________________ * (If it's anyone's fault at all -- it may not be _anyone's_ fault. The tardiness may just have been the result of an unfortunate situation that was beyond anyone's control.)

The cruise ship is on a time span. They cannot accommodate one group of people over the rest of the passengers. Why should they have to delay their voyage for ur private trip.

Why is this a story. Here's news, don't be late for your ship. It will leave.

And I’ll bet they open their big mouths all over social media bad mouthing the cruise line, never once claiming responsibility.

The third-party tour company calling the ship to tell them that their tour customers will be arriving late to the ship is like my taxi driver calling my airline to tell them to hold the plane because I'm running late. Utterly ridiculous!

lol this is cruise ship protocol 101. They tell you explicitly that you have to be back before the departure deadline or you will have to find your own transport to the next port. The fact that these grown children are blaming the cruise line are what is wrong with today’s society. Zero accountability for your own actions.

Exactly! It wasn't the cruise lines' fault! They got a private tour not booked through the cruise company, but they blamed the cruise company who weren't to blame.

Anyone missing a ship that departs on schedule is responsible for their actions. There are more than a thousand other tourists on that ship that deserve to keep their schedule. This incident and the complaints are an incredible example of people demanding special treatment, rather than just accepting responsibility for their actions. No pitty party for these privileged people.

Don’t be late, that ship has sailed. They will not and should not wait for late passengers. This happens all the time. If every cruise ship waited for every late passenger, none of these companies would be able to maintain schedules, causing backups and chaos in ports all over the world because people won’t accept responsibility for their own actions. No sympathy.

Rules being followed too rigidly?!? As a teacher, this confirms behaviors and expectations seen in children.

It is made very clear on a cruise that the ship WILL leave without you if you are late. Being in the hospitality industry means providing a safe comfortable trip with food amenities. It doesn't mean putting the entire rest of the customers on hold to wait for a couple of late people. The customer is not always right. What ridiculous entitled people!

Selfish family. Why even give them the gratification of being on television?

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! She basically said it, she thinks they should have made an exception. EVERYONE thinks they deserve an exception because they are exceptional. I've gone on cruises. You must be there at departure time or every ship will be late cause everyone will have an excuse.

They were on a side tour not booked through the cruise line. They knew when they left the ship what time it was departing. Their fault they missed it.

Yes cause 4000 people should be inconvenienced because 6 of them can't tell time. That woman at the end is ridiculous! Cruises are VERY specific in making every passenger aware what will happen if your late. WHY didn't those 6 people tell the travel guide that it was time to cut the tour short and get them back to the dock on TIME. 🥴

It's their responsibility to get back to the ship on time, was the captain supposed to hold up everyone else because of their poor decision and privileges 😮

If you go on an excursion organized by the cruise, the ship will wait for you. If you take a local tour on your own, which is much cheaper, the ship will not wait if you are late. Those are the rules. I always try to get back before the crew, which is usually an hour before the passengers have to return.

Exactly! You pay a LOT more booking through the cruise line because you're guaranteed to get back on the boat, even if the tour runs late.

Cruise ships don't play games when it comes to departure. They actually tell you to be there by 1500 we are leaving .

Rules matter. I've been on cruises they have schedules. It's not primary school.

Cruise ships have tight schedules that they follow getting into each port and they also do wait a bit after the specific time all passengers are supposed to be back on board. We waited 20mins for a family to come back from a private excursions. So the boat probably waited a bit but not for an hour 🙄 at the end of the day you are told to be back by a certain time. I don’t understand why this is called news to me it’s just a bunch of people complaining they missed the boat and want people to take pity on them

Its up to the passengers to be on time. Period. Always a few out of thousands who have to whine and expect entitlements.

The couple should know better about when ship says be back at a time you d better be back

Hate to seem unsympathetic to their situation, especially since they had left personal items behind on the ship but I don't think you'd find an airline holding your plane till you caught up!

Actually, I've been on a jet airliner that was on the runway, ready for take off, then returned to the gate to pickup, a late, out of breath passenger. This was on a flight from Indy to Chicago.

@rakialogan3372 Well, it did happen. The guy looked like a businessman. He had a briefcase with him, and they seated him in first class. A lot of people made comments to each other about it at the time. They sure as h**l wouldn't have done that for me.

What about the entertainment of the vast majority that made it on time. If they keep waiting for late passengers where will it end; 1 hr, 5 hrs, a day? Don't be late!

Don’t be late for boarding, you being rich doesn’t mean you get to break the rules we all understand. Stop crying to the media.

Not sure why this is an “ordeal”. Pretty sure it’s industry standard with cruise ships to be back on board by a certain time or you get left behind. Doesn’t it outline this in pamphlets you get prior to sailing from home port?

I read that the tour guide promised he could get them back within an hour after they voiced their concerns about getting back on time. What an extreme amount of work because they didn't go back on time or a little early. Everyone is warned. It's not everyone else's fault because this group was late.

Simplest thing in the world to do is say we made a mistake. We’re sorry not rigid rules.

This is what everyone on a cruise should experience. Go join the Navy if you want to take a cruise.

Been there, done that. Here's the thing. The Navy won't wait for you either. If you miss movement, you have more than a transportation problem. You'll end up seeing the old man.

If you book the excursions through the ship. If you are late. It cant leave you.. if you book on your own you are on your own

But WAIT… I’ve seen Black passengers who show up late for cruises get mocked when the ship leaves them….and everyone agrees with the ship leaving. There is a time limit for a reason lady and no they shouldn’t hold the whole ship because you irresponsibly booked an excursion which took too long and went past their time limit. Got a whole ship full of passengers but want them to wait for 4 people. Comical

They give them plenty of time, the ships even stay a bit longer, the tour guides don’t get to tell the ship to wait that fact that they believed that is amazing, next time make it on time

There are KZread channels devoted to showing people late for the cruise departure. Pretty well know that if you miss the deadline the ship is leaving.😢

I worked on a cruise ship for almost 10 years and this happened all the time. What makes them so special to have all these media coverage? Ship will not wait for them, they have an schedule to follow, they will pay an excessive amount if they stay more than the alotted time on port.

If the ship left later they would have to pay an extra 10 20 grand in port fees...And if you give an inch they take a mile.. Also they were so cheap as to take a non covered excursion and expect to have the same guarantees as when taking a ship excursion.. Why do these people think they are entitled to delay the other 2-3k people on the ship. Next time DON'T TAKE A PRIVATE EXCURSION. The cruise lines will tell you that. Fake news. The passengers didn't follow the rules laid out for every passenger. They felt they were above the rules and got left behind as policy dictates.

First world problems...you need to have enough money, health, and time to be able to have fun trips around the world anyways. Maybe be thankful trips are even an option for them! It is all about how you frame expectations in life.

They are warned MANY times that the ship will leave without them if they are late and that they will have to travel to the next port at their own expense. This happens all the time. Why is this even news? It’s sort of like, “Plane leaves without late passengers.”

Was on a cruise decades ago. They made it very clear to us the departure times are firm. As they should be for the benefit of the whole group.

Cruisers taking private tours run a risk! I’m sorry this happened to them but it’s a big warning to other travelers!

Title should have been "6 idiots think massive cruise runs on their schedule". I've been on an NCL cruise and they warn you a lot about the dangers of using private touring companies. These companies pay a lot for their dock space and have a strict schedule they need to follow or they will lose a lot of money.
