This song has got such a great basspart! It’s got a really nice maingroove in the Intro and Verse, and there are wonderful melodic licks! Joe Puerta does his job well !
The ‘secret’ of playing the maingroove is in playing the first note (Bb = Bflat) not entirely as a quarter note, but just before the second count you can take a rest (breath). The eight note (Bb = Bflat) on the third count must be played short (staccato) to get the right feel. On the fourth count it’s tempting to play a percussive note before playing the F note. But I think it’s more ‘clean’ to not play anything at all on the sixteenth count of the fourth beat. I don’t promiss that I don’t hit a percussive note anywhere in the song, but it’s a challenge to not play that percussive note and keep the groove ‘clean’.
There are also some nice ghost notes combined with slides. Listen for instance at bar 31.
And my favorite licks are in bar 59 and 74. But above all: listen to the lick in bar 68-69. It’s such a wonderful melodic lick!!
I’ve also got a Bass & Drums Only video of this song. If you like to listen to this video on my channel please go to: • Ambrosia Biggest part ...
I play this song on a Fender Jazz Bass with roundwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression and a preamp. You can play this song at concert ptich (A4 = 440 Hz).
Bass: Joe Puerta

Another brilliant video from basscoverPete. His tabs are always perfect and the shots of the fretting hand are super helpful for learning a song’s fingering and playing technique. The mainly-bass companion video is a solid complement to this one. 2 more BCP videos I will be watching dozens of times. As a lifelong fan of this song, this video sent me to the stratosphere. BasscoverPete’s channel is by far my favorite bass tab source on YT. Another set of tabs I will be ordering directly.

Ambrosia, one of the best bands of the 70's, their contributions to the our world of music stands up to the test of time. To this day their songs cross the bridge from pop to R&B in style. When you factor in the vocal harmonies and the slick production, theirs is a vibe that's one of a kind. Excellent job Pete, now I can dial in these tasty bass riffs that make this tune stand out. Like everyone says, your professional presentations are spot on, the camera work focusing on the fret board, the solid chord charts and great tabs. Thank you for alll you do ! You have an awesome youtube channel.

Also, your bass tone is worth mentioning, sounds like a compressor setting that is dry and crisp with a little crunch for emphasis. Very tight tone !

You’re right! I use a bit compression and a pre-amp to get that little bit of crunch. Thanks for sharing and noticing this 🎶🎵👍😀
