Back in the 1980s I was working on the 29 Palms Marine Base. At that time Buster still owned the place, and Roys Cafe was still operating as a dinner and gas station. The rest of the crew and I stayed at the motel which while not in full operation was still available. I have to say, I still think of it like that.

Been there in 1990. We ran out of gas as well and arrived 5 minutes after the gasstation closed, so had to spend the night there in our RV, until the station opened again. Filled the RV up in the morning, and had breakfast there. We weren't even aware that Amboy existed but were very grateful it did. 😅Great experience. 😁

I was with friends on a road trip from San Diego to Las Vegas early 90’s and my friend (like an idiot) took the car off roading and drove over some cactus which punctured the tires a half mile from Amboy. We made it there, but was stuck… good ole Buster who ran the place before he died helped us out.

They drive to the nearby highway Café and they find a bus with seven passengers waiting for the reopening of a snowed in bridge. However the driver says that he had only six passengers when he parked the bus. While interrogating the travelers, weird things happen in the diner, with the lights switching on and off and the turntable turning on and off.

It’s kinda more popular now but I remember going by in the late 90s as a kid on my way to the east coast with family and it literally gave me the shivers....it was just dead....like the twilight zone....now it’s more lively. Back then it was told to not do that at night. If you leave LA early morning you’ll hit Las Vegas that route fine during the day.

Nice video thank you. Back in the 1970s was driving through Amboy as we normally did this going to the Colorado river. Well, the friend of mine I was driving with stopped to make a phone call. We went into the phone booth and there's no dial on the phone. yes, that was the time they still had dials on phone. You looked up to the right and there was a box with a crank like 1930s and you crank that and the operator came on the phone. The really hysterical part is that my friend was trying to make a call with a credit card. You can imagine how that went.

Amboy was featured prominently in a popular early 1990’s Vampire Book series among many other things like multiple horror and biker movies s over the years…

You forgot to talk about the dirt runway behind the gas station there planes land and they fill up their tanks at the pumps sometimes. They will drive their airplanes around to the front of the motel see some frightened motorist as these small planes maneuver around cars. I have seen some videos of airplanes taking off and landing right on Route 66 also instead of using the runway.

Before you start screaming "Highway Robbery!" about paying $5.50/gallon, gas is the same price in parts of L.A., and maybe $1/gal less everywhere else in CA.
