'Po' is a counterpart of the japanese 'Des', it's used to finish a sentence with respect. 'Opo' is a respectful way of confirmation. These simple gestures puts the speaker in a humble place.

Actually, po does not really have a direct translation. It also does not mean mr/mrs or please. But it is used in phrases and sentences to signify respect. Usually used to those who are older or even those higher in position (in work and such). It is commonly used to your parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers, bosses, and even random strangers.

And God forbid you forget to put po and opo when replying to an elder. Eyebrows will be raised and the dreaded 'Ano'ng sabi mo?' (What did you say?) will be uttered. And word will spread to all your other aunts and uncles and grandparents. 'Hindi siya nag-po.'

Actually when eating, if somebody regardless of who you are that unexpectedly visits or just passing by we always say "Mangaon ta or Kain Tayo" which directly translates to "Let's eat". If you want to eat you are free to join we don't need anything in exchange.

I am Filipino but we still have traditions that It still hits differently like ligawan (courtship), pamamanhikan (when two family makes agreement when a couple decided to marry), bayanihan (example is when a family transfer to another location and need to have their structured house be carried to another location or a community would cook the food that will be shared in a wedding or gathering and.. Not accepting payment for any of this services) and other more

Here in Japan all the busses and trains (subways too) have seats set aside just for senior citizens, called “silver seats”. We also have seats for handicapped, or for pregnant women or women with small children.

100% fact about Southern people. I did a Summer internship in Baton Rouge and I was taken aback how the people there are compared to other parts of the US. They were inviting, friendly, down to earth, etc. I can never pass by one of them without them greeting me. They're lovely people. Oh and I haven't found a place outside of Louisiana that can make a decent Jambalaya...I can't believe I never got tired of it.

Po is like a term for us to show respect through our speaking. There are some Asian languages that have this kind of feature like Japanese's desu/masu, Korean's yo, Thai's krab/ka, etc.

Po/opo is only for Tagalogs. Visayans do not have it, and I'd be insulting Visayans adding that in their Visayan sentences to make it appear that they are Tagalog.

The word "po" or "apo" to show respect is like Sir/Madam in english. Filipinos usually in showing respect when speaking with elders/strangers address them in the plural form like for example: Sino Sila? instead of Sino ka? (Who are they? instead of Who are you?) and kayo instead of ka and other words to that effect that do not appear bastos or disrespectful to the receiver.

“Po” doesn’t have a direct translation in English coz English doesn’t not have that respectful inflection it is more on formal vs informal. Also it’s NOT Mr/Mrs, we have separate word for that which is ginoo/ginang or mister/misis. “Po” is just simply added to all sentences to make it more respectful like the ending ‘yo’ in korean but in case of ‘po’ it can be added inside the sentence not just at the end. and “Opo” is the respectful way to say yes(or agree) and it’s usually taught at the very young age so that children would speak with respect specially with elderly. e.g: Hello “po”! Ako “po” si Jane Doe. (Hello, I’m Jane Doe)

People need to understand tho that the Philippines and the US are two very different countries in almost all aspects. It’s true in the US that it is not like they don’t want to take care of their parents, but most of the time, it is risky to have parents stay with them at home since people are almost too pre occupied by their jobs there. Housing, bills and taxes aren’t going to pay for themselves. At first I didn’t understand why would somebody put their parents in a nursing home, but as I witnessed how both countries are, I understand both sides. Thank you for reacting to this video! It makes me happy that other people from a different race are trying to understand our culture.

Utang na loob means "Debt of Gratitude"

Utang na loob translates to "a debt of obligation or reciprocity" and most of the that sort of debt accounts for something that's unquantifiable.

We still have some other sign of respect towards our unties and uncles who are siblings, of our parents, and cousins upto a distant degree. The younger ones will show their respect by indicating their close plam right hand while its thumb pointing to the untie /uncle. While saying untie/uncle "vesa mano".

Po and Opo is a term or response / reply to someone who is older than you. We respect elderlies here , our parents and grand parents. Filipinos values our family so much. So we say it to them, like "opo" is a very formal "yes" word you say to someone older than you. When they asked you "have you eaten?" Or in tagalog "Kumain ka na ba?" You say yes, but instead you say "Opo" or No/"Hindi pa po". Youre very respectful if you say po and opo. ❤😊

You know what’s funny? In the very old days when first Filipinos was sent to US to work, there was a big Filipino community. The shrimping and gumbo were believed to have originated from the first Filipino settlers in the south. There’s actually a documentary about that history. Perhaps the hospitality and caring of the southern people may have ties with the first Filipino settlers in the south.

The mano po or kissing of the hand is usually done for elders in the family or even close friends of the elders and not just for grandparents. You are correct many public places have dedicated parking slots for seniors which is usually located nearest the entrance and exit. Even dysfunctional families are expected to take care of their old folks and not out them in shelters. If you do that, expect to get a lot of criticism.

Unfortunately... "Some... " Kids/teens/new generation adults nowadays don't belive in taking care of they're parents anymore, saying it's not their duty to take care of them just because they brought them to this earth. (You'll see these in some fb shorts or tiktok) I agree that there are some parents who are abusing this and asking it themselves to be taken care of by their kids "forcibly" and this is sad ... I hope we don't lose sight of this culture though. So that one day when we get much older, i won't be afraid of being alone. I know my daughter loves us, so i won't have to think about it. About the "mano po" (taking of the hands?) ... YES you're right gurl, it's the same as your kiss to your elders when you see them (show of respect) 😊❤🇵🇭😎👍

Not sure if other Filipinos practiced it but young ones Mano Po the elder and they in return reply "Pagpalain ka anak/ Bless you child" and if the elder passes away the young ones Mano po the elder one last time as well as say "Pagpalain po kayo/Bless you".

The "Mano po" gesture is done, when ever you leave or arrive home or when Parents leave and arrive, is still a practice until now. I think the Mano(hand) po gesture, evolved from the old ways when asking/giving blessings. Bowing your head down while an Elder places his Palm over the top of your head. Other cultures are by Kissing the back of the hand of an Elder or to someone of high Position as a gesture of respect or admiration. Kissing the center of the forehead, between the Eyebrows is called the 3rd Eye kiss, an ancient Egyptian gesture, when giving someone blessing, a thought of compassion , a sense of security and wellbeing to the person.

I dont like mano po since when you have a reunion. And you have 50 uncles,aunties, etc, you usually obliged to take their hand and perform mano po. And if you hide, your mom and dad will call you and tell you to take their hands. lols And that's a lot of hands.

I think respect has something to do with our own upbringing or family culture. I mean, we can teach our kids how to respect older people even if they're not related to them. I guess it's the same with families in the U.S.

I changed my opinion about retirement homes now that I'm older. Sometimes sending the elders to a retirement home is better because the children are usually busy. In retirement homes they have social life and their health is monitored better. However if my parents are still alive, I think I wouldn't send them to a retirement home if they don't have complicated health issues.

The majority of Aussies only put elderly relatives in a Nursing Home if they need specialised care their family can't provide. My Grandma, Mum, Great Aunty and her Daughter whom we call "Aunty" whe or are in the case of the last relative I mentioned incredible for their age. Having held onto most of their marbles. The Aunty I mentioned is in her early 90's and like her Mum she's still safe to drive. Grandma and Mum only made it to their early 80's. Mum was still driving and had a better social life than I do. My Mum's sister on the other hand has Dementia and is in a Nursing Home. She has plenty of visitors though. My Sister and I felt we owed it to Mum to look after her after all the loving care she'd given to all 8 of us as kids. It was our turn to give that back to her and she was deeply appreciative of that. Once t I even stayed up all night in case she needed me, after twisting her knee and needing help to walk. The next morning she was admitted to hospital.

Filipino here. While it is good to respect your elders, but it doesn't have to be an absolute system. As the saying goes, "respect begets respect." Many parents, grandparents and elders are cool and are worthy of respect. But there are those who seem to live in the past and are unwilling to accept and respect the choices of the young. Unfortunately, there are elders who are basically akin to tyrants. Forcing whatever religion, culture and superstition they have to their sons and daughters. I hear it all the time. People getting forced into careers they never wanted to be in. To participate and entertain old and outdated superstitious practices that date back to hundreds or years. They basically want to control and micro manage the choices of the young usually simply for monetary gain. Why do you think there are so many Filipino nurses? is it because we really like the medical field? Or is it because being one allows you to go to foreign countries so you could earn more money. Creative fields like art and music are often dismissed because "there's no money in it." Why should you respect someone who basically shatters your hopes and dreams before you even have the chance to try?

Eng: Can I go? Tag: Pwede umalis? Tag2: Pwede PO umalis? While PO is just a word you insert to show respect this is how you say yes or no with respect. Regular YES is OO, NO is HINDI. With respect: Yes - OPO / No - HINDI PO. 🤗

But if you're a bible believing Christian whether you are of any nationality and race you must adhere to this biblical principle: 1 Timothy 5:8 says, "But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."
