If you're looking for a new upgrade for your system you have a few options. You could go for the 5800X3D and stick with the AM4 Platform, or you could go all out and spend more money on a new CPU, Memory and Motherboard and upgrading to the latest 7800X3D and the AM5 Platform. But does the extra money actually give you better performance?

@@WarumWiesoWeshalb Hi mate, sorry for the late response, I'm rocking an RTX 4080, playing at 4K allows the CPU load be minimized and having AT LEAST an 8-core CPU of the latest generations is enough. GPU-wise, if your aim is stable 165Hz at 1440p or 120Hz-144Hz at 4K, I'd recommend either the 7900XTX or RTX 4080, also note that both FSR and DLSS are getting a new version soon allowing for more fidelity and performance so you can be good with a more affordable option for a while longer.

Thanks for the review. That is handy information. Not sure if possible, but it would be equally helpful to have a "updates per second" benchmark. For specific games, increasing FPS doesn't improve the quality of the game experience. It's more like, "How much stuff can you have going on at once?". Examples of such games are HOI4, EU4, Stellaris, Factorio, Dwarf Fortress, Civ 5/6, etc... Late game, some of the Paradox games mentioned become slide shows (while FPS is >60) because the CPU has to update the state of so many units on the map.

Sure. The 5800 X 3D is for those, who have good (fast) DDR IV RAM and maybe already an AM4 MOBO. Evenfor those, who have a bit cheaper AM4 board because of X 3D chips don't use that much of power, they only generate a bit more heat because of the 3D V-cache but also an A520/B450/X470/B550 board is good enough for it. Of course a 500 chip board is better supportwise but only from B550. ;) And I think, many people bought a 3000/4000 series chip with B550, or even a 2000 Seies with X570 and they can very well upgrade. Well, in older boards it is a bit more complex to upgrade because they do not support PCI-E 4.0. So if you use PCI-E 3.0 x 16 for the GPU, it is OK but if you use less than x16, then it is not so good.

My old Intel motherboard died recently so I was forced to upgrade, and in the end I went for the 7800X3D, with the logic being that it would be more future-proofed and not require me to do as many incremental upgrades, but the option to upgrade is available because of how new AM5 is means there will still be new CPU's released for a few years if I need to upgrade. Intel was basically a non-option this generation, same dead-end issue that AM4 has, and they suck up so much power and so much heat that I would need to spend more on cooling and energy bills too. I'm willing to swap out a lot of parts, but I consider changing motherboards to be a bit of a hassle, so the desire to avoid that was also a deciding factor.

But to right now then upgrade, RAM, Mobo and CPU is not really worth it for average of 4% more frames. Sure some games could be 15%, but I might not even play those. Then you have games with "frame generation" that eliminates any CPU bottleneck anyway. I feel I am better off "suffering" for another year until 8800X3D comes out and upgrade then for a likely far more substantial increase. Or go for "Arrow Lake".

One important thing to note, in the age of upscalers, is that if you're gaming at 4K and using something like DLSS or FSR 2, you're going to be running at 1440p or 1080p rendering resolutions, and if you're gaming at 1440p or 1080p, you're going to be gaming at even lower resolutions. So you might be more likely to see some of these CPU differences than you might assume. Also, side note, but it's actually kinda bizarre to see CPU performance differences that large at 1440p, and to see anything at 4K is absurd. I don't know if that speaks to the sheer power of the 4090, or to how CPU intensive modern games are.

Thank you so much for making this video, I'm interested in VR with flight and combat sims and I'm in exactly this position and questioning which direction to go in. You highlight that there is very little between these two CPU's at 4k which is what I thought might be the case. My current system which i built in 2019 is X570 Aorus (AM4) with a 3600 CPU, 2070 super and 32GB of DDR4 and I built it for 1440 simming works very well but I really fancy going 4k VR. My dilemma is do I upgrade CPU to 5800X3D and go with a lesser card like a 4070ti maybe which would give me a good, less expensive upgrade to get me into VR or do I build a high end gaming rig from scratch plus a 4090 and I'm leaning toward the former. Maybe up the RAM to 64 Gig as well. PCVR isn't quite there yet so this is probably my best option currently. My inner demon tho is thinking that throwing more money as a compromise at my existing system is money I could put toward a high end build thus putting that inevitable build on hold for longer. Anyway, very informative video and thanks again.

There is absolutely no reason to get more than 32gb ram for gaming, not much of a reason in getting more than 16gb tbh. In some games you get better 1% or 0.1% lows with 32gb memory compared to 16gb with 0 improvement when going above. High resolution VR gaming is massively bottlenecked by gpu not cpu, so no point in buying 7800X3D. Honestly you will get excellent performance if you just buy the 5600 and 4070 ti. 5800x3d is overkill on 4k resolution with 4070 ti imo.

In my opinion you made one error. You did not include the cost of AM5 motherboard and DDR5 price in the final calculation. Because no one buys 5800X3D unless someone already have AM4 platform from previous build. So the only cost per frame is the new CPU. While for AM5, you must pay for everything, not CPU only. And, what is also important, I do not think many people will use X570 - so the latest motherboard - with 5800X3. I believe most people upgrade old systems. I myself upgraded from B350 + Ryzen 1600 to 5800X3D on my old B350 motherboard. For such people, 7800X3D is totally irrelevant, as the saving from using 1st gen motherboard with latest & fastest AM4 gaming CPU are even higher. So in summmary, you can have like 80-150% better gaming performance on AM4 with only switching CPUs, while you would need spend 2.5-3x that amount on AM5 for additional 15-20% more performance. 7800X3D makes sense only if you buy new platform, if you already have AM4 then AM5 is totally irrelevant and I think most people with 5800X3D will simply wait for AM5 successor and then switch whole platforms.

@@pengu6335 you are correct. It disables one of the ccds when gaming. The 7800x3d is usually faster if you go watch a credible KZreadr who does fresh installs before each run as there's a bug where the 79xx3d chips bios will disable half the cores on the 7800x3d too. Maybe the x3D CPU's are showing us Games that are not as perf tune, by far outperforming normal cpu's on those games.. I get the feeling that it is if a game is not optimised and doing unnecessary hash sort or something, then having large VCache would help.

Good review and especially your final thoughts. For me I dropped in a 5800x3d quite some time ago when I picked up a 4090 just after launch. I plan to avoid the teething problems with the 7000 series. Also if you draw a line down the graphs where your Monitor refresh rate is then in reality some of the difference vanishes. Though I am personally looking at the 4k figures and even though my monitor (TV) is 120Hz games like Cyberpunk & Hogwarts don't max that out at Ultra+RT+FG with my 5800x3d, so I will certainly move up come the next CPU generation.

Superb comparison. Glad you pointed out the real world issue regarding testing high end CPUs with high end GPUs at 1080p. That may be theoretically a better benchmarking test of the CPU, but it's unrealistic. On the CPU upgrade path, I'm still undecided. I'm moving up from AM3+ and an fx CPU, so for me it's whole new system territory. But AM5 has been problematic and even with recent price adjustments, it's still expensive and hasn't even tracked the price adjustments for end of line AM4. I keep my systems in use for a long time, so arguably the cost over 8 or more years isn't a deal breaker. The reliability may be. AMD and Intel are now selling what amount to overclocked chips, so they come with a propensity for failure that would have been considered unacceptable and probably still should be.

I bought an open box 5800X3D for $263 to replace my 5900X. Sold the cpu/board and ram and ended up spending less out of pocket. Then I found a brand new sealed 7800X3D for $340 locally. Then a month later found another new 7800X3D for $260. And then a B650e-e Asus ROG Strix / 7600x for $240. So both Media PC's have 7600x and my PC and my Son's now has 7800X3D. I just can't pass up selling off old hardware when the price is right.

I bought an X570 board in 2020. I bought 32 gigabytes of 3600 mhz DDR-4. I bought a 3700X and an R580. I upgraded the R-580 to an RX 6700 a while ago. Now it's time to just drop a $300 5800X3D in the socket and keep going for another 3-5 years. If I run the 5800X3D as long as I run the 3700X it'll be 2028 before I buy a motherboard. I could even upgrade my video card quite a bit before this chip bottlenecks. I've been waiting to find one for less than $300. I paid $309. I'll receive it tomorrow. I hope a Peerless Assassin 120 will keep it cool because that's what I ordered to go with it. If you have a good AM4 board and especially an X570 this is a chance to stay relevant for a few more years without starting total over. I'll build eventually but my board and ram are only 4 years old. I love that I can pull a major upgrade without changing everything, not even a windows install involved. I've updated the bios but before I install the new chip I'll have to go turn off all boosts and overclocks because this chip isn't going to like it. I'm like a little kid on Christmas Eve here. I can't wait to play.

Since cost to performance is a big deal, would had been nice to see a entry level 7600 vs the 5800x3d etc. I would not recommend people to spend 350$ on a cpu when they could get a faster platform for a few bucks more. After all People with aging am4 boards, like my self, with a x370 that is about 6-7 years old , eventually the board could die and then stuck with having to buy another am4 board. I made the mistake for buying a 5900x and putting it in a old board now, I get massive coil whine at idle because the board is used to a r7 1700.. I wish I went am5..

Try different PSU for coil whine issues. 7700 is about equal to 5800X3D. 7700X slightly faster, but depends on certain games for the extra cache. 7600 would be fine for "most". If you are basically buying new parts, it makes sense to go AM5. Especially if you need new motherboard. Hardware Unboxed just did a huge roundup. Gigabyte B650 Elite AX I paid same as my X570.
