I grew up in a Guyanese American home. This means that I grew up hearing some interesting sayings that may not be understood by the average American. In this episode, I share some of my favorite Creolese sayings.

My favorite sayings growing up in my Guyanese household is. 1. Mouth and mouth have story, hands nuh have nuh business. Pretty much means that there is no need to hit someone when there is an argument, use your words, not your hands. One who brings de bone, carries de bone. Means that the one who always telling you about someone who is slandering your name is the person who partaking in the slandering. I love this video even tho I'm a few years late.

Here's a Guyanese creole saying I told an American complaining about some stevedores sleeping while others worked in a ship's hold. I explained to him that they were underpaid while the owners of the wharf made huge profits. I said, "Teef from teef mek God laugh!" meaning that when you steal from a thief God is amused and laughs! He was amused and said he must remember that saying!

Thanks for that, you actually made a good point about the Creolese spoken by Indo-Guyanese. The beauty of the language is its diversity. However, don't mistake my perspective as me being exclusionary or racist. I didn't grow up in an Indo-Guyanese home so I cannot speak to that experience. So, I dont think it is inappropriate that I, as a non-Indo-Guyanese to pretend to have done so. I can only speak for me. However, I'm always interested in learning more about our nation's culture which is why I asked everyone to share their favorite sayings. Do you have anything you'd like to share?
