America's Most Infamous Mountain Lion (P22 Puma Documentary) | Real Wild

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

A mountain lion named P22 has lived in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park for the past decade, and he’s done more for saving the species than any other creature. He is famous for his journey from Liberty Canyon to Griffith Park in LA. He had to cross 2 of the busiest freeways in the country and came within 2 miles of the Hollywood walk of fame. He is known as the cat that changed America. Named P22 as he was the 22nd puma they captured in their studies. He was spotted unexpectedly in 2012 and since that moment the national park service placed a GPS radio collar on him to capture his movement and life.

For those who have not heard, P22 was euthanizes due to health problems. He usually stay in Griffith Park but in recent weeks he have been roaming the nearby neighborhoods killing one dog and wounding another. After her was tranquilized, he was found to be underweight, had arthritis, liver disease, parasites, mange, failing heart and had wounds after being hit by a car. He was in poor shape and it would be more humane to put him down. He will be missed.

More than words can say, more than tears can soothe, P22 has been a symbol, to those of us who love cats, of all “creatures great and small”…. I, personally, would like to see a memorial statue dedicated to this big beautiful cat that had stolen our hearts and souls…

I’ve had to encounters with pumas in my life. Now 71, my first was when I was 14. We lived in Sierra Vista Az and a rancher had a pet female. When he came to the grocery store, he would chain her outside. Whenever my mother read, she went into a trance. I snuck out of the car and cuddled with the puma. She purred when I scratched her behind the ears. My mother finally looked up and began shrieking at the top of her lungs. The puma looked at me with what I thought was sympathy and I got back in the car. It was worth the lecture. When we came home my Dad took me to inside, asked me what it had been like and then explained the difference between “tame” and wild predators and how to behave. Years later I was walking in the Tucson foothills paying a lot of attention to my environment as there was a severe drought and animals were coming down to the swimming pools to drink. I suddenly saw a very large puma about 3 yards from me. I froze and only liked from under my eyebrows. We stayed like that then he went on his way and I continued my walk. Absolutely amazing experiences i remember as if they were yesterday.

Being an avid outdoorsman I have come across pretty much every species of animal that roam the South West, except a mountain lion. The only time I saw one was a dying one lying on the road shortly after it had been hit by a car near the Grand Canyon. It was such a sad sight.

It lifts my heart to see a Puma beat the odds, and saddens me that P22 will never pass his genes on. I lived at Los Filez Blvd and North Wilton Place in the mid 70s, and Griffith Park was a short walk away to a different world. Humans need to understand just how badly we have affected the ecosystems we rely on as a species. For far too long we have treated the world as if we can live independent of other life forms, and only now, we see that we can’t. I hope they got the overpass built, given that it is a small price for the health of the species we share this world with. Giving animals back the range they need to find mates and territories is at least a beginning. Thank you for sharing this with us.🖤🇨🇦

@AttyAmber of course it’s a nice size cat but compare him to the male cougars who regularly reach 220 pounds in their prime and are 9 feet from nose to tail. Some 240+ pound males were caught as well. So 123 pounds is a ginormous size difference. To be honest, the average female cougar is heavier than him in the wild. He definitely has issues but he’s a great pet regardless.

I had a very unique experience with a Mt. Lion in Oregon on Onion Mountain! She first made her self known when I was spending my first night In a Teepee! She came to the outside of my Teepee and was purring Very Loud! I thought I was going to die! But She moved on and gave her very loud Incredible call. When my 14yr old daughter started seeing her in the early Morning laid out on a branch of a tree by the creek. I was talked into crossing the road and testing out a loaft in someone's barn. I really didn't want to! The Lion yelled all night Till sun rise!!! I moved make to the Teepee that next am. It turned out the woman was a very angry woman with her husband's son. She never was upset Again. She just was there every am when My daughter caught her bus! She was Very protective!!! People should not be so quick to kill them. Also, I can't say other lion's Will be the same. 🤗

@11:00 gotta say, you'd think, right? ..yet my son & friend were attacked around 9/1986 in the Silverado Canyon area in the OC, early midday💧💧. There was an attack to a horse & rider the night before, the park knew and yet said all was clear. Long story short, the lion landed on top of my son first, they looked eye to eye, the lion changed his mind & went for another, younger, ripped his scalp, the boy's father chased the lion off, and two weeks later the boy's running around at a soccer game, saying, 'haha I fought a mountain lion & I won!!' My son & of course the younger boy received a sum of $$ from the county for negligence. They knew. The reason the lion attacked was because new homes in the area encroached on their land, & they were starving... Possibly they wandered to LA ultimately? I grew up in Tujunga in the 50's to '62, and all I knew of was coyotes, rabbits rattlesnakes & peacocks. This documentary has caught my interest, well done, will be quiet now & finish watching. 🎥👍

Pumas lived in the americas very, very long before the first humans arrived. They are shy and elusive but you treated them as if the were vicious man eaters. P22 was hit by a car, badly injured and unable to hunt proper game, had no mate, suffered from hunger and mange and when he was desperate enough to try eating dogs, you just killed him instead of taking him into a shelter to provide him with the necessary veterinary care. The richest country on earth, able to spend billions on useless wars acts like the darkest shit hole on earth. Better take care of your domestic problems and finally build at least those wildlife bridges after years and years and years of planning and talking about it. Pumas are intelligent, sentient mammals who are far, far less dangerous to humans than other humans are. Stop your war mongering and start taking care of your own....

To call P22 "America's most infamous mountain lion" is to demonstrate a lack of understanding of the term "infamous". That, or the title of the video is intended as click bait. P22 is very popular, and certainly even famous within the confines of CA. But infamy carries a negative connotation that I don't believe can be rightly applied to this lion. It's important to note that he wasn't a problem, and therefore not "infamous".

Glade to see this one lived fairly long in the wild. Tranquilizing, capturing, huge collars, tissue samples all lead to it becoming more and more familiar with human sent and end up terrorizing residential neighborhoods then shot and killed with depredation permits. Bad for us and them

I'm really hoping that nobody no matter what lay a hand on this beautiful cat,re-home him in an area that's not close to LA,I e Ventura, county,San Marcos pass, just don't harm this beautiful spirit,he's just doing what big kitty's do :hunt, dogs do it,cats do it,and especially people hunt, don't be stupid, leave that Cat alone, people are so unintelligent ,put yourself in P22 place,he's a sentient being, with a lot more spiritually than your average pig eating movie star in Hollywood, grow a brain

Now, there is a new female P-18, who is being monitored. These particular mountain lions have maintained a pure blood line, with few DNA disruptions.Maybe, P-18 is a sister of P-22?

the lower 48 in the US has a Puma population of over 30,000 Southern California is a bad example, there is plenty of space for Pumas in northern California and more space in other states like Washington Idaho Montana Wyoming Utah Arizona New Mexico North Dakota South Dakota and Texas, all these states have robust Puma populations and they are expending their range into the midwest states like Minnessota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas and Kansas, oh and I forgot to mention Colorado and Nevada as well

I am a zookeeper in chicago and I regularly feed the hippos day old sausages so they have a taste of their home. I put strings on the sausages and swing them around the hippos they get so mad at me and scream but it's an obsession sometimes the hippos try and break out of their cages but I keep swinging those hotdogs in wide circles over their heads. Luckily my boss doesn't know I do this or my coworkers
