Florida panther on the brink of extinction makes a comeback

Florida panthers, also known as ghost cats, were on the brink of extinction, with only a few dozen left in the wild. But in 2016, a miracle happened, and now there are almost 200 as the species makes a comeback. Manuel Bojorquez reports.

Such a great story. The patchwork of viable habitats is NECESSARY. We really can co-exist together but need to try and do more of this not just in FL but the US and World. Good story

This is a super important project, and one that hopefully gets repeated elsewhere. Big North American cats need such corridors to roam from area to area. Without such a corridor, their gene pool shrinks and they become plagued with genetic disorders. Birds and other migratory animals can benefit from such corridors, as well.

I spend winters in central florida and run in the same small park 4-5 times a week. I have seen panthers in that park 3 times in the past 3 years. The most recent was during a race in the park. I was running along side another runner at 11 am when a panther🤪 came out of the brush and briefly ran toward us before disappearing into the brush! I was glad the other runner saw it too. The park administration the first two times told me i saw someone’s cat!! So i didn’t bother telling them about the last two sightings. Its like seeing a brea in the wild for the first time and being told it was a shaggy dog. 😜

Protect the wildlife corridor and do not build the highway through it. How about a moratorium on new building and stop the out of control number of peoplemoving here. The infrastructure is not prepared to handle all the people. There are no jobs besides low paying maintenance and hospitality. There aren't enough roads with sidewalks and safe bus kiosks. The water table is running dry. Nestle? There aren't enough medical services. When hurricanes hit new unknowledgeable people have no clue . Evacuations fail because we run outta gas.

Elusive? Years ago a Florida panther was spotted in my hometown in west-central Georgia. I saw one and someone took a picture of one along the riverwalk and submitted it to the local paper. Fortunately, no one was injured by it

Not familiar with Florida wildlife, apparently. This National Geographic special is not the complete story. The decline in population of the Florida Panther has been a on going problem since the early 1980’s. They are still, consistently being murdered by urban sprawl.

The billions of dollars people around the world spend each year on animal statues and animal paintings, and stuffed animals don't lie. Not to mention sculpting them, and drawing them. We miss our cousins mankind lived among for 99% of its history..... the wild animals that for the most part, we removed. Including the extincted ones.
