My mother is Swiss and my father was Italian. He had worked a couple of years in Germany before meeting her and he could speak German. When I was a kid my father didn't want my mother to speak Swiss German to me, so we always spoke in Italian. Then when I was 18 we moved to German-speaking Switzerland and I was forced to learn a language that was almost unknown to me. Also, my father made me choose French instead of English at school only because we had relatives living in French-speaking Switzerland. I'm glad I learned French, but even then it was clear that English was a more useful language. Eventually, I learned English on my own by watching movies and TV series and reading websites in English. I still resent my father for not raising me bilingual.

Anyway, German is probably one of the most useful languages to know in Europe. Im now living in Switzerland and have to learn German.. its an impossible task for me because I don't actually like it. I wish I just somehow knew it as a child. If parents can, they should ALWAYS teach languages to their children even if they don't think that they will need it... because one never knows and because each language teaches us something else and extra.

I cracked up when Steve said "Alguien me coge en el coche" because in much of Latin America (with the exception of Colombia and maybe some other countries) it has a meaning other than "Someone picks me up in the car." The language I'm studying now is Norwegian. Years ago I read a book by Barry Farber called "How To Learn Any Language" (1991 edition) and in it he mentioned that one should learn Norwegian first because Swedes and Danes have a hard time understanding each other in their native languages but Norwegians can deal equally well with Swedes and Danes in their native language. I had a Norwegian pen-pal for 10 years and while she taught me some of her language, her English was perfect. Now I'm using Assimil (through French; I had a French pen-pal for 10 years also), Duolingo and Netflix. I'd also like to learn Polish and Romanian, but one language at a time. Still, both say "pa" for "bye" whereas Russian uses "пока" instead.

Well you should try to find some Swedish people who speak in one of the more central Swedish dialects to learn speaking it properly, I suggest Stockholm mostly because even if it sounds horrible to me, I do think it's the easiest for foreigners to learn. And practicing speaking with someone is very helpful. I'm from Sweden myself but since I'm not a speaker of Standard Swedish normally, I have a pretty strong regional accent which even other Swedish people find difficult to understand. So finding one of these lighter and clearer accents is good for you.

I'm very impressed by his level in French. He caught many typical expressions that are generally only used by native speakers (like "J'ai envie de te dire", "je dois dire"...). Of course his accent doesn't sound native but that's not the most important thing. I completely agree about what he said in the Spanish part, the most important thing is to be able to have a good passive vocabulary and to be able to make you understand when you speak the language. In my case for example I don't speak Spanish but I understand it very well (thanks to my knowledge in Italian and French) and some additional vocabulary I naturally learnt, at a point I didn't need to read the subtitles. One day I met a Spanish guy who needed an information but the only language he was able to speak was Spanish. I managed to help him with a mix of French and Italian.

Aaaaaaanyway, it was fun listening and it is very impressive how you two switched the languages immediately, very nice! :D
