America's Only SUPERHEAVY, the T28 | Cursed by Design

Over the years this tank has received many names. Originally known as T28 and T95 in more modern times it has become known as the Doom Turtle or Zoom Turtle. In today's episode we take a look at the development of America’s only Super Heavy tank. With the US entering the second world war it was only a matter of time until an invasion of mainland Europe would occur. Today we know this occurred in the form of the Italian and Normandy landings. However in 1943 D-Day had not yet come to pass and uncertainty about the German defenses would bring with it the creation of a slow moving monster.

Hope you guys like the video. Please let me know if you prefer the black and white filters I've used in previous episodes or if you like the colored footage in this one. Be sure to like the video and subscribe if you enjoyed. Edit: apparently the information regarding the T28 in Korea was part of an April fool's joke from the Chieftain. A bit dissapointing considering there was no indication added to the original post other than the date it was posted. I definitely feel like that's something you absolutely MUST have when talking about information like this to prevent people like myself from spreading misinformation. I apologize for including it in the video. I've trimmed out the section of the video so if there's a somewhat abrubt cut it's because I don't want to cause people to be mistaken like I was.

How about like this: Black and white filters for tanks from 1930s to 1950s and vintage coloured filters from 1960s to 1990s? It will, to some degrees, show the type of media era that these tanks are from.

When i was a kid playing battlefield 1942, some expansion pack had the T95 in one of the maps and i became obsessed with the tank and learned that it was on display at Fort Knox, KY. Years later in college, I did some training at Fort Knox and on the last day of training we took a trip to the museum there only to learn that the tank had been moved :(. Fast forward another 4 years, I'm stationed at Fort Benning and theres a well known section of a maintenance yard among the armor students (pictured in the modern day photos in the video) of all the "war trophies" of American wars. One day, back in October 2020, I went out to a tank range to meet a friend and on my way back I glance out the window and BOOM. The T-28 is just sitting there, i had to turn around and spent like 5 minutes with my jaw to the ground. After all these years trying to find it, I found it out of complete randomness.

@@BreadManMike The problem with two gun designs, one casemate, one Turret, is that you'd have to double the crew size. Two commanders, two loaders, two gunners, and a bunch of other crewmembers just to keep the tank running. I'd guess there'd be 8-12 crewmembers. The next problem is the weight. Adding the turret of the T30 would add 40 tons to an already massive vehicle that had a underpowered engine. The four tracks it has would have to be Increased in number just to keep the tank from sinking into the ground. A new engine would have to be designed from scratch just to keep the tank from becoming another Ferdinand and just lighting on fire when it tried to move. Even a new engine wouldn't be able to propel the tank more than about 15 mph on a well built modern reinforced road. Back in 1947 you'd probably only be able to move it at it's original grueling pace of 8 mph, if even that. Then comes the issue of size. Adding a massive turret and another set of tracks makes the tank extremely large. A 15 ft. Wide tank becomes 20 ft. Wide, and the tank which was already fairly tall, becomes even taller, requiring the tank to literally be carried by a Liberty Freighter just to fit. The size makes it a massive target, and with it's speed it would be a nice slow target for enemy jets. The next problem is development and construction time. If the tank with the T30 turret on top design brought up around the time the T28 is brought up irl, it still takes forever to design, an additional part added on being the turret causes the tank to be welded together even later, possibly even in 1946. The tank would be completely useless.

Mount a turret for quad Browning on top of it. It becomes a anti-air turtle with the ability to shred ground and air units and shoot cannons at armored targets. Alternatively cut the rear open so it's a open top tank, you gain movement speeds somewhat due to less weight and can equip mounted machine guns in the rear. Could even be converted into a Super Heavy APC maybe. Landmines shmand-mines.

The Army ordered for all T28's to be cut up for scrap. Some Army engineers snuck that one out on a barge to their nearby base Ft. Bolivar to use for testing their field bridging. The Army probably discovered where it went and shrugged it off since it was being used but left it on the books as being scrapped out. The engineers probably abandoned it after suffering a mechanical breakdown with the Army refusing to repair the beast since it no longer existed.

Fun fact: The correct designation is in first in 1945, it was named “T95” Self Propelled Gun Mortar Carriage with the sole purpose of breaking the German Siegfried Line and invading the Japanese mainland but then shortly after it was too late to see action it was redesignated to ‘T28’ Super Heavy Tank in 1947. The name T28 and T95 have literally nothing to do with the arrangement or number of tracks the vehicle has on like in War Thunder and WoT.

I once owned a book about all of the tracked vehicles used by the US Army. It had a full page about this beast. It used 2 Ford V8 engines and GMC automatic transmissions. Five were made with one burning up after the engines caught fire. They were going to be used in Germany blasting bunkers until the GIs reported that Germany never built any. The Army planned to use them in Japan but they surrendered before being invaded. Ordnance ordered all four to be cut up for scrap at Aberdeen so were taken off the books as destroyed. The one found at Ft. Bolivar was slipped out at night on a barge by Army engineers that still wanted one for testing field bridging and trailers. Nobody cared since it was off the books as being scrapped. It's assumed that it broke down from engine problems since it was found with the engine compartment doors wide open with trees growing between the motors. Ft. Bolivar was a training base for Army field engineers until the mid 50's, when it became government offices and the training areas were allowed to grow back wild. The book said nobody owned up to sneaking the monster out of Aberdeen or knowing of its existence at Ft. Bolivar.

The Army ordered all four surviving T28's to be cut up for scrap at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. One disappeared with the Army having no idea of where it went. Turned out that the Army engineers in training at nearby Ft. Bolivar drove it onto barge to take to their base for testing bridging they had to build across the creeks and muddy roads on the fort's grounds (was a former plantation that went back to the areas natural ground cover and trees). It's assumed that the vehicle broke down and was abandoned where it sat. The engineering school was closed in 1955 with the buildings and barracks converted into federal government offices with the rest of the base allowed to grow wild.
